“With each new release, fans discover a new side of him they may have never seen before,” says Jody White, son of swamp funk and country music icon Tony Joe White. Since his father’s passing in 2018, Jody has carried the torch, preserving and expanding Tony Joe’s legacy for lifelong devotees and brand-new listeners alike. Now, with the upcoming release of The Real Thang, Jody believes fans are in for something truly special.
“This should resonate with a lot of people,” he explains. “He didn’t have a record deal at the time, but he was writing all of these incredible songs. The Real Thang really represents a forgotten era in his career.” Originally released in 1980, The Real Thang captured Tony Joe White at a pivotal moment—his swampy, soulful brand of funky country music was fully coming into its own. That groove-driven sound became the backbone of his career, showcased in legendary performances like his 1982 Austin City Limits appearance. The upcoming reissue shines a light not only on White’s unmistakable style, but also on his Nashville years, where he penned songs alongside friends like Waylon Jennings during the outlaw country boom of the ’70s. Today, White’s estate unveiled the album’s latest single: “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Cowboys Grow Up To Be Babies” a rollicking, tongue-in-cheek spin on Waylon & Willie’s 1978 classic. Written by Tony Joe and Leann White, the track features none other than Waylon Jennings himself on guitar and vocals. “Obviously a parody of the original and written in good fun,” says Jody White. “Waylon singing on the track just makes it legit.” Jody describes the song as a playful anthem about raising boys to be free-spirited and tough—like “real” cowboys. “Let him run free, have fun, and grow into the man he’s meant to be,” Jody says with a smile.
