Toen The Rolling Stones en andere Yardbirds de blues inwisselden voor een geheel eigen pad -  zoals de rockriffs van  ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ of  de esoterie van Renaissance – pikte een jongere generatie de roots weer op. We denken uiteraard aan Savoy Brown of de Elmore James-slide van Fleetwood Mac,  maar de Climax Blues Band is ook een goed voorbeeld. Tenslotte, luidde hun eerste naam niet voor niets ‘The Chicago Climax Blues Band’. Blues was opnieuw in: na hun start bij Parlophone  (twee LPs in 1969), volgden drie albums opnamen voor Harvest, het zogenaamd  progressieve label van EMI. Deze vijf platen, met alle bonussen van dien, vind je in deze box.
Er zijn twee kanten aan dit verhaal. Enerzijds, pent deze groep eigen materiaal dat is afgelegd van hun inspiratiebron: Chicago (bijv. ‘ST. Michael’s Blues’). Dit is een bijzonder hechte groep die precies weet welk geluid ze wil produceren. Als we een halve eeuw later niet meer van onze stoel vallen, dan komt dat vooral omdat we de voorbije eeuw muzikaal werden verwend. Anderzijds, houdt de van Peter Haycock perfect stand en klinkt de Cliiax Blues Band vele stukken beter dan de talloze gitaarmartelaars en –martelaressen die de nu op ons worden losgelaten.
Anderzijds, werd deze groep niet voor niets door Harvest binnengehaald. Op ‘A Lot of Bottle’,  hun eerste voor Harvest uit 1970, hebben we niet enkel recht een klassieker (‘Seventh Son’ van Willie Dixon), hoe inventief gebracht ook, maar vooral op eigenzinniger wek, zoals de jazzsoul, met kopers en al, van ‘Brief Case’.  Idem voor de knappe opvolger ‘Tightly Knit’, waar  ‘Come On in My Kitchen (R. Johnson) het gezelschap krijgt van een klankbord als ‘Who Killed McSwiggin’ dat niet zou hebben misstaan op de eerste platen van een Graham Bond.
Ik was deze groep eigenlijk uit het oog verloren, maar deze vijfling is een knappe verrassing. Fans krijgen een bijna twintig boni cadeau,  vaal live-vairianten.

After The Rolling Stones and other Yardbirds hds dropped their roots, younger picked them up again. Think Savoy Brown and the Elmore James slide-driven debut by Fleetwood Mac, but The Climax Blues Band is a fine example too. After all, they started out as The Chicago Climax Blues Band! Obviously, they covered Chicago standards and wrote original tunes based on their heroes’ templates, such as ‘Come On In My Kitchen (R. Johnson) or ‘Seventh Son’ (W. Dixon).  The Clmimax Blues Band knew exactly which sound they wanted and they sound  extremely tight.  If that were the entire story, they would be forgotten by now – but after two LPs for Parlophone in 1969, they recorded another three for Harvest between 1970 and 1972. That progressive label? Yes, that progressive label.  Well, the guys continued to record their favourite sound, but also added a series of self-written tunes that befit a progressive label with quite some souly and jazzy influences, e.g. the instrumentals ‘Brief Case’ or ‘Who Killed McSwiggin’ – the latter sounding a bit like the early Graham Bond.

I hadn’t listend to this band for a long time and I am pleasanntly surprised to hear that much of their output has stood the test of time so well.
