Sophie Gault Blurs Honky-Tonk and Americana on Unhinged

Somewhere beyond the city limits, where farmland stretches out and gravel lots collect rainwater, sits the rural equivalent of a nightclub a corrugated tin building nearly indistinguishable from the welding shop next door. On weekends, it comes alive with honky-tonk rock made for drinking, flirting, fighting, and dancing. With the release of her new album Unhinged, Nashville-based artist Sophie Gault provides the perfect soundtrack for a Friday night in that very room.

Unhinged opens with a lo-fi, electrified take on Buck Owens’ classic “Love’s Gonna Live Here,” showcasing Gault’s searing guitar work and setting the tone with unbridled optimism. The momentum continues with a duet alongside Mando Saenz on “Pocket Change,” before the cracks begin to show on “Merlot Dodge Dart,” a swampy acoustic blues that hints at heartbreak and parking-lot retribution. “Chestnut Street” leans into a funkier groove, driven by subtle riffs and Gault’s unmistakable defiance as she sings, “why don’t you tell me what you think of me.”

The title track Unhinged brings a singer-songwriter sensibility to the forefront without losing the band’s edge. From there, “(I Thought the) Whiskey Would Help” featuring songwriter Adam Kurtz on harmony vocals and baritone guitar leans fully into the album’s hard-earned honesty. The night winds down with “Last Call Rock & Roll,” which builds from a tender acoustic ballad into a full-throttle honky-tonk anthem. Closing the record is Gurf Morlix’s “Is There Anyone Out There,” with Morlix himself lending vocals to an introspective final moment perfect for the quiet aftermath of a loud, emotionally unfulfilling night.

A fixture in the East Nashville music scene, Sophie Gault has become a go-to guitarist for songwriters while also standing confidently on her own. Whether performing solo with an acoustic guitar or fronting a powerhouse band, she brings a no-holds-barred intensity to everything she does. That authenticity rings loud and clear on Unhinged a record that feels lived in, loud, and unapologetically real.
