​In de helft van de vorige eeuw bloeide de rhythm & blues als geen ander. Zowel artiesten die later een eervolle vermelding kregen, als zij die enkel maar een voetnoot waardig bleken, namen duizelingwekkende songs op. Het vierde volume in de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ brengt traditiegetrouw weer 28 van die nummers samen, die nog maar eens laten horen wat een schitterende muziek er destijds opgenomen werd. Grote dame Dinah Washington mag meteen van wal steken met ‘Ring My Phone’, dat ook een brug slaat tussen rhythm & blues, rock-‘n-roll en pop. Het nummer ken je misschien eerder in de versie van Brenda Lee. Wat volgt is de prachtige samenzang van de vocale groep The Mello-Tones. Tijdens ‘Rattle Shake Roll’ worden ze muzikaal ondersteund door het orkest van Hank Ivory, waarna we in doo-wopgenre blijven met The Rocketeers en hun ‘Talk It Over Baby’. Wie ook in dat genre opereerden, waren The Coins, hier present met ‘Look At Me Girl’. Heel veel schitterende samenzang op deze compilatie. Daarvoor zorgen ook The Adventurers in ‘Wallflower’. Later volgen trouwens ook nog The Rivingtones met ‘Have Mercy, Mercy Baby’, The Swallows in ‘Itchy Twitchy Feeling’, The Five Keys in ‘It’s A Groove’ en The Charms met ‘Hearts Of Stone’. Een mooi voorbeeld van het samengaan tussen authentieke rhythm & blues en doo-wop komt er met ‘Guitar Player’ van The Evergreens. En zoals de titel reeds laat vermoeden, trakteren de heren je ook nog op een knappe gitaarpartij. Liefhebbers van de sound van de sax komen dan weer aan hun trekken tijdens ‘I’m Telling You Baby’ van saxofonist Bumps Myers. Vocalist is Bobby Nunn, ooit nog lid van The Robins en The Coasters. Big Joe Turner is zo een artiest die ondergetekende steeds weet te bekoren. Dat doet hij ook nu tijdens ‘Sally Zu-Zaz’, inclusief de overheersende saxsolo van Albert Ammons. Willie Mae Thornton, beter gekend als Big Mama Thornton nam met Johnny Ace de titeltrack ‘Yes, Baby’ op. Rhythm & blues zoals die hoort te zijn, opzwepend en verschroeiend. De ‘crème de la crème’ verzamelt op ‘Betty Jean’ van Chuck Berry. Zo hoor je Willie Dixon op staande bas, drummer Fred Below en pianist Johnnie Johnson. Een andere grote naam is Ruth Brown. In 1953 nam ze ‘I Would If I Could’ op, dat ook ietwat naar de jazz knipoogt. Clyde McPhatter’s gouden stem sierde heel wat opnames van The Drifters. Het hier aanwezige ‘There You Go’ komt trouwens ook van een Drifters’ sessie uit 1954. Aan de ronkende namen komt nog geen einde, want daar is Little Richard al met het overbekende ‘Rip It Up’. ‘I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry Over’ werd door Elvis gecoverd. Hier krijg je het nummer indrukwekkend gebracht door Roy Hamilton. Voor het instrumentale kantje op dit album zorgen het trio The Egyptians met ‘Inkster Boogie’, alsook Googie Rene met ‘Wiggle Tail (Part 1). Rhythm & blues in zijn puurste vorm krijg je met ‘Tick Tock’ van Phil Flowers. Dat men het vaak niet zo nauw nam met het crediteren van een song, merk je aan ‘Little School Girl’ van Larry Williams. Williams beschouwt zich als componist van het nummer, terwijl het nummer van John Lee Williamson, beter gekend als de originele Sonny Boy Williamson is. Larry gaf het nummer wel een rockende touch. The Johnny Otis Show tekent present met Marie Adams in ‘Bye Bye Baby’, nummer waarin heel wat rockende songtitels opduiken.
Graag nog wat meer advies? Wel, steek dit album in je afspeelapparaat, draai die volumeknop maar richting maximum en……….’go crazy’. Satisfaction guarenteed!

In the middle of the previous century, rhythm & blues flourished like no other. Artists who later received an honorable mention, as well as those who only proved to be worthy of a footnote, recorded dizzying songs. The fourth volume in the ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ traditionally brings together 28 of those numbers, which once again show what wonderful music was recorded at the time. Grand lady Dinah Washington can start right away with ‘Ring My Phone’, which also bridges the gap between rhythm & blues, rock-‘n-roll and pop. You may know the song earlier in the version by Brenda Lee. What follows is the beautiful harmony singing of the vocal group The Mello-Tones. During ‘Rattle Shake Roll’ they are musically supported by Hank Ivory’s orchestra, after which we remain in the doo-wop genre with The Rocketeers and their ‘Talk It Over Baby’. The Coins, present here with ‘Look At Me Girl’, also operated in that genre. Lots of great harmonies on this compilation. The Adventurers also provide that in ‘Wallflower’. Later on, The Rivingtones also follow with ‘Have Mercy, Mercy Baby’, The Swallows in ‘Itchy Twitchy Feeling’, The Five Keys in ‘It’s A Groove’ and The Charms with ‘Hearts Of Stone’. A great example of the combination of authentic rhythm & blues and doo-wop comes with ‘Guitar Player’ by The Evergreens. And as the title already suggests, the gentlemen also treat you to a great guitar part. Fans of the sound of the sax will get their money’s worth during ‘I’m Telling You Baby’ by saxophonist Bumps Myers. Vocalist is Bobby Nunn, once a member of The Robins and The Coasters. Williams considers himself the composer of the song, while the song is an original by John Lee Williamson, better known as the original Sonny Boy Williamson. Larry did give the song a rocking touch. The Johnny Otis Show signs up with Marie Adams in ‘Bye Bye Baby’, a song in which quite a few rocking song titles appear.
