Belgian piano wizard Poltrock (Hooverphonic, Triggerfinger, Arid) presents his solo debut ‘Mutes’
David Poltrock – sidekick for premium Belgian bands such as Hooverphonic, Triggerfinger, De Mens and Arid – is finally hatching the music he’s been working on for half a decade.
As from 2013, he’s been intensively trying to get the most out of his impressive collection of analogue and modular synths and vintage keyboards piling up in his Brussels’ studio, creating an interesting backbone of clever and experimental electronic sketches.
In 2015, always pursuing interesting sounds, Poltrock discovered the endless sonic possibilities of the ‘prepared piano’ ; an unrivalled source of experimentation. He started treating the piano with duct tape, paper, felt, metal objects and basically anything ‘noisy’ he could get his hands on. These new and unfamiliar sounds, rhythms and drones offered a new source of inspiration, blending perfectly with the electronic sounds of the treasures in the studio.
2017. Poltrock bumps into his trusty childhood piano: an old and stubborn Steinway upright. Enchanted by the muted sound created by placing felt in between the hammers and the strings, he spent only three days improvising on what was to become the ‘Mutes’- series: short and intimate sketches, cutting right to the core.
MUTES, MOODS & MACHINES
This five-year-odyssey culminates with the 2018 release of the trilogy ‘Mutes, Moods & Machines’ by Dutch boutique label Excelsior Recordings. Three full albums, released with a pianesque 88-day interval, all highlighting a different approach to the 88 piano keys. Three distinctly versatile albums displaying a genuine affection for keyboard instruments of character – and the prepared piano more specifically. All compositions share melodic and harmonic purity: beauty in all its simplicity.
Mutes (29 March 2018 – International Piano Day) is a collection of short and intimate piano improvisations.
Moods (June 2018) is a series of atmospheric and cinematographic soundscapes blending natural and prepared pianos with menacing drones and dense sound textures.
Machines (September 2018) is a selection of instrumentals combining heavily prepared and repetitive piano patterns with hypnotizing electronica
In March 2017 Poltrock is debuting with a piano-prologue to the five sold out shows for Hooverphonic at the ‘Queen Elisabeth Hall’ (Antwerp). In December 2017 Poltrock opens for the three sold out Triggerfinger shows at the ‘De Melkweg’ (Amsterdam) with an intense electronic set and releases a limited edition 7” vinyl remix for Triggerfinger’s ‘Colossus’. https://soundcloud.com/poltrock/colossus-triggerfinger-remix
