Willie Nelson, now in his seventh decade as a songwriter, performer, and recording artist,
continues to showcase his often overlooked talent for song interpretation.

Release date: November 1, 2024

Throughout his illustrious career, he has made songs from various genres entirely his own. As he celebrates his 91st year, Willie releases his 76th studio album and 153rd overall, turning his attention to a selection of tracks by rock icons, distinctive singer-songwriters, alt-rock pioneers, and indie folk artists. This album is a beautifully cohesive exploration of loss, love, and weary hope, enhanced by its sparse and haunting musical production.

Lovingly curated and produced by his son Micah Nelson, Last Leaf On The Tree features Willie’s interpretations of moody indie rock (Beck), psychedelic alt-pop (The Flaming Lips), and punk-infused folk (Sunny War, Micah’s Particle Kid), alongside thoughtful soul jazz (Nina Simone) and rare gems from legends like Tom Waits, Neil Young, Keith Richards, and Warren Zevon. The album also includes a fresh take on one of Willie’s earliest songs (“The Ghost” from 1962) and a new track co-written with Micah (“The Color Of Sound”), adding to Willie’s collection of Zen-infused classics.

Micah not only produced the album but also played many of the instruments and designed the album cover. He is joined by an ensemble of celebrated musicians, with guest appearances from legendary producer and musician Daniel Lanois, John Densmore of The Doors, and harmonica virtuoso Mickey Raphael, who has been playing alongside Willie for over 50 years.

Willie Nelson, alongside icons like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and Townes Van Zandt, emerged as a key figure in the late 1960s "outlaw country" movement, a subgenre that rebelled against the conservatism of Nashville's country music scene. His journey began humbly, earning just fifty dollars for his first song, “Family Bible.” Soon after, songwriter Hank Cochran helped him secure a publishing contract, paving the way for Nelson to become one of country music's most prolific songwriters. He penned some of the genre's most enduring classics, including “Night Life” for Rusty Draper, “Funny How Time Slips Away” for Jimmy Elledge and Johnny Tillotson, “Crazy” for Patsy Cline, “Hello Walls” for Faron Young, “Wake Me When It’s Over” for Andy Williams, and “Pretty Paper” for Roy Orbison.

Despite securing a recording contract, Nelson’s weathered tenor and preference for sparse arrangements were initially deemed uncommercial. However, his breakthrough came with the release of Shotgun Willie in 1973, an album widely regarded as one of his greatest. It showcased his unique talents as a singer, storyteller, and performer. Decades later, with his signature headband and braided pigtails, "The Red Headed Stranger" continues to tour and captivate audiences, cementing his legacy as a true country music legend.
