The DNA of Purple Rain can be felt throughout pop culture at large. It is a timeless body of work with an immortal resonance exemplified by smashes such as “Let’s Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry,” “Darling Nikki,” the title track “Purple Rain” and more. 1984’s Purple Rain remains a high watermark for Prince, changing the worlds of film and music. In its initial run, the theatrical musical generated over $220 million worldwide at the box office against an estimated $7.2 million budget, while receiving the Academy Award® for “Best Original Song Score.” Minted Diamond by the RIAA for sales exceeding 13 million, the record stands out as the sixth best-selling soundtrack album in history, moving more than 22 million copies. Hailed by Vanity Fair as “the best soundtrack of all time,” Time Magazine placed it as the 15th greatest album ever. The album won two 1985 GRAMMY Awards® in the categories of “Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” and “Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special.” Posthumously, it was honored as “Favorite Soundtrack” at the 2016 American Music Awards. It was also recently nominated for a 2017 Billboard Music Award in the category of “Top Soundtrack/Cast Album.”

Prince's ex-wife has shared a loving tribute written to mark the one-year anniversary of the superstar's death, insisting his legacy has ensured he will "always be with us".
Mayte Garcia, who was married to the Purple Rain hitmaker for four years until 2000, has been open about the heartache she has suffered since his untimely passing on 21 April, 2016, and she recently sat down to pour out her feelings about her ex in a touching message for fans, which she describes as a "love letter to his legacy".
In the lengthy note, published on Billboard.com, the dancer recalls how she met and fell in love with Prince, and explains how the 57-year-old used his songwriting talents on the track Comeback to work through the tragedy of losing their baby son, Amiir, who died just a week after his October, 1996 birth, due to rare congenital defect Pfeiffer syndrome.
"Writing the song allowed him to grieve about Amiir in a way that was difficult for him to do in person, even with me, his wife," she wrote. "But music was his refuge. It's what he knew how to do - what he had to do - as an artist. And people loved him for it."
Mayte goes on to heap praise on the music icon's devotees, who Prince referred to as his "fam", short for family, explaining, "They were much more to him than simply 'fans' or 'admirers'. I believe they always felt that.
"And they returned that love right back, tenfold. Prince was beloved and revered in a way that few artists ever have been or likely ever will be. Online communities dedicated to his music and to his art are thriving. He was selling out shows and touring relentlessly up until his last days."
She reveals she decided to pen the open letter to "leave an impression of light and of love, which is what he was".
Mayte continues, "Prince was many things: an artist, an amazing friend, the love of my life and family. I wanted to write a love letter to his legacy. Mystery is often cloaked in darkness. I wanted to share the light."
Concluding the note, Mayte admits she takes comfort in knowing that although Prince himself is no longer alive, his contributions to the world of entertainment will never be forgotten.
"None of us can stay in this world forever, but in his music and his singular art, Prince has left a legacy that will live on for centuries to come," she adds. "In this way, he will always be with us."
Police officers searching Prince's home after his death found a huge stash of narcotic medications, according to newly released search warrants.
Court documents released by Minnesota authorities on Monday (17Apr17) show that the police officers who responded to the scene after the singer's death at his Paisley Park mansion on 21 April last year (16) found "numerous" pills in his bedroom and other areas of his home.
However, the medications were not prescribed to the musician under his own name.
One search warrant document reads, "During the search warrant of Prince's home, detectives located numerous narcotic controlled substance pills in various containers and areas of Prince's bedroom, some of which were in a suitcase with the nametag of 'Peter Bravestrong'."
Inside the suitcase were several bottles with prescriptions in the name of Kirk Johnson, Prince's bodyguard.
The court papers state that officers believe 'Peter Bravestrong' to be an alias of Prince, and also found papers with the lyrics to his 1987 track U Got The Look in the suitcase.
The official cause of the 57-year-old's death was an overdose of the opioid Fentanyl.
The search warrants also indicate that investigators believe the music superstar had a history of going through withdrawal symptoms as a result of prescription medication abuse.
Other information included in the documents indicates that cops learned from Prince's associates that he never used a mobile phone and preferred to communicate via email.
No one has yet been arrested in connection with Prince's death.
Prince's life will be celebrated at his Paisley Park home and recording studio complex in Minnesota on the first anniversary of his death in April (17).
Family and friends are planning a four-day festival at the compound.
Celebration 2017, which will begin on 20 April (17), will feature performances from Prince's bands The Revolution and 3rdEyeGirl, and longtime pal and Purple Rain co-star Morris Day.
More acts will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan headlined the first official Prince tribute concert following the singer's death at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, last month (Oct16).
Chaka was one of the first acts to take to the stage, and delighted the audience as she brought Stevie out to duet with her on I Feel For You - the Prince song that was a hit for Chaka back in 1984.
The couple also performed one of Prince's most beloved songs, 1999.
Tori Kelly, Doug E. Fresh and Jessie J were among the other musical stars at the concert, which opened with a taped message from President Barack Obama.
Several of Prince's family and friends were present for the musical celebration, including his younger sister Tyka Nelson, ex-wife Mayte Garcia and close pals Morris Day & The Time, Judith Hill and Liv Warfield.
Meanwhile, Prince's former backing band The Revolution reunited for the first time in five years for an emotional show at the Minnesota club featured in Purple Rain in September (16).
Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Matt Fink and their bandmates took the stage at First Avenue in Minneapolis to pay tribute to their late leader. Wendy led the group as it belted out a string of Prince hits, including Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, and 1999.
Prince died from an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen in April (16). He was 57.
(Bron: Belga)
Prince's family have reportedly held a private service to remember the iconic musician.
A cousin of the Purple Rain hitmaker told Billboard.com family members and close friends gathered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday (12Aug16) to bid a fond farewell to their loved one and remember his life.
Prince died on 21 April at his Paisley Park estate of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 57.
Charles 'Chazz' Smith told local news channel KARE-TV that Friday's service was held at a Minneapolis church, and another is planned for Saturday (13Aug16) at Paisley Park.
He opened up during the short interview, revealing the late musician's family have been finding it hard over the last few months, and they're trying hard to preserve Prince's image.
Talking about his death from a Fentanyl overdose, Smith said he hoped it would help others struggling with a painkiller addiction to seek help.
The service on Friday comes after the administrator of Prince's estate was granted permission to sell a number of the late star's real estate. The Kiss hitmaker did not leave a will when he died, and the administrator at Bremer Trust recently asked a judge to put various properties on the market.
The Paisley Park compound, which also includes a recording studio and featured in the 1984 movie Purple Rain, will not be part of the sale, but other properties near his hometown of Chanhassen are.
A court filing had reportedly included a list of nearly 20 places which could be sold, and on 11 July (16), Judge Kevin Eide allowed the administrator to list six properties this month (Aug16).
However, they will have to seek another affidavit before they can put the other buildings on the market, according to Access Hollywood. (Bron: Music-News)
Prince has been given his own day in Minnesota to mark what would have been his 58th birthday.
State Governor Mark Dayton has declared Tuesday (07Jun16) will be 'Prince Day' in Minnesota.
The local hero died from an accidental overdose of the narcotic painkiller Fentanyl on 21 April (16), and fans have been in mourning ever since, but now there's a big celebration planned.
Issuing his proclamation on Monday (06Jun16), Governor Dayton urged Minnesotans to wear something purple to honour the Purple Rain singer.
Prince's birthday will also be marked at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, with a Let's Go Crazy dance party. The pop superstar was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.
Meanwhile, animal rights activists at People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) plan to celebrate Prince's birthday by re-releasing the song he gifted them in 1999.
Fans will be able to download his pro-vegan tune Animal Kingdom, which Prince recorded to celebrate the organisation's 20th anniversary, for free on Tuesday.
The song includes the lyrics, "We're all members of the animal kingdom. Leave your brothers and sisters in the sea."
Prince's ex-wife Mayte Garcia has teamed up with PETA to encourage fans to celebrate his birthday by going vegan for the day "to see how much better they feel and to honour his kind legacy."
As fans plan to celebrate the Kiss star's birthday, two new potential Prince heirs have stepped forward.
One, Norman Yates Carthens, claims he can prove the singer adopted him, and insists there is a will that leaves a substantial part of the late star's estate to him.
Carthens alleges Prince left him $7 million (GBP4.8 million).
Prince's sister Tyka and their half-siblings maintain there is no will.
Another new potential heir, a half-sibling named Regina Sorenson, has filed documents insisting she and Prince share the same father.
(Bron: Belga)
NEWS / As the days after Prince’s untimely death march on, the world gets a better glimpse at what could have happened during his final days.
Several reports say he nearly overdosed on the painkiller Percocet six days before his death when his private jet had to make an emergency landing in Illinois following an Atlanta concert. It’s reported that the singer took the drug to ease his chronic hip pain following hip surgery six years ago. EMT’s administered the “save shot” to the singer, and allegedly, they left the hospital only three hours after arriving, ignoring doctor’s orders to stay 24-hours when his crew’s requests to get a private room wasn’t granted. He was found unresponsive in his Paisley Park home on Thursday, April 21st.
Now, the Associated Press and Us Weekly are reporting that his body has already been cremated and a small, intimate memorial service took place at his compound earlier today (April 23). Purple flower arrangements and catered food was seen being delivered to the late singer’s home before friends and family were seen arriving later on. Friends such as percussionist Sheila E. and bassist Larry Graham were among those seen entering his home for the ceremony.
The singer’s rep told Us Weekly in a statement: “A few hours ago, Prince was celebrated by a small group of his most beloved: family, friends and his musicians, in a private, beautiful ceremony to say a loving goodbye,” “Prince’s remains have been cremated and their final storage will remain private. We ask for your blessings and prayers of comfort for his family and close friends at this time. The cause of death remains unknown and it will be at least four weeks before we receive the results of the autopsy. An announcement will be made at a future date for a musical celebration.”
An autopsy was performed on Friday (April 22), and the results are expected to be released in a few weeks.
NEWS / Prince is dood.
"It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisele Park residence this morning at the age of 57," schreef zijn P.R.-dame Yvette Nole-Schure gisteravond in een statement. (Bron: DeMorgen)
NEWS / A nasty case of the flu prompted Prince to make an emergency landing in Illinois on Friday morning (15Apr16).
The superstar was heading home from a show in Atlanta, Georgia when he was taken ill and he instructed the pilot of his private jet to touch down and get him to the hospital.
The plane landed at Quad City International Airport in Moline just after 1am local time, and Prince was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance, where he was treated and released hours later.
A representative for the Purple Rain singer has assured fans the 57-year-old is feeling much better and is now resting at home.
A source tells TMZ the singer has been fighting the flu for several weeks and cancelled two shows on 7 April (16).
He fell ill just before taking the stage in Atlanta on Thursday night (14Apr16), but insisted on continuing with the performance. Singers Janelle Monae and Judith Hill were in the audience cheering Prince on as he performed while sick as a dog at the Fox Theatre. And according to Janelle, Prince did nothing but impress in spite of his ailment.
"Prince. In Atlanta. At the FOX Theatre. With just a piano. Greatest ever. RE inspired all over again," she wrote on her Twitter page.
Prince was flattered by all the admiration he received for the show, writing on his own Twitter account: " I am still floating on a cloud of purple intoxication after last night's Piano & A Microphone show in Atlanta." (Bron: Music-News)
NEWS / Enigmatic multi-platinum recording icon Prince has announced a GALA EVENT set for January 21st at his historic Paisley Park recording complex in Chanhassen, MN.
The exclusive performance will feature the celebrated composer, performer and multi-instrumentalist in an especially intimate setting – solo with merely a piano and a microphone. The format will allow fans to experience a more direct one-to-one connection with Prince.
The minimalist concept was originally planned to debut at Konzerthaus in Vienna, Austria late last year, however dates were postponed following sky-rocketing resell prices on secondary ticketing outlets even prior to the official on-sale date. In a stance against ticket-touts, the icon inverted and reimagined the concept, announcing plans for an exclusive residency at his very own Paisley Park.
Tickets to this upcoming event will offer Prince fans globally an opportunity to join in the experience by purchasing tickets ahead of time at paisleyparkafterdark.com.
Ticket onsale is set for today at 12PM PST. VIP tickets will be sold first.
For those lucky enough to attend, everything about these exclusive solo performances has been carefully considered to deliver special once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The repertoire list will be culled from Prince's vast 39-album catalogue and each performance will have a unique set-list that evolves in real time song-to-song. Fans should expect to witness special interpretations of well-known hits, alongside rarely performed B-sides and new never-before-heard material.
In speaking about why he has decided to undertake the minimalist solo concept, Prince has stated: "For several reasons. For starters it is a challenge. You have to try new things. With the piano it is more naked, more pure. You can see exactly what you get". Indeed, these intimate solo concerts will stand in sharp contrast to the critically acclaimed and incendiary HITNRUN performances Prince delivered with funk-rock band 3RDEYEGIRL through recent years. Befitting to the concept of seeing Prince perform solo at a piano, careful consideration has been given to the environment and the acoustics at Paisley Park to ensure an entirely unique, intimate and special concert experience.
Prince has sold in excess of 100 million records worldwide. In addition to collecting seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Purple Rain, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 - the first year of his eligibility.
The icon has remained as prolific as ever, having released four albums in the last sixteen months, the chart-topping ART OFFICIAL AGE (#1 R&B), PLECTRUMELECTRUM (#1 Rock) and most recently HITnRUN Phase One, released initially in exclusive partnership with TIDAL on September 7, 2015, and HITnRUN Phase Two, released in partnership with TIDAL on December 12th, 2015.
In Parijs waren in december twee concerten gepland in Opera Garnier.
(Bron: DeMorgen)
(Bron: DeMorgen)
