‘No Rhyme or Reason’ is het zeventiende (!) studioalbum van bluesgitarist en -zanger Stacy Mitchhart, die al tijdens de vroege jaren negentig furore wist te maken in het clubcircuit van zijn eigen Cincinnati. Inmiddels woont Mitchhart in Nashville, stond hij in stadia als de Johan Cruijff ArenA voor tienduizenden mensen te spelen, en wist hij prijzen binnen te slepen als de Albert King Most Promising Guitarist Award tijdens de International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Bovendien werd hij am opgenomen in de Canadian South Blues Hall of Fame en viel hij onder andere bij de Music City Blues Society meermaals in de prijzen. Tja, dan mag je van een nieuw werkje wel wat kwaliteit verwachten, natuurlijk, en al zeker als de productie in handen was van iemand als tweevoudig Grammywinnaar Tom Hambridge. Wat er te horen is op ‘No Rhyme or Reason is dan ook van het betere allooi, al betreedt deze bluestopper nergens echt (ver)nieuwe(nde) paden.
Er wordt goed afgetrapt met het swingende ‘Good One Time’ – een van de bluesgeoriënteerde songs die extra kleur krijgt door keyboards en blazers zonder dat die extra’s de gitaren en wahwah-effecten zelf overstemmen. ‘Bad As You’ zet de luisteraar dan weer een momentje op het verkeerde been door met wat losse noten te beginnen voor de rest van de instrumenten er een van de beste songs op het album van maken.
Mitchhart is geen uitzonderlijke zanger, maar is meer dan goed genoeg om zelf de vocalen te verzorgen op zijn songs. Op ‘Sure Lookg Good to Me’ krijgt hij wel hulp van Gretchen Wilson, die hij al in de jaren negentig leerde kennen toen ze nog in de bar werkte. Voeg er nog de piano bij en het resultaat is een goed in het gehoor liggend ‘roadhouse rock’-liedje.
Er wordt even gas teruggenomen met de degelijke ballad ‘Once You Leave’, die omwille van het koortje, de piano en de blazers ietsje té gelikt klinkt, waarna we de Mississippi lijken te bezoeken in het zompige ‘Flip It to the Other Side’, waarop we (echt waar) te horen krijgen over pannenkoeken bakken en bluesplaten opzetten. Coole song.
Op ‘We Blew It’ laat Mitchhart hier en daar iets meer distortion op zijn stem horen, al is de muziek zelf misschien iets te braaf om van wat meer durf te kunnen spreken. Dat we met het oorspronkelijk door Jordan Rainer en Kevin Brandt voor Chris Stapleton geschreven (maar geweigerde) ‘It’s a Long Way Down’ opnieuw een erg rustig liedje met orgel en ‘gospelvibes’ te horen krijgen, verandert daar natuurlijk niet veel aan.
Het knap opgebouwde ‘Ain’t No Rhyme or Reason’ begint met een vette baslijn en reveleert zich meteen als een van de meer intrigerende, originele songs op het album. Dat dit nummer live een van de publieksfavorieten is, verwondert ons dus nauwelijks. ‘Mean Bad Wrong’ – met Kenny Neal als tweede zanger, harpspeler en gitarist – is dan weer een totaal ander nummer. Vooral Mitchharts slidegitaarwerk en de veel matuurdere, ruwere zang van Neal dragen positief bij tot de song, en het honky tonkpianowerk van die laatste draagt het nummer behoorlijk goed.
‘Never Gonna Get Me Back’ lijkt wat ons betreft misschien iets téveel voor de radio te zijn geschreven (al is de solo zeker de moeite waard), terwijl de shuffle van ‘She’s Just Right for Me’ dan weer aan BB King doet denken en vooral werkt dankzij enkele uitstekende bluessolo’s. ‘On My Dying Day’, tenslotte, sluit alles ijzersterk af. Beginnen én eindigen met sterke nummers: chapeau.

'No Rhyme or Reason' is the seventeenth (!) studio album by blues guitarist and singer Stacy Mitchhart, who first made a name for himself on the club circuit of his hometown of Cincinnati during the early 1990s. These days, Mitchhart lives in Nashville, has performed in stadiums such as the Johan Cruijff ArenA before tens of thousands of people, and has collected awards including the Albert King Most Promising Guitarist Award at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. He has also been inducted into the Canadian South Blues Hall of Fame and has received multiple awards from the Music City Blues Society. Naturally, such a résumé raises expectations for a new release, especially when the album is produced by two-time Grammy winner Tom Hambridge. What we hear on 'No Rhyme or Reason' is certainly of a high standard, although this blues veteran rarely ventures into truly new or groundbreaking territory.
The album gets off to a strong start with the swinging 'Good One Time', one of several blues-oriented tracks that gain additional colour from keyboards and horns without allowing those elements to overshadow the guitars and wah-wah effects. 'Bad As You', meanwhile, briefly misleads the listener by opening with a few loose notes before the rest of the band turns it into one of the strongest songs on the album.
Mitchhart is not an exceptional vocalist, but he is certainly more than capable of handling the lead vocals on his own material. On 'Sure Looks Good to Me', however, he receives assistance from Gretchen Wilson, whom he first met back in the 1990s when she was still working in a bar. Add some piano to the mix and the result is a highly enjoyable slice of roadhouse rock.
Things slow down somewhat with the solid ballad 'Once You Leave', which, thanks to its backing vocals, piano and horns, sounds just a little too polished. After that, we seem to pay a visit to Mississippi on the swampy 'Flip It to the Other Side', a track that – believe it or not – features lyrics about making pancakes and spinning blues records. A very cool song.
On 'We Blew It', Mitchhart occasionally adds a bit more distortion to his voice, although the music itself may be slightly too restrained to be considered particularly daring. The fact that 'It’s a Long Way Down'—originally written by Jordan Rainer and Kevin Brandt for Chris Stapleton, who ultimately passed on it—is another slow-paced song filled with organ and gospel influences does little to change that impression.
The cleverly constructed 'Ain’t No Rhyme or Reason' opens with a fat bass line and immediately reveals itself as one of the album’s more intriguing and original tracks. It therefore comes as no surprise that it has become a live audience favourite. 'Mean Bad Wrong', featuring Kenny Neal as co-vocalist, harmonica player and guitarist, is a completely different affair. Mitchhart’s slide guitar work and Neal’s rougher, more mature vocal performance elevate the song considerably, while the honky-tonk piano contributes greatly to its appeal.
'Never Gonna Get Me Back' perhaps feels a little too radio-friendly for our taste, although its guitar solo is certainly worthwhile. The shuffle-driven 'She’s Just Right for Me', on the other hand, recalls B.B. King and succeeds largely thanks to several excellent blues guitar solos.
Finally, 'On My Dying Day' brings the album to a powerful conclusion. Opening and closing with strong songs: hats off.
