REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL, PART 5: MILES DAVIS: FREEDOM JAZZ DANCE: THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL. 5 UIT OP 21/10

August 18, 2016-New York, NY-Columbia/Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5 on Friday, October 21, 2016. http://smarturl.it/MD_FreedomJazz_AMZN
A 3CD box set collection chronicling Miles' musical evolution in the studio from 1966-1968 working with his "second great quintet," the latest edition in Columbia/Legacy's acclaimed Miles Davis Bootleg Series provides an unprecedented look into the artist's creative process, drawing on full session reels including all rehearsals, partial and alternate takes, extensive and fascinating studio conversation and more.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Miles Smiles, the groundbreaking second studio album from the Miles Davis Quintet--Miles Davis (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Herbie Hancock(piano), Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums)--this definitive new collection includes the master takes of performances which would appear on the Miles Smiles (1967), Nefertiti (1968) and WaterBabies (recorded 1967, released 1976) albums alongside more than two hours worth of previously unreleased studio recordings from original sessions produced by Teo Macero (with the exception of"Fall," produced by Howard A. Roberts).
"Circle," "Orbits," "Dolores" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" were recorded at the historic Columbia 30th Street Studio in New York City on October 24, 1966. "Gingerbread Boy" and "Footprints" were recorded at the same location the following day, October 25, 1966. Full session reels – every second of music and dialogue – that were taped for the Miles Smiles album are included. Prior to this the only material ever released from the classic album were the master takes for the six songs. Never before have the full session reels for an entire Miles Columbia album been released, here providing an in-depth look at the studio process of one of jazz’s greatest bandleaders, and arguably the greatest small jazz group ever.
"Masqualero", heard on the set in a previously unreleased alternate take, was recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio on May 17, 1967. "Water Babies" and "Nefertiti" were recorded there on June 7, 1967. "Fall" was cut at the Columbia studio on July 19, 1967. Complete session reels for “Water Babies”, “Nefertiti” and “Fall” are included in the box.
"Country Son", heard in a unique previously unreleased rhythm section only rehearsal, was recorded at Columbia Studio B in New York City on May 15, 1968.
Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5 box set was produced for contemporary release by the multi Grammy Award winning team of Steve Berkowitz, Michael Cuscuna and Richard Seidel. The album was mixed from the original 4-track tapes and mastered by Grammy Award winning engineer Mark Wilder, Battery Studios, New York City, July 2016.
In addition to more than two hours of previously unreleased studio sessions, the collection includes "Blues in F (My Ding)," a rare and unique home recording featuring Miles, demonstrating on piano a new blues he was working on to Wayne Shorter.
Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5 includes revelatory behind-the-scenes liner notes penned by Grammy Award-winning Ashley Kahn, author of Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece, as well as new interviews with Quintet members Ron Carter and Wayne Shorter.
Sourced from original four-track analog session reels and master tapes transferred and mixed in high resolution at 24-bit/192 kHz, Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol 5 offers a profound and intimate look at Miles' creative process in the studio, providing insight into the bold new musical directions Davis and members of his quintet would take as the 1960s drew to a close.

With one eyeliner-stained eye looking back over a black-clad shoulder, Adoration Destroyed has arrived with a sound that simultaneously harkens back to the dark electronic music of the past, seductively merged with bleeding-edge production culled from modern EDM. This Austin, TX-based band features leader Erik Gustafson (also a member of 16 Volt and Noir) on synths and vocals and a scorching live band that consists of Eirik Ashe on drums and Jon Gilyeat on bass. Adoration Destroyed has performed with acts such as God Module and Skold while also appearing on the highly touted compilation Electronic Saviors. On the heels of their successful single “Carnal Dirge,” that Intravenous Magazine called “a smoldering blend of steady dance beats, grooving bass and rhythmic dance leads that will play well to dancefloors around the world,” Cleopatra Records will be releasing Adoration Destroyed’s debut album Ritual Damage on September 9th. The album features superb production on the 9 original tracks plus fantastic cover versions of Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” and Marilyn Manson’s “Coma White,” along with a pair of exclusive remixes from 16 Volt and Mr.Kitty!
Look for Adoration Destroyed on a full U.S. tour in support of Ego Likeness that will start around Halloween, a rather fitting time of year for the somber sonnets, eyeliner and electro-dirge of Adoration Destroyed!

22-time GRAMMY® Winner Reveals Epic 2016 Schedule: 177 Shows, 26 Ensembles, 60 Musicians
LOS ANGELES, CA - Music legend Chick Corea is spending his 75th birthday at home: on the road.
Corea has spent 50 years on the world's most venerated stages, playing with a pantheon of fellow-traveling musical compatriots, and now he's packing it all into one year.
For 2016, he's lined up an Iron-Man marathon of tour dates, literally circling the globe: Phoenix to Minneapolis to Naples to Stuttgart to Tokyo to Beijing to Honolulu and back to LA.
This activity will lead up to the greatest jazz birthday party ever: an unprecedented two-month residency at New York's Blue Note Jazz Club this fall, where Chick has assembled an unprecedented lineup of giants to do what they do best: create music magic, two shows a night, for eight straight weeks.
But it all started in April, which opened with Chick at the star-studded International Jazz Day concert, broadcast nationwide from The White House lawn. An East Coast duet tour with Béla Fleck preceded a solid month of shows in Japan with fellow pianist Makoto Ozone-including two nights with the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo playing Mozart's "Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra." July brought European concerts with the all-star "Homage to Heroes" quintet, featuring Wallace Roney, Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and Marcus Gilmore.
The past week at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood - ask any Chick fan - has been a long time coming: the Chick Corea Elektric Band returned, (Aug. 17-24) for a celebratory 7 nights and 14 sold-out shows at the iconic Hollywood club, which has hosted many legendary Corea performances. The classic lineup is in force: Corea, Dave Weckl (drums), John Patitucci (bass), Eric Marienthal (sax), Frank Gambale (guitar). The Elektric Band will also do a handful of U.S. theater dates in October, and kickoff Chick's landmark residency at the Blue Note New York.
An Italian excursion in September finds Chick renewing his legendary lifelong duo conversation with vibraphonist Gary Burton, including headlining La Villette Jazz Festival in Paris.
In the run-up to the Blue Note Celebration, Chick has managed to fit in three different configurations of his Trilogy trio: Following US performances in June and July with the GRAMMY®-winning band with Christian McBride (bass) and Brian Blade (drums), including performances at the Newport Jazz Festival where Chick was named Artist of the Year, younger firebrands Avishai Cohen (bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums) join Chick for appearances in September in Israel, Kiev, and more throughout Europe and Asia. The trio will headline the grand opening of the Blue Note Beijing on Sept. 13. The legendary Eddie Gomez (bass) falls in with Corea and Blade for a residency at the Blue Note Hawaii (Sep. 21-24) and the San Francisco Jazz Festival (Sep. 29 - Oct. 2), plus West Coast concerts in September and October.
Back in his musical home, New York City, the Blue Note residency (Oct. 19 - Dec. 11) is the kind of honor and celebration befitting a career like Corea's: 22 GRAMMY® wins. NEA Jazz Master. Downbeat Magazine Hall-of-Famer. An artistic voice that has influenced and been inspired by countless musical traditions: modern jazz to traditional flamenco, western classical to electric jazz-fusion, acclaimed solo performances to many high-profile collaborations.
All the facets of his restless creativity will be on display at the Blue Note, in 80 shows with 60 iconic musicians playing in 15 bands (see www.bluenotejazz.com for a detailed listing).
These include a tribute to his mentor Miles Davis with other Davis alumnae; a week with longtime partner-in-crime and drum legend Steve Gadd; two nights of experimental electronica with drummer Marcus Gilmore and guests; and the return the Flamenco Heart. The Harlem String Quartet will join the simpatico duo partnership with Gary Burton. Perennial fan-favorite projects with Origin and the 15-piece Trodheim Jazz Orchestra will also occupy the Blue Note stage, plus a three-night series of duets with pianists yet to be announced.
The final two weeks of the run will feature the music of Return to Forever and more in two different contexts: the acoustic lineup (Nov. 30 - Dec. 4) includes Ravi Coltrane (sax), Hubert Laws (flute), Avishai Cohen (bass) and RTF drummer Lenny White; an electric band (Dec. 8-11) dubbed Return to Forever Meets Mahavishnu, featuring fellow legend John McLaughlin on guitar, bassist Victor Wooten and drummer White, will also delve into some classic Mahavishnu Orchestra material.
Corea's 2016 tour schedule is a shorthand sketch of his entire musical life: a virtuosic summary of 50 years of creativity, and a confident step toward exciting new possibilities for the future.

Britain’s best-loved rockers Status Quo are delighted to confirm that on 21st October 2016 they will release ‘Aquostic II – That’s A Fact!’ via earMUSIC on CD, limited edition double vinyl and Deluxe 25 Track Edition 2CD. The standard CD edition of this carefully curated collection includes 14 reimagined Quo classics such as ‘In The Army Now’, ‘Hold You Back’, ‘Roll Over Lay Down’, ‘Ice In The Sun’ and two brand new tracks. These and extra tracks are available on deluxe / vinyl, as well as another brand new song ‘Is Someone Rocking Your Heart?’. The song ‘For You’, released originally on ‘Rockin' All Over The World’, is available only on the 20 track vinyl format. The deluxe edition comes with a second disc which features 5 ‘Aquostic II’ bonus tracks as well as 6 tracks recorded at the band’s 2014 Stuttgart ‘Aquostic’ show, which are unavailable elsewhere.
‘Aquostic II – That’s A Fact!’ is the follow up to the phenomenally successful ‘Aquostic (Stripped Bare)’ album of 2014 which was a Gold-certified UK Top 5 hit, giving the band their highest chart placing for 18 years. Additionally, Quo will perform a very special one-off ‘Aquostic’ show in Hyde Park at BBC Radio 2’s ‘Festival In A Day’ on 11th September 2016. NB the album has been re-titled from the previously announced ‘Aquostic II - One More For The Road’.
With their ‘Aquostic’ initiative, after 50 years at the top of their game as one of the world’s premiere hard rock acts, Status Quo have leapt out of their comfort zone. With the band having stated that ‘The Last Night Of The Electrics Tour’ which comes to venues across Europe will be the last ever full tour featuring the thunderous Telecaster sound, it’s time to look ahead. This is the future.
BELGIAN LIVE DATE
Sat 03 Dec 2016 - AB Concert
The 'aquostic’ approach represents something of a new dawn for the band. Guitarist Rick Parfitt is currently recuperating from ongoing medical issues following a heart attack in Turkey two months ago and the band wish him a speedy and full recovery and look forward to welcoming him back into the fold.
‘Aquostic II – That’s A Fact!’ offers a generous helping of Quo classics that are immediately recognisable, and yet demonstrably re-engineered; this is the sound of a band living in the present, embracing the future, whilst cherishing their past.
Classic Rock recently named ‘Aquostic’ as one of the top 25 acoustic albums ever saying the reworked songs, “Scratch the band’s melodic underbelly in the most celebratory way possible”, having previously said of the new approach, “It works. Brilliantly. Quo acoustic? It’s no gimmick”.
The Times said, “It’s time to… reclaim them as one of Britain’s great bands.”
The Sun said simply that ‘Aquostic’, “Helps confirm their national treasure status”.
On his new Album 'Grand Départ' Fritz Kalkbrenner stays loyal to his signature sound, which he developed with his last Album 'Ways over Water' in 2014. The East-Berlin singer, producer and composer reaches superior levels of expert arrangements and powerful-analog sound-design, where it’s easy for one to get lost within the music.
The "Grand Départ" is the first day of the Tour de France, and for Fritz Kalkbrenner it stands for the starting shot of taking an idea and turning it into a Gesamtkunstwerk – thus a deserving name for an album. Kalkbrenner’s thinking goes against the grain: For years, people - especially those in the electronic music genre - have been heralding the death of the album format, but he can’t and will not let go of it. Even today, in the age of the self-curated playlist, he is obsessed with getting the track order just right.
The album title also references French cinema of the late 1960s – the heavy, smoky and earthy sounds of woodwind and brass brings the listener into the Film-Noir feel of the Melville classics like "Le Samouraï" with Alain Delon and the “stains, on the napkins and curtains in smoker-yellow”, as Kalkbrenner jokingly adds. Exactly this aesthetic is carried on in the cover artwork for 'Grand Départ'.
'Grand Départ' is a big album, a statement from a non-conformist who out of principle doesn’t live in the past – but who at the same time isn’t ready to lower the bar out of indifference. Kalkbrenner always quoted a phrase when chatting about music with his peers: “He who doesn’t go with the times, goes in time”. The quote is still relevant to him, but his point-of-view has changed. “Maybe I will actually go at some point”, he laughs. “But that time has nowhere near come.” 'Grand Départ' bears witness to this.
‘Grand Départ’ ‘will be released on October the 14th through BMG Chrysalis/8Ball Records and a PIAS distribution.
It has been 3 years since multi-award-winning Katie Melua released ‘Ketevan', her 6th and final album through her creative partnership with Mike Batt and Dramatico. There is no question that Katie and Mike achieved immense success during their 10+ years of working together, but the release of 'In Winter' this October, Katie's first album as a truly independent artist, marks a significant new chapter in her creative evolution. Unlike her prior releases, 'In Winter' sees Katie taking over the reigns as creative director, principal song-writer, recording artist, and producer, to create an album that is very much of her own making. The album is focused on exploring the themes of Winter, both festive and personal. For many Winter is bitter-sweet, full of feelings of love, family, gifting, magic, warmth, and celebration, but equally: melancholy, regret, dashed hopes, a longing to return home, and, of course, the cold. The creation of 'In Winter' has also provided Melua the opportunity to engage in a far richer perspective on 2 different cultures that are so close to her: the West and the ex-Soviet Union. She didn't only record the album in Gori, Georgia (her country of birth), but has also been drawing from the rich traditions of carols and folk-tales from the region.
Katie has spent the last 18 months traveling between her home in London, and the town of Gori, where she has been working with a phenomenal group of 23 female singers called Gori Women’s Choir. She has wanted to work with the choir for many years now, and this record has finally presented the perfect opportunity. She has also enlisted the immense talents of Oxford-based Bob Chilcott, whose work as a choral arranger is nothing short of world-renowned. And as much as the quality of the music is of paramount importance, so, too, is the aesthetic presentation. This aspect of the work is being created by an exemplary illustrator by the name of Niroot Puttapipat, originally from Thailand and now based in London. Niroot has an incredible talent of bringing words to life in pictures. He works only by hand, and has illustrated such notable book titles as The Nutcracker, The Rubáiyát of Omar Khattám, and Jane Austen’s Emma.
‘In Winter’ opens with the traditional Ukrainian Carol introduced to the West as Carol of the Bells, and closes with a show-stopping rendition of 'O Holy Night'. The album also features 4 brand new songs written by Melua, as well as a truly magnificent cover-version of Joni Mitchell’s festive classic, ‘River'.
‘In Winter’ ‘will be released on October the 14th through BMG Chrysalis/8Ball Records and a PIAS distribution.

Presentatie nieuw album The Holographic Principle op Epic Metal Fest
Het album wordt gepresenteerd tijdens de enige Beneluxshow die de band dit jaar geeft, namelijk op Epica’s eigen festival Epic Metal Fest op 1 oktober a.s. in 013 Tilburg waar in totaal twaalf bands op twee podia zullen spelen, te weten: Katatonia (SE), Fleshgod Apocalypse (IT), Stream Of Passion (NL), The Agonist (CAN), The Ocean (D), Mayan (NL), Textures (NL), Myrath (TN), Evil Invaders (BE), For I Am King (NL) en Off The Cross (BE).

(Bron: Belga)

Salem, Portland based Progressive Metal band, Dusks Embrace have announced their fourth studio album ReAwakening, which is set to be released this Fall.
ReAwakening will be a milestone for the band in many ways. This record introduces a new vocalist, Aldo Arevalo, as well as a whole new sonic palette for the band. This record is the coalescence of years spent working on various metal, EDM, electronic and video game style music. The wide range of influences have led this record to be as much of a sonic journey as well as a musical one. Not content to follow in the trend of chugging metal, Dusks Embrace have worked to create a record that is strong in songwriting as well as sonic direction. The atmosphere of the synthesizers and catchy melodies along with a focus on songs over technicality will be a breath of fresh air in the sometimes stagnate world of progressive music.
Commented founder and guitarist Josh Brewer: "The creative process for ‘ReAwakening’ has been very different from previous Dusks records. In the past I have written the majority of the material but did almost all the finalizing and production myself. This time around was the first real collaborative effort. I still wrote all the standards for the material but as I put the band together we rehearsed and added parts. Having the input from the other guys as well as the new vocalist really helped push the material to be more of what I have always wanted."
He continues: "The biggest difference from our previous records is a lack of a clear sense of stylistic direction. This was the first record that really felt like what I wanted to do and not what fit in to a typical genre. We have always had moments of progressive tinged music but it was always sandwiched in with the more metal over tones. This record feels more like a constant flow and nothing seems forced into the record. It manages to cover a wide sonic and musical palette without sounding like a gimmick."
Dusks Embrace is a band that will soon define a movement. One that focuses on being able to write catchy, musically and sonically dense music that still plays on enough pop sensibilities to keep people coming back for more. The band is a shining example of the ability of independent artists in the modern age to push boundaries musically and independently release professional quality material.
Dusks Embrace’s fourth studio album ReAwakening is out this Fall. The exact date, as well as the album art and track listing will be revealed in the coming weeks. The band has previously released a lyric video for “Face Forward” taken from ReAwakening.

The man whose cool trumpet lines put his band Tijuana Brass on the map in the 1960s with a plethora of US pop hits ('Mexican Shuffle,' 'Whipped Cream,' and 'Spanish Flea' amongst them) is back with a new album. It's called 'Human Nature' and comes at a time when 81-year-old Herb Alpert's complete back catalogue is being revived (as previously reported on SJF). The title song is Alpert's spin on the popular Michael Jackson associated tune and also includes remakes of songs co-authored by Burt Bacharach. The set's first single, 'Doodles,' is a jaunty dance groove that recaptures the spirit of his old Tijuana Brass records.
The album is released on September 30th via the trumpeter's own label, Herb Alpert Presents.
Emboldened by her own recent diagnosis, the chanteuse aims to empower and educate others with “Find Your Wings,” set to take flight during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
SAN DIEGO (24 August 2016): It was against all odds that Anna Danes found herself standing in Capitol Records Studio A, in front of the same microphone used by her role models,Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, recording an a cappella song that she wrote for her sophomore album. In the dimly lit studio in the heart of Hollywood, the woman who escaped communist Poland as a child and overcame the pain and loneliness of a loveless marriage by discovering her voice just three years ago poured her broken heart into the intimate album closer, “I Love You,” as producer Dave Darling sat spellbound at the recording console. In the famed studio during sessions financed by selling a car, Danes shared her deeply personal tales of love and loss through the six acoustic jazz songs that she wrote for “Find Your Wings,” the DLG Records disc scheduled for release on October 14 that is completed by five standards and a stunning interpretation of blues singer Janiva Magness’ “When You Were My King.”
Late last month, as Danes plotted with her marketing and promotions team to gear up for the upcoming album release, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. True to the theme of “Find Your Wings,” the positive-minded vocalist faced her worst fears, saw the silver lining and penned a motivational blog, “Cancer Part 1: Vanity Saved My Life,” to help educate and encourage others facing their own health and personal challenges (http://www.annadanes.com/2016/07/31/cancer-part-1-vanity-saved-life/).
When Danes began the recording project that is slated to street during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she had the desire to emulate the sound of a pair of jazz vocal albums from the esteemed duo of Tony Bennett and Bill Evans. Darling kept Danes’ captivating and expressive voice front and center in the mix using only sparse accompaniment from pianist Rich Ruttenberg, drummer John Ferraro and bassist Trey Henry. Blessed with a classic voice possessing charm, warmth, elegance and grace, Danes’ patient delivery and vocal phrasing uncoils with poise and complete control despite the vulnerability and intensity of her emotion-charged subject matter. Love is her ever-present muse on “Find Your Wings.” On originals, she sings a haunting melody on “The Voice,” pines hopefully on “See You In L.A.” and longs to see forever in the eyes of her lover on “Long Distance.” Among those she interprets from the Great American Songbook are Michel Legrand’s “I Will Wait For You,” Sammy Cahn’s “It’s Crazy” and Johnny Mercer’s “I Want To Be Around” while on the romantic duet “That’s All,” she takes enduring vows with Richard Shelton’s debonair tenor.
“I’m a very late bloomer in life. For the majority of my life, I’ve either had little confidence or have drafted off other people’s confidence and floated under their wings,” said Danes, who wrote the title track with Cindy Alexander. “Cindy asked me what I wanted to write about. I told her about my story post-separation and how I found my voice and confidence through music. Bam! That’s all that was needed to start the creative process. What was supposed to be a song about finding hope, turned into an anthem about finding yourself, your true purpose, your voice, your identity and so much more.”
Finding her voice has been life transforming for the former lawyer and stay-at-home mom who has called San Diego home for the past 16 years. Danes hopes to empower people to pursue their passions and dreams with the songs on “Find Your Wings,” which will also be the subject of her first book, personal growth products and motivational speeches on the corporate circuit. Via music, writing and speaking, Danes’ encouraging message is that by facing your fears - in health and any personal challenge – you can break out of your cage, find your wings and transform your life.
Although she sang as a child in church after arriving in Sweden and settling in Canada after escaping Poland with her parents in 1979, Danes didn’t sing again until 2013 when her young daughter cried boredom and refused to participate at a vocal lesson. Since the lesson was already paid for, Danes stepped in. She released her debut album that same year, “Longing,” which was an extravagantly produced and elaborately-orchestrated collection of standards and modern pop tunes. Her love of jazz spawned the mission to bring more live jazz to the San Diego area through her own event production and promotion company, which produces the Jazz on Cedros series. After releasing the first part of their double album ‘Crescent Sun’, strongly adored indie-pop group, Jinja Safari, have now followed through with the other half in Part Two: Crescent Moon – the darker installment of the series and the final music to ever be released by the band.

The record features recently revealed taster track ‘So Much’ and eight brand new songs that were self-recorded and produced by both front men Pepa Knight and Marcus Azon at their home studios on the NSW Central Coast and in Hobart, Tasmania respectively.
Vocalist / guitarist Marcus Azon explains the theme behind Crescent Moon:
“We never planned on Jinja Safari being a band, but once it all happened and the momentum grew, we never expected that it could be over so quickly. There were a handful of contributing factors that were out of our control and sometimes you've just got to know when to admit that the old dog has had its time in the sun.
For me personally, Crescent Moon is the sort of album I've been wanting to make with Jinja for years. I think all of the boys would share this sentiment. I am more proud of the songs in this collection, than I have been of any previous Jinja release. I feel like it's probably more honest lyrically and melodically than our debut album.
Having complete autonomy to write and produce in the same way we worked in the beginning, made it a far simpler and more enjoyable process.
There is so much that I want to say, knowing that this will be our final press release, but the main thought I want to convey is the gratitude I have towards the fans and the slicks from the music industry that helped facilitate this 6yr trip. Could not think of a better way to spend the bulk of my 20s.
We would like to say thank you to Blake, Leon and Matt (our original managers), Josh, Mike and everyone else at Island/Universal, Artist Voice, APRA, Sounds Australia, Our sound guys Oscar, Clint, Jimmy, Karl and Brendan. Wonderlick, Rare Finds and also to the team at triple j who supported us.”
As both founding members met, wrote and recorded a lot of the twenty-one tracks from their final records at Crescent Head, they felt it was only fitting to name the album after the small beachside town.
Crescent Sun (Part One) and Crescent Moon (Part Two) are now available to purchase from iTunes, stream on Spotify and available from all other good digital retailers.

Fans of the soaring harmonies, charming personalities, and infectious songwriting of all-female “heartfelt country soul” trio Underhill Rose will enjoy a special treat this fall, as the group is recording a new album—with a twist. The set will be completely captured live at a pair of shows in their home state of North Carolina.
The appearances, Sept. 16 at Asheville’s Altamont Theater, and Sept. 17 at Lexington’s High Rock Outfitters, will offer a chance for the band’s friends and admirers to participate in the fun, and also enjoy alternative takes on favorite songs from the trio’s repertoire.
"We are so thrilled," notes guitarist Molly Rose Reed of the concept. "We picked Asheville and Lexington because we have some wonderful fans in those areas that we would like to be a part of this unique night.”
"The band can't wait to showcase the songs as we play them in a live setting,” she adds. “You will hear a more stripped-down versions of the songs than our studio albums, making way for the nuanced vocal harmonies."
The Asheville and Lexington live recordings will commence over an early (7 p.m.) and late (9:30) show, giving fans two chances to join in. The finalized album is expected to be released in 2017.
Underhill Rose wrapped up a busy summer of appearances including slots at the Red Ants Pants festival in White Sulphur Springs, Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour, and Folk Alliance International. Earlier this year, they completed their first-ever tour of the UK and Ireland, which was so successful they plan to return in November for more dates.
The band, composed of Molly Rose, bassist Salley Williamson, and Eleanor Underhill on banjo, has made a solid and uncompromising impact in what is a largely male-populated music front. Priding itself on producing a unique sound combining beauty with just a touch of darkness, the group formed in 2009 while Underhill and Rose were attending North Carolina’s Warren Wilson College.
After adding Williamson to the mix two years later, Underhill Rose launched two successful crowd-funding campaigns between 2012 and 2014, raising more than $50,000 to fund the independent release of their debut and sophomore albums.
Their second release, Something Real, peaked at number 18 on the AMA Chart, was named an AMA Top 100 Album of the Year, and claimed a spot in the top 25 of the EuroAmericana Chart, Freeform Americana Radio, and The Alternate Root “Roots 66” charts. Follow-up The Great Tomorrow, released in 2015, reached the Top 30 of the AMA Airplay Chart once again, and took hold at No. 1 on The Roots Music Report’s Progressive Bluegrass Album Chart for over nine weeks.

Margo Guryan - 29 Demos - Finally makes it’s way to vinyl.
At last, the follow up to Take A Picture. 29 fully-fleshed-out soft-pop masterpieces from Margo’s songwriting vault, available on vinyl for the first time ever.
In the 1960s, a decade where tragedy, beauty and societal change cascaded over a booming population of young adults, popular music was evolving in multiple directions. Blues-based rock, Brill Building pop, British Invasion madness, Motor City soul, funky southern syncopation, acid- laced psychedelia, and more all developed more or less concurrently. Indeed, music progressed at such a rapid pace that even a few weeks could reveal major changes. Assessing the music of this period requires an attention to detail and an appreciation of the artists who created pivotal moments in its evolution. That is to say, an artist like Margo Guryan.
Songwriter, singer, musician, and lyricist Guryan grew up in the NYC suburbs and was a musical prodigy. Signed as a writer to Atlantic Records at age 19, she immersed herself in the jazz world and attended the Lenox School of Jazz where she worked with Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, and studied with Bill Evans, Max Roach, Milt Jackson, and others. Meanwhile, her compositions were recorded by Harry Belafonte, Cass Elliot, Jackie DeShannon, and many more. Married to jazz trombonist and pianist Bob Brookmeyer, her course seemed set.
All of that changed when her friend, pianist-songwriter David Frishberg, raved about The Beach Boys’Pet Sounds album and especially the song “God Only Knows.” Guryan took his advice, gave it a spin, and it proved to be a life-changing event. “I thought it was just gorgeous,” she said. “I bought the record and played it a million times, then sat down and wrote 'Think of Rain.' That's really how I started writing that way. I just decided it was better than what was happening in jazz.” Along with “Think of Rain,” Guryan continued writing in this new pop direction, eventually landing a deal with Bell Records.
The resulting 1968 album, Take a Picture, was a sunshine pop masterpiece, full of inventive arrangements, lilting melodies and Guryan’s gossamer voice. Lauded by Billboard Magazine which predicted “strong sales,” marketing for the album was hampered by Guryan’s refusal to perform. Having seen the life of a musician up close through Brookmeyer's career, she wanted no part of it. Consequently, Bell Records withdrew promotion funds and let the album wither on the vine.
While that might be the end of most music careers, interest in Guryan’s music has grown steadily over the decades, largely due to Japanese record collectors. Take A Picture was first reissued in Japan, followed by Spain (for Europe) and the USA.
In 2001, a CD collection titled 25 Demos was released; a group of intricately-recorded songs featuring imaginative instrumentation. Now, for the first time on vinyl, Modern Harmonic gathers these songs and adds four tracks for 29 Demos. In stores on 8/26/16, 29 Demos is a double colored vinyl (one red, one blue) masterpiece and finally gives Guryan a proper follow-up to Take a Picture. This release is a must for any connoisseur of timeless melodies and offers insight into a time when pop music’s possibilities seemed endless. You’ll file this album alongside Brian Wilson, Claudine Longet, The Mamas and The Papas, Spanky and Our Gang, and The Left Banke. Eventually. When you can bring yourself to take it off the turntable.
The famed musician's home, set to be transformed into an educational center, will launch a crowdfunding campaign.
After lying vacant for years, the childhood home of groundbreaking jazz musician Miles Davis is being transformed into a museum dedicated to his life and work. Nonprofit group House of Miles East St. Louis (HOME) is currently raising money to finish rehabbing the dilapidated one-story structure at 1701 Kansas Ave., East St. Louis, Illinois where the world-renowned trumpeter spent his earliest years.
Interior demolition kicked off this month, with workers tearing out disintegrating walls and taking the home down to the studs. HOME has also organized a crowdfunding campaign seeking $50,000 to finish restoring the home to its 1920s heyday.
When finished later this year, the renovated space will display a collection of Davis-related artifacts, especially those relating to his life and influence on St. Louis. The building will also serve as a music education center for kids in the local school district, offering music lessons and classes on music history.
"We’re looking to give our kids a little sense of home. That’s why we called this place HOME, House of Miles East St. Louis," co-organizer Jasper Gery Pearson told the local public radio station. "So when you think of home you think not only about the front door and the back door but the whole community."

WISHIN’ AND HOPIN’ FOR A BEAUTIFUL HOME? DUSTY SPRINGFIELD’S FORMER SEVEN BEDROOM ART DECO MANSION HAS BEEN PUT ON THE MARKET FOR £16.5 MILLION
Singer Dusty Springfield lived in the stunning seven-bedroom west London home between 1968 and 1972.
The 7,200 sq/ft Art Deco property, which boasts a blue plaque, is now on the market for £16.5million.
The property boasts a leisure complex with a 35ft swimming pool, a separate gym, sauna, bar and hot tub.
The stunning Art Deco mansion where Dusty Springfield once lived has gone on the market for £16.5million.
The singer lived in the seven-bedroom property in Kensington, west London, between 1968 and 1972, at a time when she was one of the world's best known pop stars. She shared the home with her lover, Norma Tanega.
The 7,200 sq/ft property, which has a blue plaque commemorating Springfield's residency, has since been refurbished to the highest standard and oozes modern luxury.
It also boasts state-of-the-art Lutron lighting and underfloor heating.
The roof terrace offers stunning views over west London.
The 'beautifully refurbished' property is being sold by estate agent John Taylor. Managing director David Adams described it as 'what everyone in London desires'.
Mr Adams said: 'I am very happy to bring such a prestigious house to the market. It is an architectural one-off. It is a very unusual building. It was two homes, but it has been knocked into one so it is a large lateral space.
'The Art Deco architecture is of great interest, as it the provenance - it was lived in by Dusty Springfield and there is a blue plaque outside.'
There has already been significant interest in Dusty Springfield's old house, which costs 75 times the typical home in England and Wales.
Mr Adams added: 'Sales in the area are down 72 per cent on the same period in 2015, which was down 41 per cent on 2014.
'For it to be put up and get so many calls is quite unusual at the moment - it is getting attention and shows as long as you have the right features there will always be someone to snap it up.
'It has got fabulous views, there is a spa and the separation of the living areas which is great if you have teenage children.'
Dutch all-female Dutch Death Metal band Sisters Of Suffocation has come to an agreement with Hammerheart Records. Sisters Of Suffocation released its debut five-song CD-EP, "Brutal Queen", on April 22 2016 as a D.I.Y. release. The effort combines technical, old-school death metal with great hooklines, but also connects to the 2016 Death Metal scene.
Founded in 2014 in Eindhoven, Sisters Of Suffocation managed very quickly to establish an amazing live reputation and got lots of invitations from venues and smaller festivals. This was noticed by Eindhoven Metal Meeting, who gave them a chance to present themselves for a bigger audience.
It has always been a dream of vocalist Els Prins to start an all-female death metal band, but she didn't seem to be able find the right group of girls to make this dream reality — that is, until she met guitarist Simone van Straten. Sharing a love for extreme music, they recruited drummer Amber de Buijzer and bass player Puck Wildschut and started rehearsing.
Earlier this year, Sisters Of Suffocation finally went into the studio in Antwerp with Martin Furia to record "Brutal Queen", and the first D.I.Y. pressing is already sold out. Hammerheart Records will re-issue this EP on Digi-CD (September) and on LP (November), with spiced-up artwork.
The band is scheduled to perform as a support act for Legion Of The Damned this Autumn. Meanwhile Sisters Of Suffocation will work on their debut album, which is scheduled for release in the second half of 2017.
Sisters Of Suffocation is:
Vocals - Els Prins
Guitar - Simone van Straten
Drums - Amber de Buijzer
Bass - Puck Wildschut
Black Surf share fuzzed-up new track "Bastard Man" - Listen HERE
Debut EP "Let's Pretend It's Summer" out August 26"The band gleefully pound their way through the track with an enveloping and thick sound that would make Rivers Cuomo wet his pants."
Praise for Black Surf
"a fuzzed-up track that’s the perfect soundtrack to a lazy afternoon." - Upset
“Oooh Weee Oooh they sound just like something brilliant.” - Rock Sound
“waves of outwardly catchy choruses and sun blistered chords.” The 405
"a rabid burst of frenetic percussion and skewed guitars... play it again, and again, and again." - Gold Flake Paint
“Black Surf have a gift for thumping great melody that clearly threatens to propel them far beyond Yorkshire's shapely borders” Team Rock
“…imbued with a far, weary, Weezer-iness that we just can’t stop huffing.” Total Guitar
"The band gleefully pound their way through the track with an enveloping and thick sound that would make Rivers Cuomo wet his pants." - Overblown
Black Surf have an unusual backstory having formed in 2014 through the wonders of FaceTime and Dropbox. The fruits of their exchanges between Leeds, UK and Sydney, Australia have come to form their debut EP Let’s Pretend It’s Summer, recorded at Greenmount Studios (The Cribs, Pulled Apart By Horses, The Vaccines).
Black Surf specialise in the kind of fuzzed-up, adrenaline-shot indie-rock that’s straight to the point and doesn’t outstay its welcome. New track Bastard Man is no exception. Talking of the track, vocalist Ali Epstone said; "Bastard Man is loosely based on Larry David’s character in Curb Your Enthusiasm. I think maybe, we all have a bit of that sociopathic nature within us? I just love and envy to some degree, that people have no filter and say and do exactly as they please sometimes. For right or wrong, I respect that mentality in people even if I don't agree with the BS that comes out their mouth. I guess it’s the brutal honestly without any fear or care of consequence."
Long Live Black Surf.
