Steve Louw Returns With Cinematic New Album Traces of the Flood

South African guitarist and songwriter Steve Louw has unveiled his brand-new studio album Traces of the Flood, out now via The Orchard and BFD.
Produced by renowned studio heavyweight Kevin Shirley (celebrated for his work with Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart and Joanne Shaw Taylor) the album arrives alongside the release of its cinematic title track and official music video.

Blending blues rock, Americana and roots storytelling, Traces of the Flood expands on Louw’s signature sound with a richer, more atmospheric edge. The title track unfolds like a widescreen road movie, set against the stark beauty of South Africa’s Karoo region.

“In this panoramic tale, set in the barren South African Karoo landscape, we are on an exploration,” Louw says. “Travelling from the sea to the source of an African river.”
The song follows a restless journey through isolation, danger and self-discovery, painted with vivid imagery of storms, wildfires and endless open plains.

“Traces of the Flood is a song where you have to keep moving,” Louw explains. “The law is on your back. Storms are brewing. Fires are raging.”
Driven by expansive guitars and cinematic textures, the track highlights the seasoned songwriting and emotional depth that have defined Louw’s decades-long career.

Louw first emerged from the South African rock scene in the late 1970s with All Night Radio before forming Big Sky, whose 1990 album Waiting for the Dawn became closely tied to the country’s shifting political climate during the final years of apartheid. Over the years, he has built a respected catalogue rooted in rock, blues and Americana, while collaborating with acclaimed artists including Brian May, Dave Stewart and Joe Bonamassa.

Recent solo releases such as Headlight Dreams, Thunder and Rain and Between Time introduced Louw’s music to a broader international audience, with Traces of the Flood continuing an impressive late-career creative resurgence.

Traces of the Flood is available now on CD, vinyl and digital platforms.
