In het midden van de zestiger jaren van vorige eeuw waren bands uit Chicago, zoals ook de bij ons bekende American Breed, regelmatig terug te vinden in de charts. Lang daarvoor echter broeide er ook reeds muzikale activiteit in de Windy City. De toen opkomende rock-’n-roll, doo-wop, rockabilly, teenager pop en rhythm & blues inspireerden vele bands. Via energieke optredens in clubs en high schools probeerden deze bands om vaste voet aan de grond te krijgen in het overbevolkte rock-‘n-rollwereldje. Sommigen slaagden daarin, terwijl anderen het bij lokale bekendheid moesten houden of soms even vlug vergeten werden als dat ze opgestaan waren.
Met deze nieuwe reeks schenkt Bear Family Records aandacht aan zowel de bekende als de minder bekende rockartiesten. Maar liefst 35 tracks loodsen je door de geschiedenis van de Chicago rock-‘n-roll, die bol staat van authentieke rock-‘n-roll, rockabilly, doo-wop, rhythm & blues en teenager pop.
Chicago’s antwoord op Elvis, Ral Donner, mag de spits afbijten met ‘I Got Burned’ en inderdaad Presley’s stijl is hier heel herkenbaar. Opvolger Ron Haydock had zijn stijl duidelijk gemodelleerd naar zijn grote voorbeeld Gene Vincent. Samen met The Boppers zet hij hier een voortreffelijk op Vincent geïnspireerd ’99 Chicks’ neer. Op een simpele maar enorm efficiënte riff drijft even later ‘Satan Is Her Name’ van Steve King and The Echelons. Schenk ook aandacht aan het creatieve gitaarwerk.
Als Eddy ‘The Chief’ Clearwater zou hij een legende worden in de blueswereld. Hier rockt hij zich Chuck Berry gewijs door ‘Cool Clear Water’. Voor een authentieke rock-‘n-rollsong kan je terecht bij Benny Ingram en het boppende ‘Jello Sal’. Eddie Cochran klinkt dan weer eerder door bij George Torrens in ‘TR-3’. Phil Orsi coverde zelfs Eddie Cochran en koos voor ‘Come On Everybody’. Robby and The Troubadours zochten dan weer hun heil bij Little Richard en ‘Long Tall Sally’, waarvan ze een enorm sterke versie opnamen.
Apart klinkt Penny Smith in ‘I’ve Got News For You’. Nummer dat als ‘big band rock’ mag gedefinieerd worden. Enorm leuk!
Al bleef hij beperkt tot een ‘local hero’, toch had Ronnie Rice met ‘T.N.T’ een parel van een song te pakken. We hebben het al zo vaak gezegd dat het onbegrijpelijk is dat sommige artiesten maar één single konden uitbrengen. Dat is zeker het geval voor Billy Prager, want met het deels door hemzelf geschreven ‘Do It Bop’, had hij een song te pakken, die zeker hitpotentieel had.
Voor een vleugje teenpop kan je terecht bij Tony Bellus en ‘Robbin’ The Cradle’.
Energieke rockabilly presenteren J. Mikel with The Hepcats in ‘Bettyjean Rock’, alsook Wayne Worley and His Worly Birds met  Sonny Burgess’ ‘Red Headed Woman’.
Fans van doo-wop worden op hun wenken bediend door The Deltones in ‘Early Morning Rock’. Dynamische doo-wop rock-‘n-roll komt er ook nog met ‘Were Wolf’ van Cat Bonafede & The Gem-Tones.
Bekende artiesten op deze compilatie zijn o.a. Hank Mizell met zijn overbekend ‘Jungle Rock’, dat tweemaal een hit werd, namelijk in 1958 en bij een heruitgave in 1976, alsook Hayden Thompson in Chuck Berry’s ‘Brown Eyed Handsome Man’.
Instrumentaal werk komt er met ‘Easy Pickin’’ van The Tazmen en het razend knappe ‘Rock And A Half’ van The Millionaires.
Afsluiters The Regulars and The Galaxies scoren met het deels op een heerlijke beat gesproken ‘Ride Your Horse’.
Het 40 pagina’s tellende met leuke vintage foto’s geïllustreerde booklet vertelt je alles over de artiesten en de tracks.
Dat de Windy City heel wat in de periode 1956-1963 heel wat aantrekkelijke muziek te bieden had, blijkt uit dit eerste volume. Het wordt dan ook nieuwsgierig uitkijken naar het tweede volume in deze reeks.

In the mid-1960s, Chicago bands like the well-known American Breed were regularly found in the charts. Long before that, however, musical activity was already brewing in the Windy City. The then-emerging rock 'n' roll, doo-wop, rockabilly, teenage pop, and rhythm & blues inspired many bands. Through energetic performances in clubs and high schools, these bands tried to gain a foothold in the overcrowded rock 'n' roll scene. Some succeeded, while others had to remain local or were sometimes forgotten as quickly as they emerged.
With this new series, Bear Family Records highlights both well-known and lesser-known rock artists. No fewer than 35 tracks guide you through the history of Chicago rock 'n' roll, which is brimming with authentic rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, doo-wop, rhythm & blues, and teenage pop. Chicago's answer to Elvis, Ral Donner, kicks things off with ‘I Got Burned’, and indeed, Presley's style is very recognizable here. His successor, Ron Haydock, clearly modeled his style on his great example, Gene Vincent. Together with The Boppers, he delivers an excellent Vincent-inspired ‘99 Chicks’. A simple yet incredibly effective riff later drives ‘Satan Is Her Name’ by Steve King and The Echelons. Also, pay attention to the creative guitar work.
As Eddy ‘The Chief’ Clearwater, he would become a legend in the blues world. Here, he rocks Chuck Berry-style through ‘Cool Clear Water’. For an authentic rock 'n' roll song, you can turn to Benny Ingram and the bopping ‘Jello Sal’. Eddie Cochran, on the other hand, is more prominent in George Torrens' ‘TR-3’. Phil Orsi even covered Eddie Cochran, choosing ‘Come On Everybody’. Robby and The Troubadours, on the other hand, turned to Little Richard and ‘Long Tall Sally’, recording a tremendously powerful version of it.
Penny Smith sounds distinctive on ‘I've Got News For You’, a song that can be described as ‘big band rock’. Incredibly enjoyable!
Although limited to a ‘local hero’, Ronnie Rice still had a gem of a song with ‘T.N.T’. We've said it so often that it's incomprehensible that some artists could only release one single. That's certainly the case for Billy Prager, because with the partly self-written ‘Do It Bop’, he had a song with definite hit potential.

The 40-page booklet, illustrated with charming vintage photos, tells you all about the artists and the tracks. This first volume demonstrates that the Windy City had a great deal of appealing music to offer between 1956 and 1963. It's therefore worth looking forward to the next volume.
