Troy Mercy Drops Cinematic New Single “Compromised Blues (A Spy Goodbye)” Ahead of Debut Album Let the Night Begin
Troy Mercy doesn’t ease listeners in—he throws them straight into the action. On “Compromised Blues (A Spy Goodbye),” the Americana, rock & roll, and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter crafts a cinematic escape narrative, unfolding like the climactic final act of a spy thriller: identity exposed, tension mounting, and no clear exit in sight. The track serves as the fourth single from his forthcoming debut album, Let the Night Begin, arriving May 29 via Gitcha Records.

Premiered exclusively by American Blues Scene ahead of its official release, “Compromised Blues (A Spy Goodbye)” leans into Mercy’s stripped-down power duo approach, where guitar and drums share equal intensity, propelled by drummer Harrison Foti.

“I imagined it like dropping into the final act of a spy film—our hero’s cover is blown, and the race is on to escape before everything collapses,” Mercy explains. His guitar work fuses rhythm and lead into a single, relentless force rooted in blues tradition. “It’s an extension of players like John Lee Hooker and Eddie Taylor—that simultaneous rhythm-and-lead style, always carrying a sense of danger, like everything is on the line.”

With Tim Carman (Parlor Greens, formerly of GA-20) producing, the album stays grounded in feel and groove. While Let the Night Begin marks Mercy’s first solo studio album, his journey to this point has been anything but tentative. He has toured and collaborated with icons like Booker T. and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, as well as artists connected to Muddy Waters’ band, including Hubert Sumlin, Billy Boy Arnold, and Pinetop Perkins. He has also contributed to Grammy-nominated work with Kim Wilson—experiences that inform the record while he continues to carve out a sound distinctly his own.
