​James Cotton werd geboren in 1935 en overleed in 2017 op 81 jarige leeftijd. Cotton was zeker één van de meest getalenteerde en baanbrekende mondharmonicaspelers. James groeide samen met de bluesgiganten van zijn tijd op. Dat waren zangers, gitaristen, pianisten en saxofonisten. Sonny Boy Williamson leerde hem de basistechnieken op de bluesharp, maar de saxspelers zouden zijn spel definitief vorm geven. Cotton modelleerde namelijk zijn manier van spelen naar de saxpartijen  in de rhythm & blues en jazz. Bovendien waren het de jaren die vooraf gingen aan de geboorte van de rock-‘n-roll. Vanzelfsprekend omarmde hij naast de blues het opkomende nieuwe muziekgenre, zoals op deze compilatie blijkt.
Het album bevat 27 tracks, allen opgenomen tussen 1953 en 1968, waaronder 4 van zijn allereerste opnamesessie, 9 songs samen met de Muddy Waters Band, waar hij lange tijd deel van uitmaakte, 2 tracks van zeldzame Britse ep’s met Chris Barber en Alexis Korner en 12 opnames met Cotton als bandleider, waarvan 1 Verve opname voor de eerste maal hier op cd. Daarnaast hoor je creatieve en innovatieve muzikanten als Pat Hare, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon, Paul Butterfield, Fred Below en Otis Clay. Je mag dus wel stellen dat James Cotton tot de top van de Chicago bluesmuzikanten behoorde. Naast zijn lidmaatschap bij de Muddy Waters Bluesband, richtte James midden jaren zestig, zijn eigen band op, waarmee hij op ook op menig Europees bluesfestival optrad en bleef opnemen.
Scoren doet James Cotton al vrijwel onmiddellijk met het van Jackie Brenston afkomstige ‘Rocket 88’, hier in een superieure rhythm & bluesversie. Niet te verwonderen, want naast Cotton op vocals en harp, hoor je Otis Spann aan de piano, James ‘Pee Wee’ Madison op de gitaar en de drumvellen worden beroert door S.P. Leary. Het volgende nummer is meteen een Cotton compositie, namelijk het overbekende ‘Hold Me In Your Arms, dat hij in 1954 voor Sun inblikte. Trouwens klassiekers zijn er bij de vleet op deze compilatie. Zo tref je o.a. ‘Don’t Start Me Talkin’’ van zijn eerste solo lp hier aan, net als trouwens het vaak gecoverde ‘Feelin’ Good’. Een eerste slowblues komt er met ‘Cotton Crop Blues’, nummer dat in een remake ook dit album sluit, waarna Muddy Waters voor de eerste maal aan bod komt in ‘She’s Got It’, onmiddellijk gevolgd door ‘Rock Me (All Night Long)’. Later is Muddy nog van de partij in ‘You Don’t Have To Go’ dat Muddy en James samen schreven, ‘Short Dress Woman’, ‘I Won’t Go On’ met waarschijnlijk Fred Below aan de drums, ‘Meanest Woman’, ‘Elevate Me Mama’, ‘I Feel So Good’ en ‘My Dog Can’t Bark’.
Een prachtig staaltje van James’ vakmanschap op de Mississippi saxofoon laat hij horen op het instrumentale ‘Off The Wall’, een compositie van Little Walter Jacobs. Ook in Engeland nam James in 1961 het toffe instrumentale ‘Jimmy’s Jump’ op met pianist Keith Scott, Alexis Korner op gitaar en bassist Chris Barber. Formidabel is zeker de ‘harmonica blowout’ op ‘Three Harp Boogie’, waar naast Cotton, Billy Boy Arnold en Paul Butterfield de harpers van dienst zijn. Nota bene, de gitarist is de eveneens bekende Elvin Bishop.
Met ‘Lovin’ Cup’ eert James een compositie van Paul Butterfield. Nummer waarin ook gitarist Luther Tucker op zijn best is.
Of je nu Cotton hoort als begeleider in de Muddy Waters Band of op zijn soloprojecten, telkens hoor je een harper op topniveau, die onder eigen naam bovendien ook vocaal overtuigt.
‘James Cotton Rocks’ is een formidabele compilatie met opnames van een terechte Grammy Award winnaar.

James Cotton was born in 1935 and died in 2017 at the age of 81. Cotton was certainly one of the most talented and groundbreaking harmonica players. James grew up with the blues giants of his time. They were singers, guitarists, pianists and saxophonists. Sonny Boy Williamson taught him the basic techniques on the blues harp, but the sax players would definitively shape his playing. Cotton modeled his way of playing after the sax parts in rhythm & blues and jazz. Moreover, these were the years that preceded the birth of rock 'n' roll. Naturally, in addition to the blues, he embraced the emerging new music genre, as is evident on this compilation. The album contains 27 tracks, all recorded between 1953 and 1968, including 4 from his very first recording session, 9 songs with the Muddy Waters Band, of which he was a member for a time, 2 tracks from rare British EPs with Chris Barber and Alexis Korner and 12 recordings with Cotton as bandleader, of which 1 Verve recording for the first time here on CD. In addition, you hear creative and innovative musicians such as Pat Hare, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon, Paul Butterfield, Fred Below and Otis Clay. So you can say that James Cotton belonged to the top of the Chicago blues musicians. In addition to his membership of the Muddy Waters Bluesband, James founded his own band in the mid-sixties, with which he also performed at many European blues festivals and continued to record.
James Cotton scores almost immediately with the Jackie Brenston-originated ‘Rocket 88’, here in a superior rhythm & blues version. No wonder, because besides Cotton on vocals and harp, you hear Otis Spann on the piano, James ‘Pee Wee’ Madison on the guitar and the drum skins are played by S.P. Leary. The next number is immediately a Cotton composition, namely the well-known ‘Hold Me In Your Arms’, which he recorded for Sun in 1954. Incidentally, there are classics in abundance on this compilation. For example, you will find ‘Don’t Start Me Talkin’’ from his first solo LP here, as well as the often covered ‘Feelin’ Good’. A first slow blues comes with ‘Cotton Crop Blues’, a number that also closes this album in a remake, after which Muddy Waters is featured for the first time in ‘She’s Got It’, immediately followed by ‘Rock Me (All Night Long)’. Later, Muddy is also present in ‘You Don’t Have To Go’, which Muddy and James wrote together, ‘Short Dress Woman’, ‘I Won’t Go On’, probably with Fred Below on drums, ‘Meanest Woman’, ‘Elevate Me Mama’, ‘I Feel So Good’ and ‘My Dog Can’t Bark’.
A beautiful example of James’ craftsmanship on the Mississippi saxophone is heard on the instrumental ‘Off The Wall’, a composition by Little Walter Jacobs. James also recorded the cool instrumental ‘Jimmy’s Jump’ in England in 1961 with pianist Keith Scott, Alexis Korner on guitar and bassist Chris Barber. The ‘harmonica blowout’ on ‘Three Harp Boogie’ is certainly formidable, where the harpists are on duty alongside Cotton, Billy Boy Arnold and Paul Butterfield. Note that the guitarist is the equally well-known Elvin Bishop.
With ‘Lovin’ Cup’, James honours a composition by Paul Butterfield. Number in which guitarist Luther Tucker is also at his best.
Whether you hear Cotton as an accompanist in the Muddy Waters Band or on his solo projects, you always hear a harper at the top level, who also convinces vocally under his own name.
‘James Cotton Rocks’ is a formidable compilation with recordings of a rightful Grammy Award winner.
