​De ‘Black Pearls’ serie is bijna afgerond, want met ‘Let’s Have Some Fun’ zijn we reeds bij het negende volume beland. De titel van dit volume neem je best letterlijk, want er staat weer heel wat fraais te beluisteren. Met de swingende titeltrack mag Jesse Thomas samen met zijn orkest het rijtje openen. Mahalia Jackson was niet alleen een indrukwekkende artieste maar had ook een neus voor talent. Zo ontdekte zij Johnny Sellers, die hem naar Chicago bracht. Sellers hoor je hier met ‘Heavyweight Mama’, een knappe rhythm & bluessong. Dat Big Duke de mosterd haalde bij Big Joe Turner valt duidelijk op in ‘Baby Beat It’, dat barst van Turners invloeden en toch kon hij geen commerciële successen boeken. Wie ook door shouter Turner beïnvloed werd, was Allen Thomas. Luister eens naar ‘Blowing My Horn’ en dan weet je het wel. Blanche Thomas’ ‘You Ain’t So Much A Much’ doet mij dan weer denken aan Big Mama Thornton. Voor een fraai staaltje van New Orleans rhythm & blues zorgt George ‘Mr. Blues’ Jackson met ‘Hold Me’. Jimmy Nolen verdiende als gitarist zijn sporen in de bands van Johnny Otis en James Brown. Bij deze laatste was hij bijna twintig jaar bandlid. Dat hij ook als soloartiest te smaken valt, bewijst hij in ‘I Can’t Stand You No More’. Met ‘I Got Loaded’ had Peppermint Harris een nummer 1 hit te pakken. Het hier opgenomen ‘Hey Little Schoolgirl’ klinkt je ongetwijfeld ook bekend in de oren. Mr. Bear, echte naam Teddy McRae was naast bandleader en componist ook een gerenommeerd saxofonist die werkte met o.a. Chick Webb, Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald en Champion Jack Dupree. Solo maakte hij opnames, waarvan het opzwepende ‘Mr. Bear Comes To Town’ er ééntje was. Subliem gitaarwerk kenmerkt ongetwijfeld ‘Sleepwalkin’ Woman’ van Smilin Joe. Volslagen onbekend voor mij is Dorothea Fleming. Misschien stond de fantastische rhythm & blues ‘I’m Glad You’re Leaving’ wel op de enige single die ze ooit opnam. Andere onbekenden die dit album sieren zijn ook Carl Matthews en Fercy Welch, die respectievelijk met ‘Big Man’ en ‘Back Door Man’ smaakvolle rhythm & blues serveren. Bekend is dan wel weer H-Bomb Ferguson, die je hier krijgt met de jumpblues ‘She Don’t Want Me’. Little Sylvia werkte samen met gitaarlegende Mickey Baker. Samen hadden ze in 1956 een dijk van een hit met ‘Love Is Strange’. Later zou ze in de spots staan als oprichter en CEO van het hiphoplabel Sugar Hill Records. Hier hoor je haar in het ook wat jazzy klinkend ‘Drive Daddy’. Ray Charles had met ‘Mary Ann’ zijn eerste hit te pakken. Het nummer handelde over Mary Ann Fisher die als bordenwasser in contact kwam met Charles en met hem als vocaliste begon te toeren van 1955 tot 1958. Niet verwonderlijk als je op ‘Wild As You Can Be’ hoort wat een zangeres ze was. Roy Brown was een inspiratiebron voor velen zoals B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Elvis, Jackie Wilson en Little Richard. Hoor Brown hier aan het werk in het eerder zeldzame ‘She’s Gone Too Long’. Wie voor een brug zorgde tussen de naoorlogse blues en de legendarische Tamla Motown sound was pianist Joe Weaver. In de beginjaren van Motown was Weaver ook te horen op veel van hun opnames. Weaver werkte ook samen met legendes als John Lee Hooker en Marvin Gaye. Hier krijg je Weaver met het instrumentale ‘Too Hot To Trot’ waarmee het album tevens afsluit.
Net als de eerder uitgebrachte volumes in de ‘Black Pearls’ serie is ook volume 9 weer eentje om te koesteren. Het mag intussen duidelijk zijn dat deze serie bol staat van steengoede rhythm & blues. Vele van deze songs zal je waarschijnlijk niet kennen, maar de leuze ‘onbekend is onbemind’ is hier meer dan eens van toepassing.

The 'Black Pearls' series is almost complete, because with 'Let's Have Some Fun' we have already reached the ninth volume. It is best to take the title of this volume literally, because there is a lot of beautiful music to listen to. Jesse Thomas and his orchestra open the list with the swinging title track. Mahalia Jackson was not only an impressive artist but also had a nose for talent. That's how she discovered Johnny Sellers, who brought him to Chicago. You can hear Sellers here with 'Heavyweight Mama', a beautiful rhythm & blues song. The fact that Big Duke got his inspiration from Big Joe Turner is clearly noticeable in 'Baby Beat It', which is bursting with Turner influences and yet he could not achieve commercial success. Another person influenced by shouter Turner was Allen Thomas. Listen to 'Blowing My Horn' and then you will know. Blanche Thomas' 'You Ain't So Much A Much' reminds me of Big Mama Thornton. George 'Mr. Blues’ Jackson provides a fine example of New Orleans rhythm & blues with 'Hold Me'. Jimmy Nolen made his mark as a guitarist in the bands of Johnny Otis and James Brown. He was a member of the latter for almost twenty years. He proves that he can also be enjoyed as a solo artist in 'I Can't Stand You No More'. Peppermint Harris had a number 1 hit with 'I Got Loaded'. The 'Hey Little Schoolgirl' recorded here will undoubtedly also sound familiar to you. Mr. Bear, real name Teddy McRae, was not only a bandleader and composer, but also a renowned saxophonist who worked with Chick Webb, Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald and Champion Jack Dupree, among others. He made solo recordings, including the exciting 'Mr. Bear Comes To Town' was one. Sublime guitar work undoubtedly characterizes 'Sleepwalkin' Woman' by Smilin Joe. Completely unknown to me is Dorothea Fleming. Perhaps the fantastic rhythm & blues 'I'm Glad You're Leaving' was on the only single she ever recorded. Other unknowns who grace this album are Carl Matthews and Fercy Welch, who serve tasteful rhythm & blues with 'Big Man' and 'Back Door Man' respectively. H-Bomb Ferguson is well known, who you get here with the jump blues 'She Don't Want Me'. Little Sylvia collaborated with guitar legend Mickey Baker. Together they had a huge hit in 1956 with 'Love Is Strange'. She would later find herself in the spotlight as the founder and CEO of the hip-hop label Sugar Hill Records. Here you can hear her in the somewhat jazzy sounding 'Drive Daddy'. Ray Charles had his first hit with 'Mary Ann'. The song was about Mary Ann Fisher, who came into contact with Charles as a dish washer and started touring with him as a vocalist from 1955 to 1958. Not surprising when you hear what a singer she was on 'Wild As You Can Be'. Roy Brown was an inspiration to many such as B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Elvis, Jackie Wilson and Little Richard. Hear Brown at work here in the rather rare 'She's Gone Too Long'. The bridge between post-war blues and the legendary Tamla Motown sound was pianist Joe Weaver. In Motown's early years, Weaver was also heard on many of their recordings. Weaver also worked with legends such as John Lee Hooker and Marvin Gaye. Here you get Weaver with the instrumental 'Too Hot To Trot' with which the album also closes.
Just like the previously released volumes in the 'Black Pearls' series, volume 9 is also one to cherish. It should be clear by now that this series is full of excellent rhythm & blues. You probably won't know many of these songs, but the motto 'unknown is unloved' applies here more than once.
