Patty Griffin Releases Crown of Roses: A Bold, Intimate Reflection on Womanhood, Loss, and Letting Go

Two-time Grammy winner Patty Griffin returns with Crown of Roses, her most personal and poignant album to date. Written during the stillness of the pandemic, the album explores themes of womanhood, grief, nature, and creative renewal, beginning with the stirring opener “Back at the Start,” a song about breaking free from long-held patterns.

Griffin, whose voice was reshaped by cancer treatment, embraces a softer, stripped-down vocal style throughout the record, supported by longtime collaborators Craig Ross and David Pulkingham. The result is a moving body of work that shifts focus from male-centered narratives to a celebration of female strength — including her evolving relationship with her late mother, whose photo graces the album cover.

Crown of Roses blends folk, gospel blues, and Americana into eight evocative tracks that confront change with grace and quiet power. “There’s a lot of work to do,” says Griffin, “and I’m glad to be a woman.”

Tracklist:
1. Back at the Start
2. Born in a Cage
3. The End
4. Long Time
5. All the Way Home
6. Way up to the Sky
7. I Know a Way
8. A Word
