The Boneshakers Return with Explosive New Album ‘Live To Be This’ Drops New Era of Blues, Soul & Rock Energy on Gulf Coast Records.

Release date: July 18, 2025

Special Guests Include Bobby Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, Coco Montoya, Don Was, Jimmy Carpenter, John ‘Papa’ Gros, and Ron Holloway

The legendary Boneshakers are back and louder than ever with the release of their 11th studio album, Live To Be This—a searing blend of blues, soul, and rock that marks the group’s most electrifying release to date. Fueled by the commanding vocals of Jenny Langer and the masterful guitar work of Randy Jacobs (Was [Not Was]), the album captures the raw, gritty heart of American roots music with a bold, modern edge.
Now signed to Gulf Coast Records, the powerhouse duo is thrilled to join the label’s esteemed roster.

“This album is a love letter to the music that shaped us—gritty, soulful, and alive,” says frontwoman Jenny Langer. “In a world of digital perfection, Live To Be This is all about real musicians playing with real feeling. And we’re honored to have some of our favorite artists guest on this record.”
Guitarist Randy Jacobs adds, “Little did I know Jenny and I would find ourselves in such great company with Mike Zito’s Gulf Coast Records. It’s just pure, positive energy—people living for the music. A beautiful new home for the Boneshakers.”

Following the success of their previous album One Foot In The Groove—which topped the UK Blues Radio Chart and dominated U.S. Soul Blues Radio--Live To Be This builds on that momentum with even more soul, swagger, and sonic firepower. Jenny Langer, who joined the group as lead vocalist in 2020, brings her award-winning pipes (an International Blues Challenge winner) front and center across every track.

Release Dates:
  • Lead Single: “I’ll Kick A Brick (For My Man)” – April 25, 2025
  • Second Single: “Salty” (feat. three-time Grammy winner Bobby Rush) – June 6, 2025

Produced by longtime collaborator John Wooler—the visionary behind the band's ‘90s breakout album Book of Spells on Virgin Records--Live To Be This blends original compositions by Jacobs and Langer with powerful reimaginings of tracks by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Betty Davis, and Ike & Tina Turner.
The album also features a star-studded list of guest musicians, including:
  • Blues harp legend Charlie Musselwhite
  • Grammy-winning producer and bassist Don Was
  • Renowned guitarist Coco Montoya
  • Grammy-winning saxophonist Jimmy Carpenter
  • Keyboardist John “Papa” Gros
  • Tenor sax icon Ron Holloway

Live To Be This is more than a return—it’s a statement. It’s a celebration of The Boneshakers’ deep legacy and an undeniable declaration of their fearless future. Blending Detroit soul, Memphis grit, and the timeless groove of Muscle Shoals, the album solidifies their place among the greats of modern roots music.
