Othon is to digitally release his ‘Cobra Coral’ EP through Cherry Red Records. It features Marc Almond, Boss Axis, Charles Poulet and Bird Radio. Best known for his genre-transcending songwriting and his emotionally explosive compositions, award winning pianist Othon felt called “by the living consciousness of the Amazonian Ayahuasca brew to explore the depths and grooviness of electronic dance music” one recent Brazilian summer. His critically acclaimed, genre-transcending album ‘Pineal’, released in June 2014 through Cherry Red Records, was Othon’s first attempt to bridge the seemingly disparate worlds of his classically trained past and the rhythm-focused present and the ‘Cobra Coral’ EP takes his emotionally explosive composition from that album right into the hybrid universe of “shamanic dance music”.
The first track ‘Cobra Coral’ features Marc Almond moving vocals based on ‘Seu Tupinambá’, a slow melancholic Umbanda tribal hymn that blends indigenous beliefs with magic and spiritism. The hymn is sung in Ayahuasca ceremonies across Brazil and it was during one of these ceremonies that Othon decided to transform its infectious melody into a multi-percussive summer tune. Marc Almond shares Othon’s interest in the magico-religious practices of Central and South America and his passionate singing is certainly expressive of the Brazilian temperament. In the 11-minute long dynamic ‘Quantum Mix’, Othon’s unrestrained creativity really blooms; here his compositional past blends seamlessly with the electronic-focused present in a stellar collaboration with Charles Poulet, a ‘sound wizard’ of the underground club scene. His background is in working with Throbbing Gristle and Chris & Cosey and he’s also toured regularly with Factory Floor. In this mix, evocative flute lines performed by Bird Radio are reconstructed and layered to create a journey that builds up to an engulfing crescendo and a hallucinogenic wall of sound. The idea is to continuously raise the internal frequencies of the listener, bringing some of the ecstatic ceremonial vibrations both to the living room and the dance floor alike. The final track is the ‘Boss Axis Mix’ by German melodic techno champions Boss Axis. Deep, evocative and groovy, Boss Axis’ dub remix raises the temperature to hot completing Othon’s unique and visionary release. 1: Cobra Coral (Featuring Marc Almond) 2: Cobra Coral (Quantum Mix) 3: Cobra Coral (Boss Axis Mix) Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/cherryredrecords/sets/othon-cobra-coral-digital-ep/s-Ls2tu
