Eind tachtiger jaren besloten Paul Deakin, Robert Reynolds en Raul Malo, drie schoolvrienden, om de band The Mavericks op te richten. In 1990 kregen ze een contract bij MCA Records in Nashville en hun tweede album ‘What A Crying Shame’, dat in Amerika meer dan een miljoen keer over de toonbank ging,  zette The Mavericks op de muzikale landkaart. Voor hun album ‘Music For All Occasions’ behaalden ze, naast een Grammy Award, goud en zilver. Zichzelf nogmaals overtreffen deed de band met hun, in 1998 uitgebracht vijfde studioalbum ‘Trampoline’. Een album dat vooral in Europa uiterst hoge ogen gooide. Het geluid van The Mavericks is dan ook zonder meer uniek. Je hoort er zowel The Travelling Wilburys, Los Lobos als Chris Isaak in terug.
Het is dan ook lovenswaardig dat het Duitse Bear Family Records ‘Trampoline’ voor de eerste maal uitbrengt in een luxe uitgave met 2 LP’s van 180 gram. Bovendien is deze uitgave wereldwijd gelimiteerd op 1500 exemplaren, bevat ze 17 tracks met een speelduur van ongeveer 69 minuten. En het bijzonderste moet nog komen….. Niet alleen krijg je het oorspronkelijke album op vinyl, maar deze uitgave bevat tevens vier bonustracks, die enkel maar op de in Japan uitgebrachte cd te vinden waren. ‘Trampoline’ is muzikaal gezien tevens het meest gevarieerde en zelfs artistiek het hoogwaardigste album van de band. Het leverde de band ook hun mega hit ‘Dance The Night Away’ op, dat het tot de vierde plaats schopte in de Britse popcharts. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat het aantal Europese fans van de band een enorm explosie kende.
Vanaf de eerste track ‘Dance The Night Away’ valt de supergoede geluidskwaliteit van deze vinyluitgave op, die merkbaar beter is dan de cd. Spil van de band is de uitermate getalenteerde songschrijver en charismatische zanger, de in Cuba geboren Raul Malo, die vocaal zonder meer tot de categorie van Roy Orbison mag gerekend worden. Pluspunt is ook de originele stijl van The Mavericks. Met hun mix van country, Tex-Mex, gospel, Western swing en rock-‘n-roll waren zij destijds niet alleen grondleggers van de Americana stijl, maar blijven hun songs ook vandaag nog steeds heerlijk klinken. ‘Kwaliteit drijft steeds boven’ is een statement dat op ‘Trampoline’ zeker van toepassing is. Het is verbijsterend hoe goed Malo en zijn medestanders diverse muziekgenres weten te combineren, zowel in uptempo als in ballades. Van dit laatste zijn ‘Fool #1’ en ‘Dream River’ knappe staaltjes. Daarnaast is de band ook sterk in een instrumentale track, zoals in het heerlijke ‘Melbourne Mambo’. Gospelinvloeden komen dan weer aan de oppervlakte in ‘Save A Prayer’.
De vier bonustracks die enkel op de in Japan uitgebrachte cd terecht kwamen, kan je beluisteren op de vierde kant van deze dubbel lp. ‘All I Get’, een compositie van Nick Lowe en Raul Malo, is een emotionele song die je meteen bij je nekvel grijpt. De volgende bonustrack is de ‘traditional’, het in Spaans uitgevoerde, feestelijk uitbundige ‘La Mucara’, dat gevolgd wordt door het uptempo ‘She Does’. Afgesloten wordt er met het instrumentale ‘Panatella’, dat nogmaals het muzikale vakmanschap van The Mavericks in de spots plaatst.
Moest je de kans hebben om een concert van The Mavericks te bezoeken, zeker doen, want ze zijn nog steeds actief en hun sound staat nog steeds op een eenzaam hoog niveau.
Bear Family Records mag terecht meerdere pluimen op hun hoed steken voor deze sublieme uitgave van het legendarische ‘Trampoline’ album dat, we kunnen het niet vaak genoeg zeggen, in een hemelse geluidskwaliteit baadt. Liefhebbers van speciale edities, wees er wel vlug bij, want deze uitgave is wereldwijd beperkt tot 1500 exemplaren. Het zou zonde zijn moest je deze vinylheruitgave aan je neus zien voorbijgaan.

In the late eighties, Paul Deakin, Robert Reynolds and Raul Malo, three school friends, decided to form the band The Mavericks. In 1990, they got a contract with MCA Records in Nashville and their second album ‘What A Crying Shame’, which sold more than a million copies in America, put The Mavericks on the musical map. For their album ‘Music For All Occasions’, they won a Grammy Award, gold and silver. The band surpassed themselves once again with their fifth studio album ‘Trampoline’, released in 1998. An album that was particularly well received in Europe. The sound of The Mavericks is therefore without a doubt unique. You can hear The Travelling Wilburys, Los Lobos and Chris Isaak in it. It is therefore fantastic that the German Bear Family Records is releasing ‘Trampoline’ for the first time in a deluxe edition with 2 180 gram LPs. Furthermore, this edition is limited to 1500 copies worldwide, contains 17 tracks with a playing time of approximately 69 minutes. And the most special is yet to come… Not only do you get the original album on vinyl, but this edition also contains four bonus tracks, which were only found on the CD released in Japan. ‘Trampoline’ is also the most varied and even artistically the highest quality album of the band. It also gave the band their mega hit ‘Dance The Night Away’, which made it to number four in the British pop charts. It is therefore not surprising that the number of European fans of the band experienced a huge explosion.
From the first track ‘Dance The Night Away’ the super good sound quality of this vinyl edition is noticeable, which is more better than the CD. The frontman of the band is the extremely talented songwriter and charismatic singer, the Cuban-born Raul Malo, who vocally can certainly be counted in the category of Roy Orbison. Another plus is the original style of The Mavericks. With their mix of country, Tex-Mex, gospel, Western swing and rock-‘n-roll, they were not only founders of the Americana style at the time, but their songs still sound wonderful today. ‘Quality always comes first’ is a statement that certainly applies to ‘Trampoline’. It is astonishing how well Malo and his fellow supporters manage to combine various music genres, both in uptempo and in ballads. Of the latter, ‘Fool #1’ and ‘Dream River’ are great examples. In addition, the band is also strong in an instrumental track, such as in the wonderful ‘Melbourne Mambo’. Gospel influences come to the surface in ‘Save A Prayer’. The four bonus tracks that only ended up on the CD released in Japan can be heard on the fourth side of this double LP. ‘All I Get’, a composition by Nick Lowe and Raul Malo, is an emotional song that immediately grabs you by the scruff of the neck. The next bonus track is the traditional, the festively exuberant ‘La Mucara’ performed in Spanish, which is followed by the uptempo ‘She Does’. It ends with the instrumental ‘Panatella’, which once again puts the musical craftsmanship of The Mavericks in the spotlight.
If you have the chance to attend a concert of The Mavericks, definitely do so, because they are still active and their sound is still at a lonely high level.
Bear Family Records can rightly put several feathers in their cap for this sublime edition of the legendary ‘Trampoline’ album that, we cannot say it often enough, bathes in a heavenly sound quality. Lovers of special editions, be quick, because this edition is limited to 1500 copies worldwide. It would be a shame if you missed out on this vinyl reissue.
