The Bluest Sky Unveil New Album BIRDLAND, Expanding Their New England Americana Sound

Release Date: June 12 2026

New England-based alt-country/Americana outfit The Bluest Sky continue their evolution with the release of their latest full-length album, BIRDLAND—a ten-song collection that showcases the band’s most eclectic and fully realized work to date.

The Bluest Sky is built around the songwriting of Chuck Melchin, longtime frontman of cult favorite Bean Pickers Union. After more than fifteen years leading that beloved collective through clubs and listening rooms across the region, Melchin closed that chapter to begin anew, forming The Bluest Sky with a refreshed creative vision.

Across their self-titled debut, the follow-up Raindancer, and their third record Homegrown, the band has carved out a distinct voice within the Americana landscape. Drawing on the electric, mid-’90s alt-country spirit of bands like The Jayhawks, Son Volt, and Bottle Rockets, their sound blends hook-driven songwriting, chiming guitars, and rich Hammond organ textures—music that feels tailor-made for late-night drives down New England back roads. Homegrown added a rawer edge, channeling a loose, Exile on Main Street-inspired swagger with open tunings and a touch of grit.

Critics have praised The Bluest Sky for pairing muscular, guitar-forward arrangements with melodic, emotionally resonant storytelling, helping push New England’s alt-country scene into fresh territory.

A rotating cast of top-tier regional musicians brings Melchin’s songs to life both on stage and in the studio. Past collaborators include guitarists Jabe Beyer, Andy Santospago, Mike Giordano, and Gary Goodlow; keyboardists James Rohr, Jen Gunderman, and Duncan Watt; drummers Dave Westner, Rick Cranford, and Paul Gallo; and bassist Chuck Vath. The result is a live show that feels both finely crafted and gloriously unpolished—rooted in New England but reaching toward a wider horizon.

With BIRDLAND, The Bluest Sky expand their sonic palette even further. The album moves seamlessly between full-band rockers and stripped-down moments of intimacy. Tracks like “Magpie” deliver high-energy performances driven by howling B3 organ and searing Telecaster guitars, while “Isabella” leans into a darker mood with tremolo-soaked baritone textures. On “White Belly Bird,” Melchin reunites with longtime collaborator Jess Fox for a stark, haunting acoustic duet, featuring Fox on an octave violin she built herself.

Production on BIRDLAND was split between Melchin—who recorded half the album at his studio in Exeter, New Hampshire—and Jabe Beyer, who helmed the remaining tracks at his Nashville studio, resulting in a record that balances raw immediacy with expansive sonic depth.

With BIRDLAND, The Bluest Sky continue to push the boundaries of Americana, delivering a record that is as grounded as it is adventurous—true to their roots, yet always reaching for something beyond.
