Cherry Casino and The Gamblers

In 2014 verrasten de Duitse Cherry Casino and The Gamblers de liefhebbers van rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly met hun album ‘Hi-No-Love’. Dat de heren nog steeds meetellen in de rockende en rollende wereld bewijzen ze met ‘The Automatic Fool’, hun vierde album.
Het album telt 11 originele nummers, allen van de hand van Axel Praefcke, aka Cherry Casino. Op dit album laat Cherry Casino zich omringen door saxofonist Ike Stoye, gitarist Michael ‘Humpty’ Kirscht, drummer Gregor Gast en Kevin Weber op de staande bas. Co-producer was de getalenteerde Duitse rockabillygitarist Randy Richter, die jammer genoeg op 23 september 2025 overleed.
Wat bovendien dit album enorm interessant maakt, is het feit dat de opnames gebeurden in de Lightning Recording Studio in Berlijn met het gebruik van originele vintage opnameapparatuur, waardoor het album onmiskenbaar in de ‘real fifties sound’ baadt.
Dat wordt al meteen duidelijk in opener ‘Sugar Sweet Baby’. Een uitermate heerlijke sound, die je al vlug doet vermoeden dat Cherry en zijn kompanen bij jou in de huiskamer een privé concert geven. De smooth klinkende gitaar, de handclaps, de backing vocals, de klokvaste ritmesectie en Cherry’s knappe zang, zorgen dat je dadelijk in de rockende mood verkeert. In de titeltrack ‘The Automatic Fool’ zorgt de sax dan weer voor een pakkende ‘early sixties’ sound. Die sax is trouwens een enorm pluspunt door het hele album. Rock-‘n-roll met een swingende touch presenteert de band in ‘Shake Me Up Baby’. Dat swingend gevoel typeert ook opener van de B zijde, ‘This Is My Dance’. De A kant wordt rockend afgesloten met ‘Street Party’, inclusief een fraaie gitaarsolo. Diversiteit is een geen vreemd begrip voor Cherry Casino and The Gamblers. Zo heeft ‘Easy Baby’ ook een onderliggende smooth jazzy feel, die nog versterkt wordt door de deels gesproken passage. Een flinke dosis jump kenmerkt daarna de enige cover, het door Elvis bekend gemaakte ‘It Ain’t No Big Thing (But It’s Growing)’. ‘Baby Malonka’ is dan weer een slow met een poppy inslag. Fel rockend sluit het vijftal af met ‘You Tell Me’.
Naast de uitermate getalenteerde muzikale prestaties, de prima originele nummers en de authentieke fifties arrangementen, is de sound die hier verkregen wordt van een duizelingwekkende hoogstaand kwaliteit. Op de valreep van 2025 brengen Cherry Casino and The Gamblers met ‘The Automatic Fool’ en knaller van een album uit.

In 2014, the German band Cherry Casino and The Gamblers surprised rock 'n' roll and rockabilly fans with their album ‘Hi-No-Love’. They prove they're still a force to be reckoned with with ‘The Automatic Fool’, their fourth album.
The album features 11 original songs, all written by Axel Praefcke, aka Cherry Casino. On this album, Cherry Casino is surrounded by saxophonist Ike Stoye, guitarist Michael ‘Humpty’ Kirscht, drummer Gregor Gast, and Kevin Weber on upright bass. Co-producer was the talented German rockabilly guitarist Randy Richter, who sadly passed away on September 23, 2025.
What also makes this album so compelling is that it was recorded at Lightning Recording Studio in Berlin using original vintage recording equipment, giving the album an unmistakably real fifties sound. This is immediately apparent in the opener, ‘Sugar Sweet Baby’. An utterly delightful sound that quickly makes you think Cherry and his band are giving a private concert in your living room. The smooth guitar, the handclaps, the backing vocals, the steady rhythm section, and Cherry's beautiful vocals immediately put you in a rocking mood. In the title track, ‘The Automatic Fool’, the sax provides a catchy, early sixties sound. That sax, by the way, is a huge asset throughout the album. The band presents rock 'n' roll with a swinging touch in ‘Shake Me Up Baby’. That swinging feel also characterizes the B-side opener, ‘This Is My Dance’. The A-side concludes with a rocking ‘Street Party’, complete with a beautiful guitar solo. Diversity is no stranger to Cherry Casino and The Gamblers. ‘Easy Baby’, for example, has an underlying smooth jazzy feel, further enhanced by the partially spoken passage. A generous dose of jump then characterizes the only cover, the Elvis-made-famous ‘It Ain't No Big Thing (But It's Growing)’. ‘Baby Malonka’ is a slow track with a poppy edge. The quintet closes with a fierce rocking performance of ‘You Tell Me’.
Besides the exceptionally talented musicianship, the excellent original songs, and the authentic fifties arrangements, the sound achieved here is of a staggeringly high quality. Just before 2025 ends, Cherry Casino and The Gamblers release a awesome album with ‘The Automatic Fool’.
