 The first film documentary based on the life of Indianapolis music icon Wes Montgomery is scheduled to premiere in March 2023 and coincide with the 100th anniversary of the jazz guitarist’s birth.
Kevin Finch, a former TV news executive who worked at WTHR-13, WISH-8 and WRTV-6, is making the film with significant contributions from Robert Montgomery, the guitarist’s youngest son. Robert, who was 6 years old when Wes died after suffering a heart attack in 1968, is sharing 14 reels of 8mm home movies for the film, which has a working title of “Wes Bound.” Finch’s company, Jukeboxer Productions, recently announced the documentary will premiere on Bloomington-based public television station WTIU. Born March 6, 1923, in Indianapolis, Wes Montgomery transformed jazz guitar thanks to a fingerpicking style initially embraced by the genre’s purists and later by the masses. The two-time Grammy Award winner influenced the work of George Benson, Jimi Hendrix and Pat Metheny. The documentary is expected to include new interviews with Benson, fellow guitarist Lee Ritenour (who recorded a 1993 tribute album titled “Wes Bound”) and other musicians. To depict Montgomery’s life and times, Finch will make use of the previously unseen home movies. “My dad filmed everything,” Robert said. “Wherever he went, he filmed.” During digital transfers, the silent 8mm films have yielded images from a European tour and performances in Seattle and Minneapolis. In November 2019, IndyStar visited a transfer session overseen by documentary co-producer Jim Hall, film specialist Roger Lippincott and Robert Montgomery in rural Madison County. One reel revealed Montgomery’s performance at the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival, family members gathered at the guitarist’s home near Butler University’s campus and scenes from a church picnic at an amusement park in Lafayette.

Sources say it was from COVID-19. The Rude Boys were best known for the 90s hit “Written All Over Your Face.” The Rude Boys first joined together in Cleveland, Ohio with members Banks, Larry “Bingo” Marcus (d. 2016), Joe Little III, Dwight Thompson and Melvin Sephus, and were discovered by Gerald Levert. Signed by Atlantic Records, the group released the debut album, Rude Awakenings, which yielded a #1 R&B hit with its second single, “Written All Over Your Face,” featuring Gerald Levert singing lead. As if to prove that they were not a “one hit wonder,” the Boys followed with another #1 hit, the wonderful ballad “Are You Lonely For Me,” and continued their hot streak with a major international tour supporting Levert and The O’Jays. An important footnote is that, at this time, the group's keyboardist and musical director was future soul music star Frank McComb. The Rude Boys issued a follow up album, 1992’s Rude House (which included the moderate hit “My Kinda Girl”), but it didn’t hit the heights of its predecessor album, and their stint with Atlantic Records was done. It led to a split of the group, though some of the members reunited five years later for the commercially unsuccessful album Rude As Ever. Following Gerald Levert’s tragic death, the Rude Boys reunited to perform at the funeral. Banks was a talented keyboardist and worked on Gerald and Eddie Levert’s hig Father and Son album, and later produced the act Men at Large. Buddy Banks' time in the spotlight was brief, but folks will be listening to his powerful music for decades to come. Rest in peace.  Pioneering country singer Charley Pride, who paved the way for Black artists in America’s historically exclusionary country-music institutions, is dead at 86 due to complications from the coronavirus. According to a statement from his team, Pride passed away in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday, December 12. Just last month, on November 11, Pride gave his final performance at the 2020 Country Music Awards in Nashville, which were controversially held indoors despite the ongoing pandemic. At the ceremony, Pride performed his 1971 hit “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” and was honored with the CMAs’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
Pride was born in 1934 to sharecroppers in Sledge, Mississippi, and played minor league and Negro American League pro baseball throughout the 1950s before signing with RCA and transitioning to a career in music in the 1960s. Over the course of two decades, Pride had 52 Billboard Top 10 country hits, 30 of which hit number one on the charts, and earned four Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Pride remains one of only three Black artists, along with DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker, to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. He is survived by his siblings; his wife of over 60 years, Rozene Cohran; and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Today Alice Cooper releases the second single from his upcoming new studio album “Detroit Stories,” which will be released on February 26th 2021 on earMUSIC. But is that really what the lyrics are telling us about? And it was so strange, because it was happy and what it was saying was anything but happy – it was simply a great juxtaposition. And I got it immediately and said “okay, this is going to be great”. The music saying one thing and the lyrics saying something else, I love that song. He collapsed at the home in Waukegan where he lived with his wife, Deborah, whom he’d married three months ago, Orman Weiss said. He was 56. Orman Weiss said the cause was unknown. An autopsy is pending. Mr. Morganfield, who leaves behind seven children, grew up in Westmont with his famous father and his stepmother, Marva. “My father would’ve found so much joy in what Joseph has accomplished. Joseph was living his best life when he passed away. Few people leave this Earth doing what they were meant to be doing. The family is deeply, deeply brokenhearted,” said Mercy Morganfield, Mr. Morganfield’s sister, and executor of the Muddy Waters estate. He was looking forward to publicizing his new Delmark single “It’s Good to Be King” and to a new full-length CD that was being produced by Grammy winner Michael Freeman, Orman Weiss said. “He was so joyful,” she said. In a Sun-Times story published earlier this week, Morganfield said he planned to complete the album next year with his band, the Mannish Boyz.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the festive anthem (December 9), an official video has been released by Rhino Entertainment. The video was animated by Fantoons and drawn by famed cartoonist Lonnie Milsap. In the clip, Hathaway takes a stroll through Chicago’s streets, passing by people in the community who are in the Christmas spirit. He arrives at his evening concert and performs the iconic song. ATLANTA (9 December 2020): For the second consecutive year, soul-jazz flutist Ragan Whiteside is Billboard’s top female smooth jazz songs artist of the year. In the male-dominated genre in which only three females made it into the year-end top 10, Whiteside, powered by singles from her aptly titled new EP, “Five Up Top,” came in at No. 5 for 2020. Last year, the Atlanta-based musician-songwriter checked in at No. 3. “I am incredibly thankful to be included. I hope it helps open doors for other female artists. I'm always grateful for any success, but this year even more so since the world was turned upside down. Everything was ten times harder, but we managed to pull through,” said Whiteside, who has a string of six consecutive Billboard top 10 singles. On Billboard’s year-end chart, Whiteside single, “JJ’s Strut,” paraded into the No. 35 position. The joyous number inspired by her daughter’s moxie peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard singles chart and went No. 1 on the MediaBase chart. Whiteside is the only female to appear in Billboard’s year-end top 10 songs, which she did in a guest starring role on emerging trumpeter Willie Bradley’s “It’s On Now,” the No. 3 song for 2020. The innovative composer, poet, and pianist famously developed the “soft pedal” style of playing piano and is most known for his work with artists like Guthrie and Brian Eno of Roxy Music.
The native Angeleno was born on May 24, 1936 and spent the first half of his life in academia, receiving a graduate degree from the University of Southern California before joining the military as a drummer and then venturing into a career as a professor. By the mid-1970s, Budd had found a new calling as a musician and an unparalleled songwriter, combining jazz and new age music with his minimalist approach to compose memorable tracks both with artists as well as for feature films and television shows, such as HBO’s I Know This Much is True. Budd’s manager, Steve Takaki, told Rolling Stone that the veteran composer unexpectedly passed away due to complications from COVID-19. Budd and Guthrie released their most recent album, Another Flower, just last week. Guthrie took to his personal Facebook to share the news of Budd’s passing, along with the official message from the Cocteau Twins page. Dik vijftig jaar muziekgeschiedenis in één leven. Hè hè, wat een lol! Jan is een overlever van de eerste generatie Vlaamse kleinkunstreuzen, naast zijn vriend (zaliger) Zjef, naast Willem, naast Kris. Moeiteloos zal hij het eeuwige leven behouden, dankzij liedjes die tot onze culturele ziel behoren: ‘Joke’, ‘Een vrolijk lentelied’, ‘Eerste sneeuw’, ‘De fanfare van honger en dorst’ … Als geen ander beheerst Jan de kunst om met tijd en traagheid om te gaan. Tussen 1970 en ‘74 maakte hij drie platen. Hij nestelde zich in de cocon van het ontwakende Vlaanderen en speelde jaar in jaar uit op parochiepodia van verenigingen en jeugd/studentenclubs die de opborrelende kleinkunst koesterden. Radio en televisie boden een zuinig platform voor die vreemde muzikale snuiters die tegen het gangbare conservatisme voelden dat de wereld veranderde. Bob Dylan, Georges Brassens …. de nieuwe helden waren nooit ver weg. Parels van Jan In de jaren 80 werd het stiller. De radio volgde de smaak van de jeugd die viel voor pop en rock, en voor megafestivals. De Belpop beleefde hoogdagen. Voor een zanger met gitaar was geen plaats in de herberg. Maar toegevingen wou Jan niet doen, ook al kreeg het etiket kleinkunst een wrange smaak. Tot platenfirma EMI grootse plannen ontvouwde. Jan trok grote ogen maar stapte mee in het verhaal. ‘Hè Hè’ zou en moest een topplaat worden. De grote namen suisden om de oren: Hennie Vrienten, Fay Lovski, Harry Sacksioni, Boudewijn De Groot, Wigbert Van Lierde, Joost Belifante … Maar voor het belangrijkste ingrediënt zorgde Jan De Wilde zelf: parels van liedjes. Uit eigen hand en uit de pen van Gentenaar Lieven Tavernier. In het najaar 1990 veroverde ‘Hè Hè’ de harten van Vlaanderen. Het album - met de iconische hoes en het ‘zelfportretuiltje’ - luidde een succesperiode in met veel optredens en nieuwe kansen. De plaat haalde goud, Jan schreef de muziek voor de Urbanusfilm Hector, ging op tour met het klassieke orkest Prima La Musica en met een eigen band rond Jean Blaute. Zes klassiekers Tot de storm ging liggen en De Wilde zich terugtrok in het geborgene in Aaigem. Op de radio stopte de aandacht voor ‘Hè Hè’ nooit. De plaat bleek een instant-knaller, een blijver, een uitzonderlijk werkstuk dat een grote plek verdient in de Vlaamse muziekgeschiedenis. Zes van de twaalf liederen dragen de stempel ‘klassieker’: ‘Hè Hè’ zelf, ‘De fanfare van honger en dorst’, ‘Eerste sneeuw’, ‘Walter, ballade van een goudvis’ en de Randy Newman-vertaling ‘Naakte Man’. En ‘Een vrolijk lentelied’ (origineel uit 1972) natuurlijk. Dat heeft inmiddels de status van een traditional en wordt in vele talen nagezongen. Geen dag gaat voorbij of Radio 1 of Radio 2 zet een van de songs op hun playlist, zelfs in 2020. Het album fungeerde ook als passe-partout voor zowel zijn vroeger werk (‘Joke’, ‘Anneke Weemaes’, ‘Rolstoel’) als zijn latere kunstjes (‘Wakker naast jou’ ,‘Hare Krishna Halleluja’). Stuk voor stuk juweeltjes die hij gretig opneemt in zijn live-set. Dag meneer De Wilde De laatste jaren leeft Jan De Wilde in een roes. In oktober 2014 porde de Brussels AB de bard uit Aaigem aan om zijn ‘Hè Hè’-album als Rewind-concert te spelen. Een uitverkochte zaal was zijn deel. In de zomer van 2015 verscheen zijn biografie én een driedubbele cd-box onder de titel ‘Dag meneer De Wilde'. Het was de start van een ‘never ending tour’ die Jan en zijn bende muzikanten in de mooiste theaters van Vlaanderen bracht. Met als toetjes: twee maal Boterhammen in het Park, Festival Dranouter, Gentse Feesten en een tussendoortje voor de Gestelde Lichamen op 11 juli 2017 in het stadhuis van Brussel. Wie had dat gedacht? De jaren lijken geen vat te hebben op Zijne Aaigemse Hoogheid. Op 1 januari 2019 vierde muzikaal Vlaanderen op sprekende wijze zijn 75ste verjaardag: met een warme TV-documentaire, met tonnen respect en met een nieuwe concertreeks. Eindigt het ooit? Zeker is dat Jan De Wilde dankbaar is voor wat hij mag doen, en het beste kan. Hij bouwde zijn leven op liedjes schrijven en zingen. Meer dan platen maken is live spelen zijn lange leven. Hij doet het dolgraag. Eigenwijs, witgallig, zilvergrijs, onnavolgbaar grappig maar bovenal muzikaal ijzersterk. Voor Jan De Wilde begon het dus niet met het album ‘Hè Hè’, maar het eindigde er ook niet mee. Integendeel. De plaat bleek de dieselmotor voor zijn lange carrière.   Nebula' is de vooruitgeschoven single van het album 'Identified Flying Object' dat in januari verschijnt via W.E.R.F. Records. Het gaat erg snel voor de jonge Belgisch-Japanse pianist/componist Alex Koo, die momenteel hoge toppen scheert als opkomend toptalent in binnen- en buitenland. Onlangs werd zijn CD ‘Appleblueseagreen‘, met Amerikaanse grootheden Ralph Alessi en Mark Turner, bejubeld door het wereldbefaamde Downbeat Jazz Magazine en verkozen in hun lijst van ‘Best Albums of 2019‘, met 4 sterren en de woorden ”Stunningly original“. Vooral de klik met ECM-icoon Alessi was zo bijzonder (Downbeat: ‘the monster trumpeter who hails from a separate world altogether’) dat een verdere samenwerking tussen de twee onvermijdelijk was. Identified Flying Object werd geboren als duo met jong stokkengeweld Attila Gyárfas, dé drummer bij uitstek van de bruisende jazz- en impro-scène van Boedapest. Nu presenteert het gezelschap als herboren trio met Ralph Alessi hun nieuwe album ‘Identified Flying Object’ op W.E.R.F. Records. Hun muziek, een mix van lyrische composities en improvisaties die op de grens liggen tussen filmmuziek, minimalisme en soundscaping, kan je het best beschrijven als een trip door de ruimte. Make A Fire  De organisatoren van W-festival hebben beslist om het festival in augustus 2021 te laten plaatsvinden op het strand van Oostende. Dat meldden de organisatoren gisteren. Het festival met jaren '80-muziek ging oorspronkelijk door in augustus 2020 in Waregem maar werd door corona afgelast. Wie al tickets had voor W-fest, kan dat ticket gratis omzetten.
Na een geschrapte editie van 2020, gaat W-festival in de zomer van 2021 door op het strand van Oostende. De festivalsite 'Klein Strand' zal het decor vormen van het vierdaagse festival. Met de verhuis naar Oostende wilden de organisatoren meer ruimte creëren zodat het festival op een coronaproof manier kan worden georganiseerd. "We verwachten dat er komende zomer nog enkele maatregelen zullen gelden dus daar wilden we ons op voorbereiden. Een belangrijke factor daarin is voldoende spreiding en ruimte en daar is het strand van Oostende ideaal voor", zegt organisator Erik De Ridder. Welke maatregelen er precies zullen gelden voor de festivalzomer is nog onduidelijk. Voor de organisatoren is het dan ook nog even afwachten. "We wapenen ons tegen verschillende scenario's. Indien nodig geven we mensen de mogelijkheid om zich aan de ingang te laten testen of kunnen ze een attest van een negatieve test voorleggen. Daarvoor is het nog even afwachten op hoe de situatie dan zal zijn", aldus De Ridder. Voor het festival kon de volledige, oorspronkelijke line-up worden overgezet naar 2021, met uitzondering van Kid Creole. De vervanger daarvan wordt in januari aangekondigd en gekozen door luisteraars van radiozender Joe FM. Daarnaast werd als afsluiter van het festival 'The Jacksons' toegevoegd aan de line-up. W-festival gaat door op het Klein Strand van Oostende van 26 tot 29 augustus. Wie al een ticket had, kan dat ticket gratis laten omzetten op de website van W-festival. Vanaf maandagmiddag start de voorverkoop van nieuwe tickets. De organisatoren verwachten een maximum van 12.000 festivalgangers per dag.  Bob Dylan’s back catalogue of songs has been snapped by Universal Music in a deal thought to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
No financial details were revealed but Universal said the agreement covered more than 600 songs including all of Dylan’s hits such as (Blowin’ In The Wind’, ‘The Times They Are a-Changin’’, ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ and ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door’. His songs have been covered more than 6000 times by artists as diverse as Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Guns N’ Roses, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, Adele and U2. One of the icons of the sixties, Dylan has sold more than 125mln records and was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2016, the first time a songwriter has received the accolade. Jody Gerson, Universal Music Publishing’s chief executive, said: “To represent the body of work of one of the greatest songwriters of all time - whose cultural importance can’t be overstated - is both a privilege and a responsibility.“ Back catalogues have become an increasingly valuable commodity as streaming services have proliferated and become the primary access to music for many people. Dylan remains extremely popular as a download artist even though he first emerged in the early sixties in Greenwich Village in New York. Now aged 79, he continues to play over 100 concerts each year and released his latest album Rough and Rowdy Ways earlier in 2020 where it reached Number 1 in the UK and Germany and number 2 in the US. Er is een bijzonder krachtige dynamiek ontstaan tussen de vele vrijwilligers. Om deze bijzondere kracht en de betekenis van het vrijwilligerswerk in beeld te brengen, kregen zij de hoofdrol in de videoclip voor “The Unsung” van de Gentse muzikant Guy Verlinde. Deze nieuwe song is een eerbetoon aan alle onbezongen helden. De videoclip en de song worden op 5 december gereleased op de internationale dag van de vrijwilliger. The Unsung wordt tevens het campagne lied voor De Armste Week. Voor heel wat mensen zal de week voor Kerstmis niet de warmste maar wel de armste week zijn. Nu corona het deze kerstperiode nog eens moeilijker maakt voor de mensen die het al niet breed hadden, wil het Gents Solidariteitsfonds een wel heel speciale inzameling organiseren. Internationale dag van de Vrijwilliger Op 5 december is het de Internationale dag van de Vrijwilliger. Vrijwilligers maken meer dan ooit het verschil. Dat werd nog maar eens duidelijk tijdens deze coronacrisis, waar tot op vandaag een heleboel organisaties en individuen op vrijwillige basis, de professionele diensten hulpverlening bijstaan en/of draaiende houden. Gents Solidariteitsfonds De vrijwilligers van het Gents Solidariteitsfonds nemen het op voor de erg kwetsbare groepen, want die worden eerst en het hardst geraakt. Zij die zich niet goed kunnen beschermen zijn extra kwetsbaar. Deze vrijwilligers zitten in de frontlinie van wat er zich aan de onderkant van de samenleving afspeelt en vaak verborgen blijft. The Unsung Gentse singer-songwriter Guy Verlinde en het Gents Solidariteitsfonds willen deze vrijwilligers bedanken, door hen een prominente rol te geven in de videoclip voor “The Unsung”. Dit is een song over “the unsung heroes” in ons leven, over hen die belangeloos een deel van hun tijd, energie en leven opofferen voor anderen. En zo zijn er veel meer dan we kunnen beseffen. Hij heeft het niet enkel over het georganiseerde vrijwilligerswerk, maar ook over familie, buren, vrienden, … Over zij die er keer op keer staan, wanneer we ze nodig hebben. Zij die ons door moeilijke momenten loodsen, zij die het warme deken zijn en licht brengen wanneer het kil en donker is. Blues Peer, de Ancienne Belgique, De Roma, OLT Rivierenhof … waar hij de affiche deelde met grootheden als: B.B. Dit is een album waar fans al jaren om schreeuwen. Seasick Steve vindt dat 'Blues in Mono’ enkele van zijn beste uitvoeringen geeft om een fris, uitgekleed bluesalbum af te leveren dat het perfecte tegengif biedt voor de moeilijke tijden waarin we leven. Steve heeft een selectie van nummers samengesteld om te coveren, van zijn favoriete artiesten zoals Willie Dixon, Lightnin ’Hopkins, Charlie Patton en Mississippi Fred McDowell. Het album bevat ook vier nieuwe Seasick Steve-nummers, waaronder de hoofdtrack ‘Well, Well, Well’. Steve merkte op: "Ik en een akoestische gitaar, die oude countryblues speelt. Ik heb het altijd al willen doen, maar ik heb me nooit waardig gevoeld, maar toen besefte ik dat ik maar beter kon opschieten en het zou doen want ik zal me nooit waardig voelen! Ik heb geprobeerd het zo te maken dat als je luisterde, je zou denken dat ik bij je in je huis zat.
Seasick Steve staat te popelen om weer op pad te gaan en zijn plannen voor 2021 krijgen al vorm. Op 7 december 2020 verschijnt het inmiddels 9e full-album van Philippe Robrecht, getiteld “2020”. Na een periode van 10 jaar zonder nieuw werk, is er nu dus “2020”, een album met 11 nieuwe én 11 herwerkte oude bekende songs. Het verhaal is herkenbaar: Hopen op betere tijden, aanvaarden van nieuwe tijden en zoals steeds … het verlangen naar het land aan de horizon. Na een levenslange band met Ierland ging Philippe in 2017 wonen op Inishbofin, een eilandje aan de Ierse Westkust. Het is dan ook niet te verbazen dat het album muzikaal gekruid wordt door niet alleen Belgische, maar ook Ierse topmuzikanten. Het nieuwe album zal (onder voorbehoud cfr Covid) ism Nekka live in première gaan in Antwerpen op zaterdag 6 februari 2021.  |
