​De naam Teddy ‘Mr. Bear’ McRae zal misschien niet dadelijk een resultaat bij je opleveren. Onbewust heb je waarschijnlijk al composities van hem gehoord of als begeleiding van gekende artiesten. Gelukkig zijn er dan labels als KokoMojo die deze artiesten onder de aandacht brengen, zodat je ook als recensent nog straffe muziek kan ontdekken. Theodore McRae, zoals zijn identiteitskaart vermeldt, werd naast Teddy ‘Mr. Bear’ McRae ook vernoemd als kortweg Mr. Bear. Teddy was een uitermate veelzijdig persoon. Niet alleen was hij tenorsaxofonist, orkestleider, arrangeur, componist en producer, maar daarnaast was hij ook eigenaar van Rae Cox Records.
McRae werd geboren in Waycross, Georgia op 22 januari 1908, maar groeide op in Philadelphia. Zijn muzikale carrière startte hij in familieverband, samen met zijn broers, gitarist en trompettist Bobby en Dave op alt- en baritonsaxen. Later verkaste hij naar New York. In de twintiger en dertiger jaren werkte hij met o.a. Chick Webb en Artie Shaw. Na het overlijden van Webb werd Teddy de muzikale directeur van de band achter Ella Fitzgerald. Voor Shaw componeerde McRae diens succesvolste nummers, namelijk ‘Back Bay Shuffle’ in 1938 en één jaar later ‘Traffic Jam’. Hij speelde met, arrangeerde en schreef voor de allergrootste artiesten, zoals Billie Holiday, Benny Morton, Teddy Wilson, Red Allen en Count Basie. In de jaren 40 werkte Teddy met de orkesten van Cab Calloway, Jimmie Lunceford, Lionel Hampton en Louis Armstrong. Voor deze laatste werkte hij tevens als muzikaal directeur. In de fifties was McRae terug te vinden in de rhythm & blues en componeerde hij o.a. ‘All She Wants To Do Is Rock’ voor Wynonie Harris, ‘Love, Love, Love’ voor The Clovers en ‘Person To Person’ voor saxofonist Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson.
In de late jaren vijftig stichtte Teddy samen met jazzpianist en arrangeur Eddie Wilcox, Rae Cox Records en dochterlabel Enrica Records. De opnames catalogeerden zich onder jazz, rhythm & blues, blues, doo-wop, gospel en excentrieke instrumentals. In 1958 bracht McRae zijn meest gezocht 45 toertje uit, namelijk de formidabele rocker ‘Hifi Baby’. Nummer dat je vanzelfsprekend op dit album kan beluisteren.
Een duizelingwekkend palmares, maar laten we het nu over de 27 tracks van dit album hebben. Dat Teddy zijn naam ‘Mr. Bear’ waardig is blijkt al dadelijk uit opener ‘I’m Gonna Keep My Good Eye On You’ dat hij opnam als Mr. Bear & His Bearcats. Grommend declameert hij de lyrics met een prachtige bluesy honky tonk piano als begeleiding. Dat knap pianospel komt nogmaals tot uiting in de opvolger, het hoofdzakelijk instrumentale ‘Daybreak Rock’, aangevuurd door Mr. Bears kreten. Nummer dat hij opnam met de legendarische pianist Jack Dupree. Het tweetal hoor je later nog terug op ‘Lonely Road Blues’, waar ze mekaar vocaal prima aanvullen in de ‘call and response’.
Bluesy komt Teddy dan weer voor de dag in het emotioneel geladen ‘How Come’ en schenk zeker aandacht aan de lyrics. Een andere blues hoogvlieger is ‘Hold Out Baby’, waar zijn rauwe stemgeluid de song nog eens extra doet boosten.
Met klasse rocken doet Mc Rae in ‘Mr. Bear Comes To Town’ en natuurlijk op het reeds eerder genoemde ‘Hifi Baby’. Tot wat o.a. overdreven snelheid kan leiden, vertelt Teddy uitvoerig en humoristisch in ‘Radar’. Zijn gevoel voor novelty komt dan weer bovendrijven in ‘Peek A-Boo’.
Dat Teddy samen met zijn orkest prima begeleiders waren, kan je horen in de doo-wopper ‘Zippety Zip’ van The Empires. In dat genre situeert zich ook ‘My Girl Flip Flop’ van The Serenaders. Dat herhalen Teddy en zijn muzikanten nog in ‘Don’t Forget I Love You’ van The Butanes, alsook samen met The Revelons en hun ‘I Promise Love’. Het orkest van medeoprichter van Rae Cox Records, Eddie Wilcox, schittert in ‘Sittin’ And Cryin’’ van de vocale groep The Sunsets. Meer prachtige doo-wop serveren The Carnations in ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’.
Dat Rae Cox Records en Enrica Records heel wat indrukwekkend materiaal opnamen, is een feit.
Zo is gospel de toon van ‘Meet Me In Zion’ van The Satellite Wanderers. Een parel van een instrumentale surfrocker komt er met ‘Rockaway Special’ van The Demotrons. Meer schitterend instrumentaal werk is van de hand van Fender Guitar Slim in het rockende ‘Tender Rock’.
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins is tweemaal aanwezig. Een eerste maal in zijn gekende overdonderende stijl in ‘I Hear Voices’. De tweede keer met de flipside ‘Just Don’t Care’, pakt Jay het wat beschaafder en rustiger aan.
Gospelsgewijs sluit het album met ‘What A Fellowship’ van Heavenlly Gates Gospel Singers.
Teddy ‘Mr. Bear’ McRae overleed op natuurlijke wijze op 91 jarige leeftijd op 4 maart 1999.
Zoals je ziet was Mr. Bear een  virtuoos in het samenbrengen van elementen uit de rhythm & blues, jazz, rock-‘n-roll en het noveltygenre. Dat hij ook oor had voor knappe prestaties van collega artiesten, vereeuwigde hij in de opnames van Rae Cox Records en Enrica Records. Onbewust rolde hij zo de loper uit voor de komende, inmiddels legendarische rockers en pioniers van het Motown geluid. En geef ook de nodige aandacht aan zijn lyrics, want die zijn net zo subliem als zijn melodieën. Een meer dan formidabele release!

The name Teddy ‘Mr. Bear’ McRae might not immediately resonate with you. You've probably already heard his compositions, or on the recordings of the well-known artists he accompanied. Fortunately, labels like KokoMojo promote these artists, allowing you, as a reviewer, to discover impressive music. Theodore McRae, as his ID states, was also known simply as Mr. Bear, in addition to Teddy ‘Mr. Bear’ McRae. Teddy was an exceptionally versatile individual. Not only was he a tenor saxophonist, bandleader, arranger, composer, and producer, but he also owned Rae Cox Records.
McRae was born in Waycross, Georgia, on January 22, 1908, but grew up in Philadelphia. He began his musical career as a family, along with his brothers, guitarist and trumpeter Bobby and Dave on alto and baritone saxophones. He later moved to New York. In the 1920s and 1930s, he worked with Chick Webb and Artie Shaw, among others. After Webb's death, Teddy became the musical director of the band behind Ella Fitzgerald. McRae composed Shaw's most successful songs, namely ‘Back Bay Shuffle’ in 1938 and ‘Traffic Jam’ a year later. Their recordings ranged across jazz, rhythm & blues, blues, doo-wop, gospel, and eccentric instrumentals. In 1958, McRae released his most sought-after 45, the formidable rocker ‘Hifi Baby’. A track you can, of course, hear on this album.
A staggering list of achievements, but let's talk about the album's 27 tracks. Teddy's worthy of the name ‘Mr. Bear’ is immediately apparent from the opening track, ‘I'm Gonna Keep My Good Eye On You’, which he recorded as Mr. Bear & His Bearcats. He growls and declaims the lyrics, accompanied by a beautiful bluesy, honky-tonk piano. That masterful piano playing is once again evident on the follow-up, the primarily instrumental ‘Daybreak Rock’, fueled by Mr. Bear's screams. A song he recorded with legendary pianist Jack Dupree. You'll hear the duo again later on ‘Lonely Road Blues’, where they complement each other vocally in the call-and-response style.
Teddy shines bluesy again on the emotionally charged ‘How Come’, and be sure to pay attention to the lyrics. Another blues highlight is ‘Hold Out Baby’, where his raw voice gives the song an extra boost.
McRae rocks with class on ‘Mr. Bear Comes To Town’ and, of course, on the aforementioned ‘Hifi Baby’. Teddy elaborates on the potential consequences of excessive speed in ‘Radar’, with great humor. His sense of novelty surfaces again on ‘Peek-A-Boo’.
Teddy and his orchestra were excellent accompanists, as can be heard on The Empires' doo-wopper ‘Zippety Zip’. The Serenaders' ‘My Girl Flip Flop’ also falls within the same genre. Teddy and his musicians repeat this on The Butanes' ‘Don't Forget I Love You’, as well as with The Revelons on their ‘I Promise Love’. The orchestra of Rae Cox Records co-founder Eddie Wilcox shines on The Sunsets' ‘Sittin' And Cryin'‘. The Carnations serve up more beautiful doo-wop on ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’.
It's a fact that Rae Cox Records and Enrica Records have recorded a wealth of impressive material.
For example, gospel sets the tone for The Satellite Wanderers' ‘Meet Me In Zion’. A gem of an instrumental surf rocker arrives on The Demotrons' ‘Rockaway Special’. More brilliant instrumental work comes from Fender Guitar Slim on the rocking ‘Tender Rock’.
Screamin' Jay Hawkins appears twice. First, in his signature thunderous style, on ‘I Hear Voices’. The second time around, with the flipside ‘Just Don't Care’, Jay takes a more refined and calmer approach.
The album closes gospel-style with ‘What A Fellowship’ by Heavenly Gates Gospel Singers.
Teddy ‘Mr. Bear’ McRae passed away of natural causes at the age of 91 on March 4, 1999.
As you can see, Mr. Bear was a virtuoso at blending elements of rhythm & blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll, and the novelty genre. He also had an ear for the brilliant achievements of fellow artists, which he immortalized in his recordings for Rae Cox Records and Enrica Records. Unwittingly, he thus laid the groundwork for the upcoming legendary rockers and pioneers of the Motown sound. And pay close attention to his lyrics, because they're just as sublime as his melodies. A truly fantastic release!
