Lang vooraleer Motown Records Detroit op de muzikale wereldkaart zette, was Fortune Records hét label dat de rauwe rockabilly en wilde rock-‘n-roll uit Detroit op plaat vastlegde. Van eind jaren ’40 tot half jaren ’60 produceerde Fortune Records songs, die gekenmerkt werden door een opvallende directheid en een enorme rauwheid. De opnames werden niet opgepoetst en zowel country, rockabilly, rock-‘n-roll als rhythm & blues werden met die ingesteldheid aan het vinyl toevertrouwd. Het resultaat is dat deze opnames ook vandaag nog, door hun directheid en energie, niets aan overtuigingskracht hebben ingeboet.
Fortune lanceerde een indrukwekkende reeks artiesten, waaronder de York Brothers, Johnny Powers, Pete DeBree, Roy Hall en Andre "Bacon Fat" Williams.
De opnames van zowel Fortune Records als de sublabels Hi-Q en Strate 8, die je op deze cd aantreft, werden opgenomen met een vaste huisband, waarvan de muzikanten nogal eens wisselden. Eén van de belangrijkste muzikanten was gitarist Eddie Jackson, mede verantwoordelijk voor de typische Fortune sound.  Deze compilatie bevat tevens enorme zeldzame songs, waaronder ‘Blues I Can’t Hide’ van Eddie Jackson, de enige release op zijn Caravan label.
De cd start onmiddellijk met een klassieker, namelijk het in 1958 opgenomen ‘Rock The Universe’ van Dell Vaughn & The Fortune Aires. Nummer dat meteen de energieke en rauwe sound van Fortune flink in de verf zet. Vanaf dan is meteen de toon gezet voor 28 vurige rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly, zowel vocaal als instrumentaal. Energieke songs gebracht door wild om zich heen schoppende artiesten, begeleid door strakke bands met knappe bijdragen op de lead gitaar en sax.
Kenny Land & His Bull Dogs nemen in ‘Columbus Stockade Blues’ eventjes wat gas terug. Niet voor lang echter want met het instrumentale ‘The Roll’ van Butch Vaden & The Nite Sounds zitten we terug op topsnelheid. Let vooral op die alles verscheurende sax. Die sax staat ook op het voorplan in het eveneens instrumentale ‘Long Walk’ van The Catalinas. Subliem! Gitaar en sax vullen mekaar dan weer prima aan in een andere knappe instrumental, namelijk ‘J & D Hop’ van Jim Myers & The Regan with The Gems. Een pure gitaar instrumental komt er met Ellis Kirk & The Town And Country Boys in ‘Flamingo Rock’. Gitaar met een ietwat Oosterse inslag maakt later furore in het tevens instrumentale ‘Fling’ van The Phaetons.
De reden waarom Eddie Jackson tot de belangrijkste muzikanten behoorde bij Fortune, hoor je in het eerder reeds genoemde ‘Blues I Can’t Hide’, een pracht van een op blues gefundeerd nummer. Een klasbak van een song is het rauw gebrachte ‘Gonna Get Me A Satellite’ van Little Ernest Tucker & The Ted Walker Orchestra, met wederom een heerlijke saxpartij. Inspirerend gitaarwerk zet ‘Hamtramck Mama’ van The York Brothers op de rails. Nummer dat subtiel sporen van hillbilly bevat.
Voor een leuke pianoboogie skip je best naar het met fiddle versierde ‘Dirty Boogie’ van Roy Hall & His Cohutta Mountain Boys. Een portie rockende rhythm & blues krijg je op je bord met ‘Try Me One More Time’ van Nolan Strong & The Diablos, inclusief leuke backing vocals.
Elvis sprak niet alleen tot de verbeelding, maar was ook inspiratiebron voor nummers. Een eerste song krijg je met ‘Elvis Is Rocking Again’ van The Hunt Sisters & Mark with Roy Hall & His Boys. Nummer waarin The Hunt Sisters hun beste beentje voorzetten met een adembenemende samenzang. Het tweede nummer is ‘Hey Mr. Presley’ van Pete De Bree & The Wanderers, met zang van Jimmy Franklin.
Flarden gospel sieren dan weer ‘No Grave’ van The Whirl Wind Evangelists.
Traditiegetrouw krijg je ook nu weer een schitterend uitgevoerd 36 pagina’s full- color booklet, boordevol zeldzame foto's, illustraties en een uitgebreide labelgeschiedenis, alsook info over de tracks en de artiesten.
Volume 55 in de ‘That’ll Flat… Git It!’ is andermaal een hoogvlieger. Hou je van het rauwe en energieke aspect die de opnames van Fortune Records kenmerkten, wel dan is er goed nieuws. Bear Family Records werkt momenteel aan een tweede volume rond de rauwe rockabilly en wilde rock-‘n-roll van dit Detroits label.

Long before Motown Records put Detroit on the musical world map, Fortune Records was the label that captured the raw rockabilly and wild rock 'n' roll from Detroit on record. From the late 1940s to the mid-1960s, Fortune Records produced songs characterized by striking directness and immense rawness. The recordings were not polished, and country, rockabilly, rock 'n' roll, and rhythm & blues were committed to vinyl with that mindset. As a result, these recordings have lost none of their persuasive power today, thanks to their directness and energy.
Fortune launched an impressive array of artists, including the York Brothers, Johnny Powers, Pete DeBree, Roy Hall, and Andre "Bacon Fat" Williams.
The recordings from both Fortune Records and the sub-labels Hi-Q and Strate 8, which you will find on this CD, were recorded with a fixed house band, whose musicians changed quite frequently. One of the most important musicians was guitarist Eddie Jackson, partly responsible for the typical Fortune sound. This compilation also contains incredibly rare songs, including ‘Blues I Can’t Hide’ by Eddie Jackson, the only release on his Caravan label.

From then on, the tone is set for 28 fiery rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly, both vocal and instrumental. Energetic songs performed by wildly lashing-out artists, accompanied by tight bands with skillful contributions on lead guitar and sax.
Kenny Land & His Bull Dogs take things down a notch in ‘Columbus Stockade Blues’. Not for long, however, as we are back at top speed with the instrumental ‘The Roll’ by Butch Vaden & The Nite Sounds. Pay special attention to that tearing sax. The saxophone also takes center stage in the equally instrumental ‘Long Walk’ by The Catalinas. Sublime! Guitar and saxophone complement each other perfectly in another fine instrumental, namely ‘J & D Hop’ by Jim Myers & The Regan with The Gems. A pure guitar instrumental appears with Ellis Kirk & The Town And Country Boys in ‘Flamingo Rock’. Guitar with a somewhat Eastern slant later makes a splash in the equally instrumental ‘Fling’ by The Phaetons.
The reason why Eddie Jackson was one of the most important musicians at Fortune can be heard in the previously mentioned ‘Blues I Can’t Hide’, a magnificent blues-based number. A top-class song is the rawly performed ‘Gonna Get Me A Satellite’ by Little Ernest Tucker & The Ted Walker Orchestra, featuring yet another delightful saxophone part. Inspiring guitar work sets ‘Hamtramck Mama’ by The York Brothers on track. A track that contains subtle traces of hillbilly. For a fun piano boogie, you'd best skip to the fiddle-adorned ‘Dirty Boogie’ by Roy Hall & His Cohutta Mountain Boys. You get a serving of rocking rhythm & blues with ‘Try Me One More Time’ by Nolan Strong & The Diablos, complete with great backing vocals.
Elvis not only captured the imagination but was also a source of inspiration for songs. The first song you get is ‘Elvis Is Rocking Again’ by The Hunt Sisters & Mark with Roy Hall & His Boys, a track in which The Hunt Sisters put their best foot forward with breathtaking harmonies. The second track is ‘Hey Mr. Presley’ by Pete De Bree & The Wanderers, featuring vocals by Jimmy Franklin.

True to tradition, you once again receive a beautifully produced 36-page full-color booklet, packed with rare photos, illustrations, and an extensive label history, as well as info about the tracks and the artists.
Volume 55 in the ‘That’ll Flat… Git It!’ is once again a standout. If you love the raw and energetic aspect that characterized Fortune Records recordings, then there is good news. Bear Family Records is currently working on a second volume centered on the raw rockabilly and wild rock ‘n’ roll of this Detroit label.
