Hun onlangs uitgebrachte vinyl single ‘Rockin’ Rebels Rock On / Private Eye’ klonk enorm veelbelovend. Meer nog, de single deed ons nieuwsgierig en met hoge verwachtingen uitkijken naar het toen reeds op stapel staand debuutalbum.
Tennessee Drifters is een rockabillytrio uit Eindhoven/Alkmaar en bestaat uit contrabassist en zanger Peter de Wit (voormalig frontman van de band Slapback Johnny), drummer Rob van Sambeek (speelde bij de inmiddels opgehouden Bang Bang Bazooka) en gitarist en zanger Jeroen van Delden (tevens gitarist bij Supersonics en eerder bij Texarkana Trio). De heren speelden reeds op zowat alle mogelijke festivals in Nederland en België en eind vorig jaar stonden ze zelfs in het voorprogramma van Danny Vera in het klokgebouw in Eindhoven.
Maar laten we nu ‘Life Is Pretty’ onder de loep nemen. Het album verschijnt op het Nederlandse Tombstone Records en werd opgenomen in de Popei Studio / studio Rockcity Institute in Eindhoven in januari 2025. Het werd gemixt en gemastered door de ervaren Roel Blommers, in samenspraak met de band en Bang Bang Marcel. Een pluspunt, en waarvoor wij steeds zijn te vinden, is het feit dat alle 14 nummers eigen geschreven songs zijn. Maar liefst 12 nummers vloeiden uit Jeroens pen, terwijl hij samen met Peter de lyrics schreef voor ‘Double Blue Boogie’. De arrangementen werden binnen het trio uitgetekend. De overige twee nummers, die ook op de single verschenen, zijn van de hand van Bang Bang Marcel. Marcel zong deze ook in en op ‘Life Is Pretty’ zorgt hij op enkele nummers ook voor de backing vocals. Op het album verdelen Peter en Jeroen de zang onder mekaar.
Het album blaast je al meteen van je sokken met opener ‘Boppin’ My Life Away’, inclusief een verrassend einde. Al dadelijk valt op dat het trio, met Peter en Rob een heel sterke ritmesectie in huis heeft. Een ritmesectie die zelfs al zou er een aardbeving plaatsvinden, onverstoord het tempo erin houdt. Dat geeft gitarist Jeroen de mogelijkheid om, zoals we van hem gewoon zijn, inventief op de zes snaren uit de hoek te komen. Leuk is trouwens ook de solo op de staande bas, die naadloos overgaat in Jeroens gitaarwerk, in ‘Fallin’ Down The Drain’. Variatie is overvloedig aanwezig op dit album. Iets wat we alleen maar kunnen toejuichen. Dat komt al aan het licht op ‘Double Blue Boogie’. Een nummer dat de creativiteit en vakmanschap van Tennessee Drifters in de spots plaatst. Om de song een bluestintje te geven, werd Adri Matheussen op bluesharp ingehuurd. Een schitterende zet, die de rockabilly en blues perfect doet samengaan. Dat wordt nog eens herhaald in ‘Liquor Blues’. Subliem! Sporen van country komen dan weer aan de oppervlakte in ‘Fade Away’ en ‘Fly Away’, terwijl we met ‘You Dragged Me Down’ op Jeroens aanstekelijke gitaarriff resoluut richting rockabilly gaan. Dat wordt nog voortgezet in de titeltrack, het rauwe ‘Fifteen Cats’ en ‘Tennessee Boogie’. Tennessee Drifters dragen het Eindhovens rockabillybroederschap Rockin’ Rebels hoog in het vaandel. Dat blijkt overvloedig in het eveneens op single verschenen ‘Rocking Rebels Rock On’.
Country komt ook aan bod in afsluiter ‘Free’. Nummer dat eindigt met revolverschoten. Hopelijk betekenen die niet het einde van Tennessee Drifters……!
Laat ons duidelijk zijn! ‘Life Is Pretty’ overtreft moeiteloos onze toch reeds enorm hoge verwachtingen. Het was de bedoeling van het trio om de authentieke rockabilly in een Eindhovens sausje te marineren. Wel, hierin zijn Jeroen, Peter en Rob met vlag en wimpel geslaagd. Meer nog, Tennessee Drifters trekt het rockabillygenre open naar een hoger level door het te injecteren met invloeden uit de blues en de country.
‘Life Is Pretty’ is een knaller van een debuutalbum. Schitterende nummers en dito arrangementen, prima ritmesectie en creatieve gitaarpartijen, badend in een uitstekend geluid, het is allemaal aanwezig. Hopelijk vloeien er nog meer songs van dit kaliber uit Jeroens pen. Een aanrader zonder meer!

Their recently released vinyl single, ‘Rockin' Rebels Rock On / Private Eye,’ sounded incredibly promising. What's more, the single made us eager and eagerly await their then-in-progress debut album.
Tennessee Drifters is a rockabilly trio from Eindhoven/Alkmaar, consisting of double bassist and vocalist Peter de Wit (former frontman of the band Slapback Johnny), drummer Rob van Sambeek (formerly of the now-defunct Bang Bang Bazooka), and guitarist and vocalist Jeroen van Delden (also guitarist for Supersonics and previously for Texarkana Trio). They've played just about every festival in the Netherlands and Belgium, and at the end of last year, they even opened for Danny Vera at the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven.
But now, let's take a closer look at ‘Life Is Pretty.’ The album will be released on the Dutch label Tombstone Records and was recorded at Popei Studio / Rockcity Institute in Eindhoven in January 2025. It was mixed and mastered by the experienced Roel Blommers, in consultation with the band and Bang Bang Marcel. A plus, and something we always appreciate, is the fact that all 14 songs are originals. Jeroen penned no fewer than 12 songs, while he and Peter wrote the lyrics for ‘Double Blue Boogie’. The arrangements were developed by the trio. The other two songs, which also appeared on the single, are by Bang Bang Marcel. Marcel also sang on them, and on ‘Life Is Pretty’, he provides backing vocals on several tracks. On the album, Peter and Jeroen share the vocals.
The album immediately sweeps you off your feet with the opener ‘Boppin' My Life Away’, complete with a surprising ending. It's immediately apparent that the trio, with Peter and Rob, has a very strong rhythm section. A rhythm section that, even in the event of an earthquake, keeps the tempo going undisturbed. This allows guitarist Jeroen to, as we've come to expect from him, be inventive on the six strings. The solo on the upright bass, which flows seamlessly into Jeroen's guitar work, is also enjoyable in ‘Fallin' Down the Drain’. Variety abounds on this album, something we can only applaud. This is already evident on ‘Double Blue Boogie’, a song that spotlights the creativity and craftsmanship of Tennessee Drifters. To give the song a blues flavor, Ari Matheussen was brought in on blues harp. A brilliant move, perfectly blending rockabilly and blues. This is repeated again on ‘Liquor Blues.’ Sublime! Traces of country resurface in ‘Fade Away’ and ‘Fly Away’, while ‘You Dragged Me Down’ takes us firmly in the direction of rockabilly, driven by Jeroen's infectious guitar riff. This continues in the title track, the raw ‘Fifteen Cats’ and ‘Tennessee Boogie’. Tennessee Drifters hold the Eindhoven rockabilly brotherhood Rockin' Rebels in high regard. This is abundantly evident in ‘Rocking Rebels Rock On,’ also released as a single.
Country also features in the closing track, ‘Free’, a song that ends with gunfire. Hopefully, those don't spell the end for Tennessee Drifters...!
Let's be clear! ‘Life Is Pretty’ effortlessly exceeds our already incredibly high expectations. The trio's intention was to marinate authentic rockabilly in an Eindhoven sauce. Well, Jeroen, Peter, and Rob succeeded with flying colors. What's more, Tennessee Drifters elevates the rockabilly genre by injecting it with influences from blues and country.
‘Life Is Pretty’ is a stunning debut album. Brilliant songs and arrangements, a great rhythm section, and creative guitar parts, all bathed in an excellent sound; it's all there. Hopefully, more songs of this caliber will flow from Jeroen's pen. Highly recommended!
