​Wie droomt er niet van zonovergoten stranden, wuivende palmbomen, de zee die blauw glinstert in het zonlicht en een romantische zonsondergang. Wel om die dromen een boost te geven, neemt Bear Family Records je mee naar de Aloha State Hawaii en zijn hula cultuur.
Dé vocale rhythm & blues vocale groep uit de fifties en begin zestiger jaren, The Drifters weten je alvast te prikkelen met ‘My Islands In The Sun’.
De 33 tracks omarmen de meest diverse rootsgenres. Countryartiest Hank Snow laat een rockend met country doorweven nummer horen in ‘Hula Rock’. En ook hier mag de lapsteelgitaar niet ontbreken. Hank weet hier ook de opkomende rock-‘n-roll op een sublieme manier te mixen met zijn liefde voor de Hawaii sound. Dat herhaalt Jimmy Newman even later ook met ‘Bop-A-Hula’. Voor een portie romantiek kan je daarna terecht bij Marty Robbins en zijn ‘Moonland’. Een andere heerlijke rocker komt er met ‘Let’s Go To Hawaii’ van The Revieras en let vooral op het heerlijke garagerockende orgeltje.
The Platters zijn synoniem voor kwalitatieve samenzang. Dat is hier niet anders in het swingende ‘Hula Hop’. Een andere legende is Mr. White Christmas, Bing Crosby. Hij laat een zoetgevooisd ‘Blue Hawaii’ horen. In 1958 nam Skeets Mc Donald ‘Hawaiian Sea Breeze’ op. Op gitaar hoor je hier niemand minder dan Joe Maphis.
Rocker van het eerste uur Bill Haley zet hier samen met zijn onafscheidelijke Comets een in zijn vertrouwde stijl ‘Me Rock-A-Hula’ neer.
Iemand die een toffe rockend ‘Hula Bop’ neerzet is Smokey Joe Baugh, die een tof schurend kantje aan de stem heeft.
Elmore James was een meester op de slidegitaar. Die zet hij hier in voor het instrumentale ‘Hawaiian Boogie No.1’, waarna een jungledrum ‘Hawaiian War Chant’ van The Playboys op de rails zet. Ander leuk instrumentaal, aan surf gelinkt werk presenteren Jon &The Nightriders met ‘Rumble At Waikiki’.
Fans van The Grateful Dead zullen Bill Browning wel kennen. Immers hun favoriete band nam Brownings ‘Dark Hollow’ op. Het nummer werd trouwens nog door een aantal andere artiesten opgenomen. Bill is hier rockend aanwezig met ‘Hula-Rock’.
Meer door country beïnvloedde Hawaiiaanse muziek krijg je van Jim Blakley in ‘Island Paradise’. Jim zorgt naast de zang ook voor de steelgitaar.  Met Chet Atkins als producer en Grady Martin als gitarist, nam Hank Locklin het met Hawaii doorweven rockend ‘Blue Grass Skirt’ op.
Met zijn rockabillyversie van ‘Mona Lisa’ scoorde Carl Mann een immense hit en ook ‘Island Of Love’ situeert zich in dat genre.
Randy Star bezorgde Elvis een aantal demo’s met songs, waarvan hij dacht dat het misschien nummers voor Presley zouden kunnen zijn. Dat deed hij ook met de song ‘Polynesian Paradise’, dat misschien de titel kon zijn Presley’s volgende film in 1966. De titel van die film werd echter ‘Paradise, Hawaiian Style’. Star liet ‘Polynesian Paradise’, alsook ‘Datin’’ andermaal inzingen door Jerry Keller. De eerste song haalde de film niet, maar krijg je op deze compilatie en voor ‘Datin’’ kan je terecht bij de soundtrack van ‘Paradise, Hawaiian Style’, waar Elvis het nummer zingt in duet met Donna Butterworth.
Eartha Kitt was zowel actrice, zangeres als tv persoonlijkheid. Haar bekendste nummer is het wat ondeugende ‘Santa Baby’. Met ‘Honolulu Rock And Roll’, een lekker swingende rock-‘n-rollsong is ze hier van de partij. Rocken kon Chuck Berry als de beste. In het instrumentale ‘Blues For Hawaiians’ doet hij het wat rustiger aan. Heerlijk bluesy!
Voor de humoristische noot zorgt de Duitser Paul Kuhn met ‘There Is No Beer On Hawaii’, een vertaling van zijn schlager ‘Es Gibt Kein Bier Auf Hawaii’.
Afscheid nemen doen we in stijl met ‘Aloha Oe (Hawaiian Farewell Song’) van Webley Edwards en Al Kealoha Perry.
‘Destination Hawaii’ is meer dan een verzameling schitterende tracks. De songs scherpen je reislust aan, je hang naar avontuur, het genieten van de tropische Zuidzee atmosfeer, de hula feesten en aan adembenemende romantische zonsondergang.
Wel, je hoeft je voor dit alles niet meer te verplaatsen, want met deze compilatie creeert het vakantieparadijs bij uitstek, onvergetelijke herinneringen bij jou thuis.

The quintessential rhythm & blues vocal group from the fifties and early sixties, The Drifters, are sure to whet your appetite with ‘My Islands In The Sun’.
The 33 tracks embrace the most diverse roots genres. Country artist Hank Snow presents a rocking, country-infused number in ‘Hula Rock’. And here, too, the lap steel guitar is not to be missed. Hank manages to mix the emerging rock ‘n’ roll with his love for the Hawaiian sound in a sublime way. Jimmy Newman repeats this a little later with ‘Bop-A-Hula’. For a dose of romance, you can then turn to Marty Robbins and his ‘Moonland’. Another delightful rocker comes along with ‘Let’s Go To Hawaii’ by The Revieras; pay special attention to the wonderful garage-rocking organ.

Someone who delivers a cool, rocking ‘Hula Bop’ is Smokey Joe Baugh, who has a nice, gritty edge to his voice.

The first song didn’t make it into the film, but you can find it on this compilation, and for ‘Datin’’, you can turn to the soundtrack of ‘Paradise, Hawaiian Style’, where Elvis sings the song in a duet with Donna Butterworth.

She is featured here with ‘Honolulu Rock And Roll’, a great, swinging rock-and-roll song. Chuck Berry could rock like the best. In the instrumental ‘Blues For Hawaiians’, he takes things a bit easier. Delightfully bluesy!
The German Paul Kuhn provides the humorous touch with ‘There Is No Beer On Hawaii’, a translation of his schlager ‘Es Gibt Kein Bier Auf Hawaii’.
