​Het negende volume in de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ serie luistert naar de naam ‘Whoa Mule’, titel die ontleed is aan de dynamische song van Leroy James, een artiest waar weinig of niets over terug te vinden is. Ook nu weer bevat dit album 28 tracks, die allemaal erg hoog kwalitatieve rhythm & blues uit de vorige eeuw bevatten.
Bob Kornegay mag met ‘Humdinger’ het startschot geven. Bob is ook gekend via zijn werk met The Du Droppers, Dave and Bob en als Pork Chops. Bob wordt gevolgd door het swingende ‘Rockin’ Mary’ van Wes Griffith with The Treys. Leider van het quintet The Treys was Freddie Johnson. Diens echtgenote was zangeres Pearl Woods en die hoor je meteen op de volgende track, de dansbare rhythm & blues ‘Sippin’ Sorrow’. Een van de grootste big bands in de rhythm & blues, was zeker dat van Lucky Millinder. Niet alleen beschikte het orkest voor 15 muzikanten, daarnaast waren er nog 2 vocalisten en de back vocal groep The Admirals. Kwaliteit stond steeds hoog in het vaandel bij Millinder. Dat kan je nogmaals ervaren in ‘Good Good Lovin’’. Jumpblues was het genre waarin Oscar McLollie zeer bedreven was, zoals te horen in ‘Pretty Gril’ dat hij samen met de Honeyjumpers in 1955 opnam voor Modern. Meer in dat genre serveert ook Hot Lips Page in ‘The Cadillac Song’ en zeker Jimmy Witherspoon met ‘Don’t Ever Move A Woman Into Your House’. Eén van de grote gitaristen in de rhythm & blues en blues was Lowell Fulson. Zijn talent kan je beluisteren in het instrumentale ‘Cash Box Boogie’. In de geschiedenis van de rhythm & blues krijgt Big Maybelle niet de eer die ze verdiende. Dat ze er wel aanspraak op mocht maken, bewijst ‘Ring Dang Dilly’, waar je ook Mickey Baker als gitarist hoort. ‘Justine’ is zo een song die vaak gecoverd wordt. Het origineel behoort toe aan Don and Dewey, die het nummer ook schreven. Prachtige samenzang krijg je dan weer van The Jackson Brothers in ‘Baby Baby’. Rockende rhythm & blues mag je verwachten van het Bobby Peterson Quintet met ‘Mama, Get Your Hammer’. Esquerita was dé inspiratiebron voor Little Richard. Geen wonder als je de aanstekelijke pianorocker ‘Believe Me When I Say Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay’ beluistert. Jimmy Nolen werd dan weer beïnvloed door Fats Domino, zoals te horen viel in ‘Don’t Leave Me No More’. Dat nummer krijg je hier niet, maar wel de b kant van die single, namelijk ‘Wipe Your Tears’, dat ook de sporen van Domino in zich draagt. Jimmy Breedlove maakte ook deel uit van de vocale groep The Cues. Hier zet hij met ‘That’s My Baby’ een knaller van een rhythm & blues neer. Hank Ballard zorgde samen met zijn Midnighters voor de twist dansrage. Bij de door Johnny Otis ontdekte The Royals, die hier present tekenen met ‘I Feel That-A-Way’, hoor je Hank ook als leadzanger. Bovendien componeerde hij ook het nummer. Meer bekend volk komt er met ‘Mr. Personality’ Lloyd Price en ‘Baby Please Come Home’.  Afsluiten doen we met de stevige rockende rhythm & blues ‘Back Stage At The Blackouts’ van Ken Murray’ Blackouts Of 1959.
We kunnen niet anders dan ook nu weer ‘Whoa Mule’, het negende volume in de ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ serie warm aan te bevelen. Wedden dat je ook nu weer een aantal fantastische ontdekkingen doet?

The ninth volume in the ‘Hi-Strung R & B’ series is called ‘Whoa Mule’, a title derived from the dynamic song by Leroy James, an artist about whom little or nothing can be found. Once again, this album contains 28 tracks, all of which contain very high-quality rhythm & blues from the previous century.
Bob Kornegay is allowed to give the starting signal with ‘Humdinger’. Bob is also known for his work with The Du Droppers, Dave and Bob and as Pork Chops. Bob is followed by the swinging ‘Rockin’ Mary’ by Wes Griffith with The Treys. The leader of the quintet The Treys was Freddie Johnson. His wife was singer Pearl Woods and you can hear her immediately on the next track, the danceable rhythm & blues ‘Sippin’ Sorrow’. One of the biggest big bands in rhythm & blues was certainly that of Lucky Millinder. Not only did the orchestra have 15 musicians, there were also 2 vocalists and the backing vocal group The Admirals. Quality was always a top priority for Millinder. You can experience that again in ‘Good Good Lovin’. Jump blues was the genre in which Oscar McLollie was very skilled, as can be heard in ‘Pretty Gril’ that he recorded with the Honeyjumpers in 1955 for Modern. More in that genre is also served by Hot Lips Page in ‘The Cadillac Song’ and certainly Jimmy Witherspoon with ‘Don’t Ever Move A Woman Into Your House’. One of the great guitarists in rhythm & blues and blues was Lowell Fulson. You can hear his talent in the instrumental ‘Cash Box Boogie’. In the history of rhythm & blues, Big Maybelle does not get the credit she deserved. That she did deserve it is proven by ‘Ring Dang Dilly’, where you can also hear Mickey Baker as a guitarist. ‘Justine’ is one of those songs that is often covered. The original belongs to Don and Dewey, who also wrote the song. You get beautiful harmonies from The Jackson Brothers in ‘Baby Baby’. You can expect rocking rhythm & blues from the Bobby Peterson Quintet with ‘Mama, Get Your Hammer’. Esquerita was the source of inspiration for Little Richard. No wonder when you listen to the catchy piano rocker ‘Believe Me When I Say Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay’. Jimmy Nolen was influenced by Fats Domino, as can be heard in ‘Don’t Leave Me No More’. You don’t get that song here, but you do get the b-side of that single, namely ‘Wipe Your Tears’, which also bears traces of Domino. Jimmy Breedlove was also part of the vocal group The Cues. Here he delivers a cracker of a rhythm & blues with ‘That’s My Baby’. Hank Ballard and his Midnighters provided the twist dance craze. In The Royals, discovered by Johnny Otis, who are present here with ‘I Feel That-A-Way’, you can also hear Hank as lead singer. He also composed the song. More famous people come with ‘Mr. Personality’ Lloyd Price and ‘Baby Please Come Home’. We close with the solid rocking rhythm & blues ‘Back Stage At The Blackouts’ by Ken Murray’ Blackouts Of 1959.
