Stix Hooper announces New Album Cookin’ Up The Groove and shares the lead single “Standing Tall” Release date: may 8, 2026 Stix Hooper — legendary drummer, co-founder of The Crusaders, and pioneer of the jazz-funk sound — announces his new studio album Cookin’ Up The Groove, arriving May 8. Alongside the announcement, he shares the lead single “Standing Tall,” a groove-rich track driven by buoyant brass and anchored by Hooper’s signature precision and timeless pocket. The album marks Hooper’s eleventh solo release and eighth on his own label. Described as “a focused representation of my musical roots,” the project also pays tribute to his longtime collaborator and Crusaders co-founder Joe Sample. A stellar lineup of musicians joins Hooper, including Del Atkins, Joey DeFrancesco, Jimmy “Z” Zavala, Bill Churchville, Todd Cochran, and Scott Mayo. A nine-time GRAMMY nominee, Hooper is widely recognized as one of the most influential drummers of all time. His work with The Crusaders — spanning over three decades — helped define jazz-funk and has been sampled more than 500 times by artists such as 2Pac, J Dilla, and Beastie Boys. His career includes collaborations with Quincy Jones, B.B. King, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, and Marvin Gaye, among many others.
