Willie Nelson Honors Merle Haggard on New Album Workin’ Man: Willie Sings Merle

Release date: November 7, 2025
Workin’ Man: Willie Sings Merle marks Willie Nelson’s 78th solo studio album and 155th release overall. The album features Nelson’s heartfelt new interpretations of classic songs written by his longtime friend and collaborator, Merle Haggard continuing Nelson’s celebrated tradition of spotlighting the work of a single songwriter or artist.

Nelson and Haggard shared a friendship and musical bond spanning decades, resulting in three beloved collaborative albums: Pancho and Lefty (1983), Last of the Breed (2007, with Ray Price), and Django and Jimmie (2015).

For Workin’ Man, Nelson handpicked eleven of his favorite Haggard compositions, representing every era of the country icon’s career. The collection ranges from early hits off Haggard’s first #1 country album Swinging Doors (1966) including “Swinging Doors” and “Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down”  to late-’60s anthems like “Mama Tried” and “Okie From Muskogee.” Nelson also revisits 1970s favorites such as the poignant holiday classic “If We Make It Through December” and the southern rock–infused “Ramblin’ Fever,” as well as Haggard’s 1980 #1 honky-tonk hit “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink.”

Produced by Nelson with longtime collaborator Mickey Raphael, Workin’ Man was recorded at Nelson’s Pedernales Studios in Austin, Texas. The album also holds special significance as it features the final recordings with two of Nelson’s closest Family Band members  his sister and pianist “Sister Bobbie” Nelson, and drummer Paul English. Rounding out the lineup are Raphael on harmonica, Kevin Smith on bass, and Billy English on drums and percussion.

Workin’ Man: Willie Sings Merle is both a celebration of Merle Haggard’s songwriting genius and a deeply personal tribute from one country music legend to another.
