​From soul and jazz to blues, rock, and fusion, few artists navigate musical boundaries with the authority and finesse of Robben Ford. With his new single and video, “Perfect Illusion,” Ford delivers a brass-infused soul ballad that feels both luminous and timeless — a masterclass in feel, phrasing, and restraint.

“Perfect Illusion” is the second single from his forthcoming album, Two Shades Of Blue, set for release on 27 March via Provogue/Artone. The track showcases Ford’s expressive guitar work and nuanced vocals, wrapped in rich horn arrangements and deep groove.

“That was written back in 1999 during a period of writing with Michael McDonald,” Ford recalls. “I went out to get some air and on the gravel driveway, I saw what looked like a jewel. I looked closer and it was a drop of water reflecting the light. I thought, ‘Hah — perfect illusion.’”

Recorded at Eastcote Studios with engineer George Murphy, the sessions captured an undeniable chemistry. Backed by an elite ensemble — drummer Ianto Thomas (Mark Knopfler), keyboardist Jonny Henderson (Otis Grand), bassist Robin Mullarkey (Paloma Faith), and a stellar brass section featuring Paul Booth (saxophone), Ryan Quigley (trumpet), and Trevor Mires (trombone) — Ford brings warmth and depth to every note.

“Great cats,” Ford says. “London has been incredible for finding musicians. This place is loaded — even better for me than Nashville or LA.”
