​In de vijftiger jaren van de vorige eeuw toen buitenlandse vakanties ingeburgerd raakten, was voor vele toeristen Italië de gedroomde plek. Genieten van de ‘dolce vita’ aan de Adriatische kust of aan een cocktail nippen in een zonovergoten romantische setting, het was voor velen de uitgesproken vakantie om de stress van werk en thuis voor eventjes achter zich te laten. Daar hoorde natuurlijk ook een soundtrack bij die dit gevoel nog versterkte. Een soundtrack die zelfs, eens terug thuis nog nazinderde en stilletjes deed dromen van de nog komende vakanties vele jaren later. Op ‘An Evening In Italy: Dining, Dancing And Romancing The Italian Way’ bundelt Bear Family Records maar liefst 28 tracks die zonder meer het Italiaans vakantiegevoel uitdragen. De bekende en minder bekende tracks komen zowel van Italiaanse artiesten, als Amerikaanse artiesten, want ook deze laatsten ontdekten Italië. Zelfs onze Italiaanse Belg Rocco Granata schittert op deze compilatie met, hoe kan het anders, zijn megahit ‘Marina’.
Wie kan er beter de spits afbijten dan Louis Prima en zijn onafscheidelijk ‘Buona Sera’. Later keert Prima nog terug, ditmaal samen met Keely Smith in de medley ‘Angelina / Zooma Zooma’. Prima wordt gevolgd door Vittorio Und Die Rivieras. Leadzanger Vittorio werd geboren in Italië maar verbleef vanaf zijn tiende in Duitsland, waar hij succes oogstte met ‘Tintarella Di Luna’. In zijn thuisland Italië had Fred Buscaglione succes als acteur en zanger. Hem krijg je in de ballade ‘Love In Portofino’ en het ietwat swingend ‘Teresa Non Sparare’.
In de fifties was Renato Carosone in Italië een gevierde musicalster. Hij is aanwezig met het swingend ‘Tu Vuo’ Fa’ L’Americano’ en ‘Torero’.
Trompettist Nini Rosso zet dan weer een voortreffelijk, overvloedig met trompet geïnjecteerd ‘La Ballata Della Tromba’ neer. Eén van de bekendste, zo niet dé bekendste Italiaanse melodie is ‘Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu’ , beter gekend als ‘Volaré’, hier krijg je de originele versie van Domenico Modugno. Een andere overbekende song is ‘Quando, Quando’, Quando’. Het nummer is veelvuldig gecoverd, maar het origineel is van Tony Renis, die ook co-writer van het nummer was.
Het Amerikaans gedeelte wordt op gang getrokken door de onbekende Lou Monte, alhoewel ook hij Italiaanse roots had. Hij werd geboren als Louis Scagione. Hij is tweemaal present. Een eerste maal met de rock-‘n-rollsong ‘Pizza Boy USA’ en een tweede keer met het van Merle Travis bekende ‘Sixteen Tons’, ditmaal in het Italiaans.
Een naam die meer bekend klinkt, is deze van de eveneens Italiaans roots hebbende Dion DiMucci. Hem hoor je in het overbekende ‘Donna La Prima Donna’. Toen Elvis Presley’ terugkeerde uit Duitsland waar hij zijn legerdienst vervulde, was hij een andere zanger geworden. De tijd van opzwepende rock-‘n-roll was voorbij en dat blijkt uit ‘It’s Now Or Never (O Sole Mio)’. Dat nummer krijg je later ook nog in een instrumentale rhythm & blues/boogieversie van pianiste Camille Howard als ‘O Sole Mio Boogie’.
Nat ‘King’ Cole was niet alleen gezegend met een unieke stem, hij kon ook elke muziekgenre de baas. Luister hier naar het verbluffende ‘My Dream Sonata’. Connie Francis nam in haar carrière meerdere Italiaans getinte nummers op. Eentje daarvan hoor je hier met ‘Roman Guitar’. Voor vocale samenzang zorgen even later dan weer The Gaylords met ‘Ma Ma Ma Marie’. In de jaren vijftig scoorde Roosemary Clooney meerdere hits. Zij tekent present met ‘Mambo Italiano’. ‘A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine’ zijn ingrediënten die zeker de Italiaanse vibe bevorderen. Dat had Paul Anka ook al begrepen, waarna Dean Martin met ‘On An Evening In Roma’ het croonergedeelte voor zijn rekening neemt.
Afsluiten doet dit album groots met Mario Lanzas ‘Ave Maria’.

Enjoying the ‘dolce vita’ on the Adriatic coast or sipping a cocktail in a sun-drenched romantic setting, it was for many the ideal holiday to leave the stress of work and home behind for a while. Of course, this also included a soundtrack that reinforced this feeling. A soundtrack that even resonated once back home and made you dream quietly of the holidays to come many years later.
