​Met ‘Do It’ kondigt zich het derde volume in de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ serie aan. Traditiegetrouw duiken we ook nu weer in de rijke schatkist van de rockende rhythm & blues die tussen 1951 en 1963 opgenomen werd. Ook nu zitten er weer een aantal bekende namen tussen, maar net zo interessant en boeiend zijn de songs van de minder gekende en zelfs obscure artiesten.
Starten doet dit album meteen met de titeltrack, uitgevoerd door The Adventurers, die de stomende rhythm & blues op smaak brengen met een vleugje doo-wop. Meer doo-wop volgt later nog met het rockende ‘Please Love Me Baby’ van The Five Jets, ‘Look At Me’ van The Sharps, alsook in ‘Little Turtle Dove’ van Otis Williams and His Charms.
‘Get On The Right Track Baby’ ken je zeker in de versie van Ray Charles. Hier krijg je de originele versie van Titus Turner, die het nummer ook schreef. Fats Domino en Dave Bartholomew zijn onlosmakelijk met New Orleans verbonden. Fats is aanwezig met ‘Don’t You Know’ dat beide heren samen schreven. Bartholomew werkte tevens als trompettist mee aan de opname. Dave Bartholomew was ook medeauteur van het vrolijke ‘Give It Up’ van The Hawks. Ook fungeerde hij tijdens die opname als bandleader. Meer New Orleans sound is te vinden in ‘Oooh-Wow’ van Roy Montrell, net als trouwens in ‘I’m Wise’ van Eddie Bo. Je kent de song ongetwijfeld, want Little Richard nam het op als ‘Slippin’ And Slidin’’. De lancering van de ‘twist’ werd door Chubby Checker afgesnoept van Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. The Midnighters presenteren het aanstekelijke ‘Rock, Granny, Roll’ met Hank achter de microfoon. Rauwer en knipogend naar Little Richard gaat het eraan toe tijdens ‘Switchin’ In The Kitchen’ van Pretty Boy en het orkest van Lee Simms. Tussen haakjes, Pretty Boy nam ook op als Don Covay. Jay McNeely behoorde tot de allerbeste saxofonisten. Hier hoor je hem, samen met zijn orkest, aan het werk op Jesse Belvin’s ‘Don’t Cry Baby’. Dinah Washington stond steeds garant voor schitterende interpretaties. Dat doet ze ook  op ‘Such A Night’ dat eerder bekend werd in Presley’s versie. Meer bekend volk passeert er met Clyde McPhatter en het soulvolle ‘High School Social’, net als The Drifters, inclusief Ben E. King met ‘Hey Senorita’. Wie ook geen introductie behoeft is Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry. Hier zet hij met ‘It Won’t Be Long’ weer een fraai stukje New Orleans rhythm & blues neer. Voor het originele ‘Susie Q’ tekende Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Een instrumentale versie krijg je hier van saxofonist Billy Carson and The King Bees. Formidabele versie! Formidabel klinkt ook Linda Hayes in ‘Hubba Hubba’. Blijkbaar zat het zangtalent in de familie, want Linda was de zus van Platters’ leadzanger Tony Williams.
Met afsluiter ‘The Party’s Over’ van de vocale groep The Fiestas zit het feestje erop, al belet niets je om, net als ondergetekende, meteen die ‘repeat’ knop in te drukken. Wat een voltreffer is ‘Do It’, het derde volume in de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ serie toch weer, dat andermaal door Gito Lima van knap artwork werd voorzien.

With ‘Do It’ the third volume in the ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ series is announced. Traditionally, we once again dive into the rich treasure chest of rocking rhythm & blues that was recorded between 1951 and 1963. Once again, there are a number of well-known names among them, but just as interesting and captivating are the songs of lesser-known and even obscure artists.
This album starts off immediately with the title track, performed by The Adventurers, who gave the steaming rhythm & blues a touch of doo-wop. More doo-wop follows later with the rocking ‘Please Love Me Baby’ by The Five Jets, ‘Look At Me’ by The Sharps, as well as in ‘Little Turtle Dove’ by Otis Williams and His Charms.
‘Get On The Right Track Baby’ is certainly familiar to you in the version by Ray Charles. Here you get the original version by Titus Turner, who also wrote the song. Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew are inextricably linked to New Orleans. Fats is present with ‘Don’t You Know’, which the two gentlemen wrote together. Bartholomew also worked on the recording as a trumpet player. Dave Bartholomew was also co-writer of the cheerful ‘Give It Up’ by The Hawks. He also acted as bandleader during that recording. More New Orleans sound can be found in ‘Oooh-Wow’ by Roy Montrell, as well as in ‘I’m Wise’ by Eddie Bo. You undoubtedly know the song, because Little Richard recorded it as ‘Slippin’ And Slidin’’. The launch of the ‘twist’ was stolen from Hank Ballard & The Midnighters by Chubby Checker. The Midnighters present the catchy ‘Rock, Granny, Roll’ with Hank behind the microphone. Rawer and winking at Little Richard, things get rougher during ‘Switchin’ In The Kitchen’ by Pretty Boy and the orchestra of Lee Simms. Incidentally, Pretty Boy also recorded as Don Covay. Jay McNeely was one of the very best saxophonists. Here you can hear him, together with his orchestra, at work on Jesse Belvin’s ‘Don’t Cry Baby’. Dinah Washington always guaranteed brilliant interpretations. She also does this on ‘Such A Night’, which was previously known in Presley’s version. More famous people pass by with Clyde McPhatter and the soulful ‘High School Social’, just like The Drifters, including Ben E. King with ‘Hey Senorita’. Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry also needs no introduction. Here he delivers another beautiful piece of New Orleans rhythm & blues with ‘It Won’t Be Long’. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was responsible for the original ‘Susie Q’. An instrumental version is provided by saxophonist Billy Carson and The King Bees. Formidable version! Linda Hayes also sounds formidable in ‘Hubba Hubba’. Apparently the singing talent ran in the family, because Linda was the sister of Platters’ lead singer Tony Williams. With the closing track ‘The Party’s Over’ by the vocal group The Fiestas the party really is over, although nothing prevents you, just like yours truly, from immediately pressing that ‘repeat’ button. What a hit is ‘Do It’, the third volume in the ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ series, which was once again provided with beautiful artwork by Gito Lima.
