Tijd voor een bekentenis: uw reporter had een enorme crush op Hilary Duff in 2003, toen ik 17 was en zij 15. Ik vond haar fris, vrolijk, spits en mooi. Ik heb haar film 'Agent Cody Banks' in de bioscoop bekeken, en ik vond het zelfs een goede prent! Ik zou nu krampachtige vergezochte excuses kunnen verzinnen ("Ja, ik was jong en ik had nog geen smaak"), maar dat is behoorlijk overbodig. Akkoord, Hilary Duff was een gefrabiceerd Disney-product, maar ze kon tenminste echt zingen en acteren. Er zijn meer beschamende kalverliefdes om te koesteren als tiener. Ik zal haar altijd verdedigen. Ook vandaag is mevrouw Duff - ondertussen getrouwd, gescheiden én moeder van een kind - nog steeds een mooie vrouw (getuige de cover van deze nieuwe plaat). Ze heeft alleszins de valkuilen van vele uitgedoofde kindsterretjes kunnen vermijden. En zo ligt album nummer vijf ligt blinkend op me te wachten. 'Breathe In. Breathe Out'.
De plaat begint met vrolijk Bobbejaan Schoepen-achtig gefluit. Op een Hilary Duff-plaat? Origineel, en gedurfd. 'Sparks' evolueert verder richting een brave uptempo ballade die door het gefluit ook van Flo Rida zou kunnen zijn. Ook 'Picture This' bevat gezellig gefluit. De vrolijke invloed van haar eerstgeborene? Wie zal het zeggen. Hilary Duff zelf, wellicht, wanneer Keys & Chords haar mag interviewen. Some day. Tekstueel is het allemaal vrij braafjes. Vermoedelijk staan er daarom géén lyrics in het boekje, want alles kunnen ontleden zou teveel banaliteit verraden. Met frases als 'You're taking me high', 'I'm done with your lies', 'You're every missing piece' (etc.) is Jim Steinman veraf. Daarentegen is 'beaches where the sand has turned to glass' dan weer wél een mooi beeld. Het titelnummer 'Breathe In Breathe Out' begint als iets dat van Jan Hammer had kunnen zijn. Goede undercurrent beat, maar daarna glijdt het toch weer af naar generische ballade-territorium. Wél leuk dat de tekst 'X marks the spot' bevat. Een vrijblijvende 'Indiana Jones' en 'The Goonies'-associatie die mijn duimpje omhoog krijgt. Meer filmknipogen in 'Brave Heart', dat begint met tikkende 'Back to the Future'-klokken. 'One In A Million' is een zeer, zeer aanstekelijk nummer. Het afsluitende duet met Kendall Schmidt, 'Night Like This', is ook prima - omdat de tweede stem van Schmidt zo mooi klinkt. Een goed voorbeeld van 'saved the best for last'. Teveel nummers zijn overgoten met een dance light-sausje, en dat is jammer. Ik begrijp dat mevrouw Duff ondertussen 28, auteur en moeder is, en dat ze dus niet zomaar 'Why Not?!' of 'So Yesterday' kan blijven zingen, maar toch mis ik een beetje de vrolijke spring-in-'t-veld van de zoutloze Disneyfilms uit het begin van de eeuw. Toen was ze gekneed en weinig persoonlijk, zeker. Disneypopprinsesjes worden elke 2-3 jaar vernieuwd, zoals een fabrikant een nieuwe automodel maakt. En als dit album haar artistiek statement anno 2015 is, dan moet ik dat zeker waarderen. Het mag alleen nog ietsje meer zijn. Met de hakken over de sloot. Terugkomen in september. Toch loont het de moeite om het album een kans te geven, want bepaalde tracks zijn heerlijk.

Personal confession: yours truly used to have an enormous crush on Hilary Duff in the year 2003, when I was a wee lad of 17 and she was a 15-year old starlet. I found her to be charming, dainty, and beautiful. I caught 'Agent Cody Bank' on the silver screen, and I even liked the film! I could try and come up with an excellent excuse ("I was young and I lacked good taste"), but why bother? Granted, Hilary Duff was a prefab Disney product, but she could really sing and act. There are far worse examples of puppy love to harbour. I'll always defend her. Today, miss Duff - a married, and subsequently divorced mother - is an attractive woman still (just look at this new record's cover art for proof). She did avoid the pitfalls of burnt-out child stars. And thus we have album the fifth, called 'Breathe In. Breathe Out'. Okay then.
The album starts with a cheerful Bobbejaan Schoepen (the  late Belgian Johnny Cash and theme park phenomenon)-esque whistle. Whistling? Original, and bold. 'Sparks' further evolves into an uptempo ballad, and the continued whistling would not be out of place on a Flo Rida single. 'Picture This' contains happy whistling too. Is it the influence of her child? Who knows? Hilary Duff herself, probably, and I'll be sure to ask her once Keys and Chords secures an interview. Some day. One can dream. There are no textual surprises, and phrases like 'You're taking me high', 'I'm done with your lies', 'You're every missing piece' (etc.) could even be considered stale and clichéd. 'Beaches where the sand has turned to glass', however, is one charming lyric. The title track begins with Jan Hammer influences, and contains a nice undercurrent beat. Beyond that, it sadly slides off into generic ballad territory. The text does contain 'X marks the spot', which is a welcome and thumbs up-worthy 'Indiana Jones' or 'Goonies' reference. More iconic film nods in 'Brave Heart', which starts with ticking 'Back to the Future' clocks. 'One In A Million' is a very, very good song, one of the album's highlights. The final track, a duet between Duff and Kendall Schmidt, is gorgeous too. Schmidt's voice is ever so lovely. Saved the best for last, as it were.
Generally speaking, too many songs bathe in a 'dance light' sauce, which is unfortunate. I understand that miss Duff has reached the ripe age of 28, and she can't sing 'So Yesterday' or 'Why Not?!' forever, but I do miss the happy-go-lucky Disney teenager of yesteryear. Could be nostalgia speaking, for yes, I too have become an old jaded fart. Do give the album a chance, because there are diamonds, pearls and nuggets of brilliance amongst the crappier offerings. And her voice is as strong as ever.
