Met het derde volume van de uit vijf delen bestaande serie ‘Black Phantom Rockers’ duiken we andermaal in 26 tracks, waarin in een wazige en vaak mysterieuze sfeer, bekende artiesten te ontdekken zijn.
‘Hallelujah Rock And Roll’ start meteen met een klepper van formaat, namelijk de heerlijke rockende blues a la Chuck Berry ‘Hill Billy Blues’ van Clear Waters. Het betreft hier namelijk Eddy ‘The Chief’ Clearwater. De naam Clear Waters, refererend naar Muddy Waters, kreeg hij in de vijftiger jaren van drummer Jump Jackson. Een andere leuke phantom rocker kondigt zich aan als Big Red McHouston en ‘I’m Tired’. McHouston is eigenlijk gitarist Mickey Baker, ook gekend van het duo Mickey & Sylvia.
Gedurende een groot gedeelte van zijn carrière gebruikte hij de naam Smilin’ Joe, die je hier hoort in ‘Sleepwalkin Woman’. Later veranderde hij in Cousin Joe.
Lekker rocken kan je zeker op ‘Big Jimmy, Little Jack And Nellie’ van Bobby Flare. Voor zover geweten zou het zijn enige single worden. Rocken kan je tevens op ‘Nursery Rhyme Rock’ van Percy Welch and His House Rockers.
Bekend, zowel het nummer zijn de artiest Guitar Junior en de alom bekend dans ‘The Crawl’. Nummer dat bovendien door heel wat artiesten, o.a. The Fabulous Thunderbirds gecoverd werd. Wereldbekendheid zou Guitar Junior later krijgen als Lonnie Brooks.
Als Eddie Kirkland nam hij op met John Lee Hooker en toerde hij met Otis Redding. Als Eddie Kirk krijg je hem hier met het grotendeels instrumentale ‘The Hawg’. Begeleid zou hij hier zijn door Booker T & The MG’s.
David Walker was actief in het gospelgenre, maar wou graag rauwe en opzwepende rock-‘n-roll opnemen. Om de fans van zijn groep The Mighty Clouds Of Joy niet te choqueren, deed hij dit als Bunker Hill in ‘The Girl Can’t Dance’. Op gitaar hoor je Link Wray. Nummer dat trouwens wat stijl betreft, aan ‘the wild’ Little Richard doet denken.
De phantom rocker op Bobby Long’s ‘Jersey City’ is gitarist ‘Wild’ Jimmy Spruill. Hij is verantwoordelijke voor de meesterlijke vlammende gitaarsolo in het nummer. Algemeen wordt aangenomen dat Jimmy Spruill ook de gitarist zou zijn op ‘They Just Rockin’ And Rollin’’ van V. and B.B., alhoewel hij niet vermeld stond op de muzikantenlijst.
Delmer Wilburn bracht samen met The Mandals het rockende ‘Kissin’ Cousin’ uit halfweg vorige eeuw. Later maakte hij opnames als Del Delmon. Opnames die echter niet het verhoopte succes hadden.
Als Little Mac Simmons had hij zijn eigen platenlabel en via zijn club gaf hij jonge muzikanten een podium. Als kortweg Little Mac krijg je de man hier in ‘I’m Your Fool’.
Het gebeurde vaak dat artiesten die reeds een zekere bekendheid genoten, onder contract stonden bij een bepaald label. Daardoor waren zij vaak genoodzaakt om onder een pseudoniem op te nemen. Dat overkwam ook Jesse Stone, die tevens als Chuck Calhoun of Charles Calhoun opnam. Onder deze laatste naam hoor je hem samen met The Four Students in het swingende ‘My Pigeon’s Gone’.
Als Driftin’ Slim maakte hij meerdere opnames. Als Model ‘T’ Slim hoor je deze mondharmonicaspeler, gitarist en zanger tijdens ‘Shake Your Boogie’.
Knappe samenzang serveren o.a. de vocale groep The Ecuadors met ‘Let Me Sleep Woman’. Dat geldt ook voor het trage bluesy ‘It’s Hot’ van Gene & Billy. Beiden maakten zijn ook deel uit van diverse vocale groepen.
De titeltrack van dit volume wordt op rekening gezet van de dynamische zangeres Sandra Grimms.
Voor een potje verbaal geruzie kan je terecht bij het op een lekkere groove deinend gesproken ‘Topless’ van Rolls Royce & The Wheelers.
Series als deze zorgen steeds weer voor een hoop luisterplezier. Daarnaast bevatten ze ook ontdekkningen en  leuke weetjes over de artiesten die verantwoordelijk waren voor deze knappe opnames. Let bovendien ook op de schitterende illustraties van Dayvk Martins.
Gelukkig zijn we met dit derde volume nog niet aan het einde. De volgende release die op stapel staat, krijgt als titel ‘The Twirl’ mee. Binnenkort te lezen op deze site.

With the third volume of the five-part ‘Black Phantom Rockers’ series, we dive once again into 26 tracks, in which well-known artists can be discovered within a hazy and often mysterious setting.
‘Hallelujah Rock And Roll’ kicks off immediately with a massive cracker: the delightful rocking blues à la Chuck Berry, ‘Hill Billy Blues’ by Clear Waters. This refers to Eddy ‘The Chief’ Clearwater. He was given the name Clear Waters, a reference to Muddy Waters, by drummer Jump Jackson in the 1950s. Another fun phantom rocker announces itself as Big Red McHouston and ‘I’m Tired’. Both the song and the artist Guitar Junior are well-known, as is the widely known dance ‘The Crawl’. Moreover, this song was covered by quite a few artists, including The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Guitar Junior would later achieve worldwide fame as Lonnie Brooks.
As Eddie Kirkland, he recorded with John Lee Hooker and toured with Otis Redding. Here, as Eddie Kirk, you find him with the largely instrumental ‘The Hawg’. He is reportedly accompanied here by Booker T & The MG’s.

To avoid shocking the fans of his group The Mighty Clouds Of Joy, he did this as Bunker Hill in ‘The Girl Can’t Dance’. You can hear Link Wray on guitar. A song that, incidentally, in terms of style, is reminiscent of ‘the wild’ Little Richard.
The phantom rocker on Bobby Long’s ‘Jersey City’ is guitarist ‘Wild’ Jimmy Spruill. He is responsible for the masterful blazing guitar solo in the song. It is generally assumed that Jimmy Spruill is also the guitarist on ‘They Just Rockin’ And Rollin’’ by V. and B.B., although he was not listed on the musicians' roster.
Delmer Wilburn released the rocking ‘Kissin’ Cousin’ with The Mandals in the mid-20th century. Later, he made recordings as Del Delmon. Recordings that, however, did not achieve the hoped-for success.
As Little Mac Simmons, he had his own record label and, through his club, he gave young musicians a platform. You get the man here in ‘I’m Your Fool’ simply as Little Mac.
It often happened that artists who already enjoyed a certain level of fame were under contract with a specific label. As a result, they were often forced to record under a pseudonym. This also happened to Jesse Stone, who also recorded as Chuck Calhoun or Charles Calhoun. Under the latter name, you can hear him together with The Four Students on the swinging ‘My Pigeon’s Gone’.
He made several recordings as Driftin’ Slim. You can hear this harmonica player, guitarist, and singer as Model ‘T’ Slim during ‘Shake Your Boogie’.
The vocal group The Ecuadors, among others, serve up impressive harmonies with ‘Let Me Sleep Woman’. The same applies to the slow, bluesy ‘It’s Hot’ by Gene & Billy. Both were also part of various vocal groups.
The title track of this volume is credited to the dynamic singer Sandra Grimms.
For a bit of verbal bickering, you can turn to the spoken ‘Topless’ by Rolls Royce & The Wheelers, swaying along to a nice groove.
Series like these always provide a lot of listening pleasure. In addition, they also contain discoveries and fun facts about the artists responsible for these impressive recordings. Moreover, pay attention to the stunning illustrations by Dayvk Martins.
