Queen Esther Reclaims Gettysburg on Blackbirding

Blackbirding is an emotionally charged exploration of Gettysburg and the Civil War, examining how a single historic moment hardened into an era whose consequences especially for Black Americans have never been fully reckoned with. Through this work, history is not observed from a distance; it is felt, inhabited, and confronted.

Queen Esther’s uncompromising artistic vision hits with the force of buckshot. Her voice carries the weight of destruction and grief, placing the listener inside the chaos and pain of the 19th century while exposing how the sins of the past remain unhealed. Backed by a band that filters modern music through the lens of the distant past, she evokes the 1800s without ever sounding antiquated bridging centuries with startling immediacy.

There is no sound quite like Queen Esther’s. She channels darkness and historical trauma in a way that feels deeply personal yet universally unsettling, as if drawing from a source few artists have dared to access. This is not merely a historical reflection it is a kind of time travel, pulling listeners into a disorienting circle of inherited pain. On stage, the work feels destined for something larger: as compelling in a rock theater as it would be on Broadway.

To create Blackbirding, Queen Esther roamed Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg battlefield, reclaiming the land through a Black country-soul lens. The album dismantles long-held myths surrounding what many historians consider the bloodiest and most consequential battle of the Civil Warand confronts why its core conflict, slavery, has never truly ended.
