In a trademark fight over 'kraftwerk,' who has the power?
Get out the German translation dictionary, because Ralf Hütter has met a machine where co-existence raises a novel legal issue. On Monday (March 9), the Kraftwerk co-founder and frontman filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against eZelleron Inc., the makers of an energy supply unit for mobile electronic devices. As the leader of electro-pop pioneers Kraftwerk, Hütter is arguably one of the most influential musicians living today. Long before Daft Punk and deadmau5 were on the electronic dance scene, Hu?tter's outfit was combining classical minimalism with melodic pop to the groove of a robotic future. Albums like 'Trans-Europe Express', 'Man-Machine ' and 'Computer World' are in the pantheon, leading the group to be honored with a Grammy lifetime achievement award last year. Meanwhile, the Dresdon-based eZelleron has been taking advantage of fuel cell technologyto raise more than $1.5 million on Kickstarter for a portable power plant that it says can be recharged within seconds and provide weeks of charge for iPhones, tablets and GoPro cameras. Written up in many tech publications, the tech product is called "Kraftwerk." That doesn't sit well with Hu?tter, who owns a trademark registration on "Kraftwerk" that covers quite a bit of territory. For example, they have video data and optical data in the field of music entertainment covered. "Defendant is taking advance orders for the KRAFTWERK charging device," states the complaint filed in Delaware federal court. "Therefore, consumers are likely to assume that there is a connection, association, or relationship between the famous electronic Music band and a charger for portable musical-playing devices." Here's the potential systems error: In German, Kraftwerk translates as "power station." That arguably makes it descriptive, meaning Hütter will have to show secondary meaning. Fortunately for Hütter, most Americans don't know German. But can Hütter get online service providers and fundraising platforms to remove references to eZelleron's Kraftwerk? Loïc Nottet verdedigt de kleuren van België op de 60ste editie van het Eurosongfestival met ‘Rhythm inside’, het lied dat hij vanmorgen in een vol Wien-Haus in Brussel heeft voorgesteld. De jongeman uit Courcelles (in de provincie Henegouwen) zal het in een eerste ronde tegen vijftien andere Europese zangers opnemen tijdens de eerste halve finale van de wedstrijd, die op 19 mei in Wenen wordt gehouden.
Het liedje is door Beverly Jo Scott geschreven, de ex-coach van Loïc Nottet voor het tv-programma "The Voice Belgique" op de RTBF, en gecomponeerd door de zanger zelf. ‘Rhythm inside’ gaat erover dat elkeen door zijn keuzes de richting die hij wil aan zijn leven geeft. Met pop- en elektroklanken waar soms hiphop doorschemert, wil de vertolker "iedereen doen dansen". Nottet, een veelzijdige artiest, nam aan het hele ontwerp van het project deel - de choreografie, stilering en visuele effecten - en omringde zich ook met een ploeg van hoog niveau om ‘Rhythm inside’ te maken. Het lied werd geproducet door Luuk Cox/Shameboy (Stromae, My little cheap dictaphone, Girls in Hawaii) en gemasterd door Stuart Hawkes van de Londense studio Metropolis (Sam Smith, Lorde, Amy Winehouse). De Belg neemt het in de Wiener Stadhalle in de Oostenrijkse hoofdstad onder meer op tegen de zangers uit Finland, Nederland, Rusland en Roemenië. Sam Smith weigert naar Rusland te reizen. Op die manier protesteert hij tegen de anti-homowetten die in het land van kracht zijn. Smith, zelf openlijk homoseksueel, ziet het niet zitten om op te treden in het land van president Vladimir Poetin.

Maar toch wil de popster er niet optreden omwille van de manier waarop de holebi-gemeenschap er wordt behandeld. "Ik ga niet naar Rusland", zegt hij in The Sun. "Ik heb er fans, maar de manier waarop ze mensen er behandelen is verschrikkelijk. In de Verenigde Staten denk je dat ze voorop lopen als het gaat over verdraagzaamheid, maar er is nog een lange weg te gaan. Je kan je dus best wel voorstellen hoe erg het in andere landen gesteld is. Dat maakt me boos", zegt Smith. "Hier in het Verenigd Koninkrijk denken we dat het ondertussen is opgelost. In januari werd de eerste single van Elvis, een plaat uit 1953 met "My Happiness" en "That's When Your Heartaches Begin", op een veiling voor 300.000 dollar verkocht aan een anonieme koper. Nu blijkt dat het niet zomaar een fan was, maar dat rockmuzikant Jack White eigenaar is geworden van de single, zo schrijft het muziekblad Rolling Stone. White heeft bovendien plannen met de schijf: hij wil die op komende Record Day Store opnieuw uitbrengen op vinyl.
De plaat met "My Happiness" en "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" werd door een toen 18-jarige Elvis opgenomen op 18 juli 1953 bij Sam Philips' Memphis Recording Store voor 4 dollar. Er bestaat maar één exemplaar van en dat kwam in het bezit van Elvis' vriend Ed Leek. Diens dochter liet de single zestig jaar later veilen. Volgens Billboard magazine werd de plaat door een onbekende met een zwart koffertje opgehaald in Memphis en overgebracht naar het platenlabel van Jack White, Third Man Records, in Nashville. Third Man Records is voortdurend op zoek naar inventieve manieren om vinyl op de markt te brengen, en gaat nu dus aan de slag met de Elvis-single. Bedoeling is dat die op Record Day Store, een internationaal georganiseerde feestdag waarop wereldwijd de platenwinkels en platenlabels extra activiteiten organiseren om de branche te promoten, op 18 april in de platenzaken ligt. Zelf zei White die, toepasselijk detail, sinds kort met een Elviskapsel door het leven gaat, aan Billboard dat hij digitaal luistert in de auto en vinyl in de slaapkamer. Reden: in de auto zet de rockster zijn muziek graag heel luid. (HLN) 
Disco hits such as ‘Get Down Tonight’ and ‘That's The Way (I Like It)’ have inextricably linked KC & the Sunshine Band to the 70s. But Harry Wayne Casey and company are tripping into the preceding decade with the March 10 release of ‘Feeling You!’ The 60's.
The 17-song set features Sunshine Band takes on songs by Bob Dylan, the Righteous Brothers, the Kinks, Ben E. King, Jackie DeShannon and plenty of Motown. "It's kind of like a musical diary of my life, basically," Casey tells Billboard. "My teen years were all in the 60s; I graduated (from high school) in 1969, so those were the set-up years that would become the biggest influences on the music I was going to create. Motown's probably my biggest influence, along with James Brown and Joe Cocker, Blood, Sweat & Tears." Three of ‘Feeling You!’'s tracks – the Supremes’ ‘I Hear a Symphony’ and ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’ and the Miracles' ‘You Really Got a Hold on Me’ -- come from the Motown songbook, and Casey confesses that, "I was a Motown freak. It was hard not to do a whole Motown album while selecting the songs." Listen to the group's rendition of the Supremes classic ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’, which Billboard is exclusively premiering. ‘Feeling You’, Casey says, actually grew out of a new original music project, the Sunshine Band's first since 2007's ‘Yummy’. "I started doing a new album, and in my shows I like to do covers, so I started recording some of those and started thinking about doing a two-record set with 17 original songs and 17 songs from the '60s," he says. "I'd never done a complete collection of covers; I'm kind of the last man in on that. It just felt like the timing was right; I'm in a good place mentally and everything else, so I just thought, 'Why not? Just do it.' And I had a blast." Those new songs are coming, too. Casey collaborated on some with the U.K. dance collective Bimbo Jones, and he hopes to have a single from that set of songs out soon with the album to follow during the late spring or early summer. "It's a mixture of today's sounds and what people know me for," Casey says. "The tracks sent to be by the DJs were more electronic and we added horns and stuff to make them a little more KC-ish. And the stuff I recorded just with the band is more funky, groovier type of stuff. I think it's a great mixture of uptempo and midtempo stuff." Casey is also planning to release a holiday album in November, making for "a pretty big KC & the Sunshine Band year" on the 40th anniversary of the self-titled, triple-platinum album that launched the group into the star strata. "It never seems like 40 (years). It really doesn't," says Casey. "But it is. It's hard to think I'm really on my way to my 50th year, actually, so it's going quickly." What he does hope, however, is that the year's releases give fans a perspective on the group that's broader than the disco hits -- including 1983's ‘Give It Up’, currently featured in Kingsman: The Secret Service -- that are the Sunshine Band's stock in trade. "I feel like it showcases that I'm a little bit more than just 'That's the way, uh-huh, I like it,' " acknowledges Casey, adding that he would consider a second volume of '60s music if Feeling You! is well-received. "I would like to explore some other things, too, like do something country. The Christmas album is in the works right now, as I speak, and that's becoming exciting for me. There's a lot of different things I wanted to do. I love all kinds of music -- mostly R&B stuff, 'cause that's where my roots are, but country, blues, there's even a little rock side to Harry Wayne Casey. She’s been cast as the legendary entertainer Josephine Baker in the musical ‘Josephine’, inspired by Stephen Papich’s book ‘Remembering Josephine’, which is about the life of Baker between the years 1939-1945. ‘Josephine’ will be directed and produced by Tony Award-winner Kenneth Waissman and will premiere sometime in April. According to a press release, the musical “will revolve around Baker’s stint as the star of the Folies Bergere in Paris between 1939-45, her scandalous affair with Swedish Crown Prince Gustav VI, and her heroic service in the French Resistance during World War II.” Waissman adds, “For a number of years, I had been intrigued with the idea of recreating the glamorous and exotic world of Josephine Baker in a stage musical. She was a larger than life African-American expatriate who transcended her color, her gender and her times. Her exotic looks, fabulous gowns and feathered headdresses, her obsession with her royal lover and her life-risking exploits in the French underground during WWII provide the sex, romance and intrigue of this original new musical.” Cox is a Broadway veteran; she’s been cast as Aida and as Lucy in the 2013 revival of ‘Jekyll & Hyde’. Even after three and half decades of smoking hot guitar licks, powerful vocal performances, and just plain kick ass, foot stomping rock & roll, legendary guitar slinger Pat Travers is still firing on all boosters! Fresh off the Rock Legends Cruise in February, Travers takes the helm of another ship with Retro Rocket, a powerful new album of studio recordings to be released by Purple Pyramid Records on March 17. The R&B world is mourning after losing another voice!
Charmayne Maxwell, a member of 90s R&B group Brownstone, passed away on Friday (Feb. 27) after a deadly fall in her home. It’s currently unclear how the accident happened, but her husband, music producer Carsten Soulshock, who found her unconscious and bleeding profusely, discovered her around 9 pm. Carsten called 911, but Charmayne passed away during the transport to LA’s Cedars Sinai Hospital, possibly after losing too much blood. TMZ reports that Charmayne may have fallen on a wine glass, which caused a deep laceration to her neck during the fall. Charmayne was reportedly home alone with her son following his soccer game. No foul play is suspected at this time. Brownstone was signed to the late King of Pop Michael Jackson's MJJ Music label –their biggest hit is 1995's ‘If You Love Me’. Festivalfavorieten Kaiser Chiefs, The Jesus and Mary Chain én Mark Lanegan Band vullen de Lokerse Feestenaffiche op woensdag 5 augustus. De organisatie meldt ook dat Belle and Sebastian het eerder aangekondigde dEUS vervoegt op maandag 3 augustus.
De Britse indieband Kaiser Chiefs, door jong en oud gekend van de singles ‘Coming Home’ of ‘My Life’ uit de succesplaat ‘Education, Education, Education & War’ (2014) beloven volgens de organisatie ‘een feest zonder weerga en een topavond voor mensen die er een sport van maken om hun longen naar de vaantjes te schreeuwen tijdens op maat van voetbalstadions gemaakte refreinen.’ Dezelfde avond, woensdag 5 augustus, zal The Jesus and Mary Chain hun meesterwerk ‘Psychocandy’ integraal komen spelen. Die debuutplaat van de Schotse band uit midden jaren tachtig blijft voor de Lokerse Feesten ‘revolutionair en onovertroffen’. Muzikale meerwaardezoekers worden die avond ook nog eens getrakteerd met de Mark Lanegan Band. Vanaf deze zomer zullen wereldwijd alle nieuwe muziekalbums niet langer op dinsdag, zoals dat al jarenlang het geval is, maar op vrijdag worden gereleased. De internationale muziekfederatie (IFPI) heeft die beslissing genomen na gesprekken met alle betrokken partijen uit de muzieksector: artiesten, platenlabels, muziekwinkels en muziekdiensten zoals onder andere Spotify.
Deze nieuwe maatregel zou volgens de IFPI eenheid moeten scheppen onder de nationale markten . Tot op heden werden nieuwe muziekalbums niet overal ter wereld gelijktijdig uitgebracht. Dat werkt muziekpiraterij in de hand en daar wil de IFPI nu een einde aan maken. ‘Een vaste internationale releasedatum moet de muziekconsument ten goede komen en zal artiesten in staat stellen om duidelijk te communiceren naar hun fans op sociale media’, zegt IFPI. De IFPI heeft voor deze beslissing ook rekening gehouden met een studie over het consumentengedrag. Daaruit bleek dat mensen vaker op vrijdag en op zaterdag online muziekalbums aankochten. ‘Omdat ook veel mensen niet moeten werken in het weekend, zijn ze veel vatbaarder voor impulsaankopen. De beslissing van een wereldwijde releasedatum is dus ook goed nieuws voor de platenlabels’, klinkt het bij IFPI. De nieuwe muziekalbums zullen vanaf de zomer om exact 00.01 uur van donderdag op vrijdag verkocht worden door online-shops en streamingsdiensten. (Bron: Het Belang Van Limburg).  Liam Gallagher heeft zich nog eens van zijn meest collegiale kant laten zien. Via Twitter heeft hij Kanye West kort en bondig omschreven als "utter shit". Hij deed dat naar aanleiding van het omstreden optreden van Kanye West tijdens de uitreiking van de Brit Awards.
Kanye West mocht gisteren de uitreiking van de Britse muziekprijzen opfleuren, maar het nummer dat hij bracht werd bijna volledig weggebiept door zender ITV. 'All Day' staat immers bol van het profane taalgebruik, en dat vond ITV niet kunnen. Ook Liam Gallagher vond het concert van West maar niks, en noemde de Amerikaanse rapper op Twitter "utter shit". Hij stelde ook dat West niet meer in de buurt komt van het niveau dat hij haalde op zijn debuut 'The College Dropout' en suggereerde dat de rapper wat beter naar Lee Mavers van de Britse rockgroep The La's zou luisteren. Kanye West kondigde vorige week aan dat zijn nieuwe, zevende album "voor 80 procent klaar is" en dat het gereleased zal worden als een verrassingsalbum. (Bron: De Morgen) 
Ellende baart soms pure schoonheid. Vier jaar lang verdween Tom Helsen van de aardbodem om in stilte tegen zijn demonen te vechten. Vandaag klautert hij recht met het gloednieuwe album 'Unbreakable'. "We leven in een klotewereld en alles is verkloot, maar voor mij lijkt alles in z'n plooi te vallen."
Tom Helsen is terug en krijgt daarbij net geen stoet en fanfare. Universal ontving de zanger met de rode loper voor zijn eerste grote platencontract ooit. Radiozenders draaien unaniem zijn nieuwe single en zijn albumrelease was nieuws voor VRT en VTM. Bij die laatste zender kreeg hij er zelfs prompt een plaats in hun gloednieuwe programma 'Liefde voor muziek' bovenop. "Eigenlijk had ik mezelf bij mijn comeback twee jaar gegeven om opnieuw te staan waar ik stond voor mijn depressie. Maar nu lijk ik plots veel verder te staan", klinkt het bijna verontschuldigend in de Leuvense muziekwinkel Caerts, omgeven door gitaren. Al loert zijn zwarte beest steeds om de hoek. Vier jaar geleden trok Helsen de stekker uit zijn eigen carrière. Concerten werden afgelast. Een depressie hield hem al die tijd in anonimiteit. Tom lacht weer, maar het gevaar is niet geweken. "Nee, dat is niet weg. Mijn depressie is eeuwigblijvend. Maar ik heb een manier gevonden om ermee om te gaan. Ik weet nu wat het is. Ik kan het inschatten. Maar tegelijk weet ik dat het er altijd zal zijn. Wat voor mij erg belangrijk was, is dat ik de zin om muziek te maken heb teruggevonden. Vier jaar geleden was die helemaal weg. Ik had geen zin meer om te spelen. Dat was verschrikkelijk. Dat was het ergste wat er is." (Bron: HLN) Live Nation kondigt vandaag de tourdata aan van Madonna's langverwachte 'Rebel Heart Tour'! De popkoningin doet 35 steden aan, waarvan 14 in Europa. Nadat Madonna eerder al te gast was op Werchter Boutique en in het Koning Boudewijnstadion, concerteert ze nu voor het eerst indoor in ons land, op zaterdag 28 november in het Sportpaleis met de 'Rebel Heart Tour' geproduceerd door Live Nation Global Touring.

Drie splinternieuwe nummers stegen in geen tijd naar de top van de iTunes Charts. Haar huidige single "Living For Love" staat op nummer 1 in de Billboard Dance Charts, al de 44ste keer dat ze die toppositie behaalt! De popdiva bracht deze song onlangs nog live met een schitterende performance op de Grammy Awards en de Brit Awards. Madonna wordt wereldwijd gelauwerd als zangeres, songwriter en producer, maar heeft ook de reputatie van één van 's werelds meest succesvolle live-artiesten aller tijden. Haar 'Sticky & Sweet Tour' (2008/2009) gaat de geschiedenisboeken in als de meest winstgevende tournee van een soloartiest en de 'MDNA Tour' was de meest succesvolle tournee van 2012. Het is dus reikhalzend uitkijken naar haar nieuwste 'Rebel Heart Tour', die op zaterdag 28 november halt houdt in het Antwerpse Sportpaleis!
