The Charcoal Sunset of kortweg T.C.S. is een Berlijnse Americanaband onder leiding van Juri Member (zang, akoest. en elektr. gitaren, harmonica en banjo). Andere bandleden zijn Norman Haase (drums en percussie), Dirk Flatau (piano, Fender Rhodes, orgel en accordeon), Florian Kolditz (staande en elektr. bas, backing voc.), Stefan Roller (pedal steel), Tobias Thiele (Spaanse git.) en Kyla Linnenkohl (backing voc.). De band werd opgericht in 2007 en inmiddels is de groep geëvolueerd tot één van de best verborgen authentiekste pareltjes van de Duitse rootsscene.  
Met hun vroegste opnames wisten ze het enthousiasme te winnen van zelfs internationale muziekcritici. Zo bekroonde het bekende Rolling Stone de band ooit met de titel ‘Demo van de maand’. Maar ook via hun optredens wist The Charcoal Sunset zijn strepen te verdienen. T.C.S stond o.a. in het voorprogramma van The Avett Brothers en Seth Lakeman. Hierdoor bewees de band dat uit Berlijn komende Americana net zo authentiek, rauw en meeslepend kan zijn als de Americana die uit Nashville of Austin komt.
Na wat omzwervingen en artistieke groei is de band klaar voor een nieuwe start. Die nemen ze met ‘Souvenirs’, hun debuut bij het Bear Family Records label.
Het album bevat 10 songs. Negen daarvan zijn van de hand van frontman Juri Member. Het overige nummer is een cover van Neil Youngs ‘For The Turnstiles’.
Het album opent met het akoestisch op de sporen gezette ‘If Jesus Was American’. Wat meteen opvalt is de mooie opbouw van het nummer, het schitterende arrangement en Juri’s imponerende stem, die mij hier aan die van Lou Reed doet denken en dan komt niet enkel door de gebruikte zin ‘Take a walk on the wild side’. Dit is zonder meer Americana op topniveau.
De band beweegt zich tussen Americana, folk en rootsrock. Dat laatste genre uit zich subliem in de titeltrack ‘Souvenirs’, inclusief een aardig stukje op de mondharmonica. Rootsrockend werkt de band zich later ook door ‘Statue Of Liberty’, heerlijk geserveerd met mandoline. Blues is dan weer de voedingsbodem voor ‘Basement Blues’, nummer dat tevens kan bogen op een heerlijke samenzang. Die voortreffelijke samenzang is tevens van de partij in het uptempo ‘Rolling Like A Wave’. Met een authentieke honky-tonk piano kondigt zich ‘Monkey Tonk’ aan, waarin andermaal die verbazingwekkend klinkende mondharmonica opduikt.
De gebruikte riff tilt ‘Sweet Harsh Winds’ naar een rock level en weer laat die razend knappe mondharmonica van zich horen. Zelfreflectie is Juri niet vreemd, dat laat hij horen in ‘The Kind Of Man I Am’.
Met het rustige ‘Lullaby’ sluit T.C.S het album af.
The Charcoal Sunset, met name Juri Member, heeft een talent om sfeervolle verhalen op de erbij horende muziek en met kennis van zaken uitgezochte arrangementen, te zetten.
‘Souvenirs’ bevat indrukwekkende muzikale herinneringen van een band die de Americana hoog in het vaandel draagt. Authentiek maar ook hedendaags, waardoor het album gewoonweg tijdloos is. Net zo tijdloos als de hoesfoto van de verbleekte schedel op de dorre, overbegraasde grond in Badlands, South Dakota in 1936.

The Charcoal Sunset, or T.C.S. for short, is a Berlin-based Americana band led by Juri Member (vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica, and banjo). Other band members are Norman Haase (drums and percussion), Dirk Flatau (piano, Fender Rhodes, organ, and accordion), Florian Kolditz (upright and electric bass, backing vocals), Stefan Roller (pedal steel), Tobias Thiele (Spanish guitar), and Kyla Linnenkohl (backing vocals). The band was founded in 2007 and has since evolved into one of the best-kept, most authentic gems of the German roots scene.
With their earliest recordings, they managed to win the enthusiasm of even international music critics. For instance, the famous Rolling Stone once awarded the band the title ‘Demo of the Month’. But The Charcoal Sunset also earned its stripes through live performances. T.C.S. supported acts such as The Avett Brothers and Seth Lakeman. Through this, the band proved that Americana from Berlin can be just as authentic, raw, and compelling as Americana from Nashville or Austin.
After some wandering and artistic growth, the band now is ready for a fresh start. They are taking this step with ‘Souvenirs’, their debut on the Bear Family Records label.
The album contains 10 songs. Nine of them were written by frontman Juri Member. The remaining track is a cover of Neil Young’s ‘For The Turnstiles’.
The album opens with ‘If Jesus Was American’. What immediately stands out is the beautiful structure of the song, the stunning arrangement, and Juri’s impressive voice, which reminds me of Lou Reed’s here—and that is not just because of the phrase ‘Take a walk on the wild side’. This is undeniably top-level Americana.
The band moves between Americana, folk, and roots rock. That latter genre expresses itself sublimely in the title track ‘Souvenirs’, including a nice harmonica section. Later, the band works its way through ‘Statue Of Liberty’ in a roots-rock style, served up wonderfully with mandolin. Blues, in turn, is the breeding ground for ‘Basement Blues’, a track that also boasts delightful harmonies. Those excellent vocal harmonies are also present in the uptempo ‘Rolling Like A Wave’. ‘Monkey Tonk’ announces itself with an authentic honky-tonk piano, in which that amazingly sounding harmonica pops up once again.
The used riff elevates ‘Sweet Harsh Winds’ to a rock level, and once again that incredibly skillful harmonica makes itself heard. Self-reflection is no stranger to Juri, as he demonstrates in ‘The Kind Of Man I Am’.
T.C.S closes the album with the quiet ‘Lullaby’.
The Charcoal Sunset, and Juri Member in particular, has a talent for setting atmospheric stories to the accompanying music and expertly selected arrangements.
‘Souvenirs’ contains impressive musical memories from a band that holds Americana in high regard. Authentic yet contemporary, making the album simply timeless. Just as timeless as the cover photo of the bleached skull on the barren, overgrazed ground in Badlands, South Dakota in 1936.
