​Met ‘This Night’ belanden we reeds bij het derde volume van deze serie. Een serie die de mysterieuze waas die rond de ‘Phantom Rockers’ hangt, doet verdwijnen.
Vaak kan via opzoekingswerk menig Phantom Rocker ontmaskerd worden, maar de uitvoerder van de eerste track zal voor eens en voor altijd onbekend blijven. De titeltrack ‘This Night’, komt namelijk van een acetaatopname, waarop enkel de titel van het nummer vermeld werd, maar wel een rechttoe rechtaan rocker van formaat is. The Noble Brothers waren enkel broers voor de opname. Eigenlijk waren het Jimmy Noble en George Weston. Hun stemmen blenden wel heerlijk op ‘Didn’t It Rock’. Zij worden gevolgd door het instrumentale surfnummer ‘Charge’ van The Renegades. De band bestond uit diverse kleppers, zoals Bruce Johnston en Sandy Nelson. Beide heren keren nog terug in ‘I Saw Her First’ van Bruce & Jerry. Een andere leuk instrumentaal surfnummer komt van The Gigolo’s met ‘Night Creature’. Die band bestond uit Bob Taylor, Don Cole, Buddy Wheeler en Zeke Zoeckler. Samen met anderen vormden zij als The Rebels de begeleidingsband van Duane Eddy.
Rockabillygitarist Johnny Powers had met ‘Long Blond Hair’ een hit te pakken. Hier presenteert hij zich als Johnny ‘Scat’ Brown wild rockend in ‘Mama Rock’. De naam werd bedacht om een Australische release mogelijk te maken. Een andere bekende artiest die onder een pseudoniem opnam, is Ronnie Dawson. Op een Diddley beat rockt hij als Commonwealth Jones tijdens ‘Do Do Do’.
Iemand die het niet bij één alias hield, was John Dee Abohosh. Hij nam op als Dick Bush, Johnny Jordan en Charlie Flener. Onder al deze namen is hij terug te vinden op deze compilatie. Als Dick Bush rockt hij op wel een heel aparte manier door ‘Ezactly’. Dat hij later als stand-up comedian zou werken, is volgens mij hier al aan zijn manier van zingen te horen.
Dat artiesten je ook op het verkeerde been kunnen zetten, is een feit. In ‘True Love’ van Cliff Rivers meen je Elvis te horen. Niet waar, want Cliff Rivers naam ook als Joey Castle op. Op ‘Starlight’ van Jack Huddle moet je de Phantom Rocker bij de begeleiders gaan zoeken. Immers gitarist is niemand minder dan Buddy Holly in zijn gekende persoonlijke stijl. De link met Holly is ook van de partij in ‘Pretty Baby’ van Gary Dale. Als Gary Toilett nam hij ook op met The Crickets en samen met zijn vrouw is hij als backing vocal te horen op Holly’s ‘That’ll Be The Day’ en ‘I’m Looking For Somenone To Love’.
Van Holly springen we met Whitey Pullen en ‘Let’s All Go Wild’ naar Gene Vincent. Pullen was Vincent’s road manager en maakte tevens deel uit van Gene’s band The Blue Caps. The Queen die we samen met Eddie Chamblee en zijn orkest horen in ‘Honky Tonky’, is dan weer de legendarische Dinah Washington, die eenmalig als The Queen een Phantom Rocker werd.
Een pseudoniem bedenken hoeft altijd moeilijk te zijn. Je spelt je naam van achter naar voor en je hebt er één. Dat deed Ike Turner en als Icky Renrut zorgde hij voor het super rockende ‘Hey---Hey’.
Als je Scotty Wayne hoort in ‘I’m Gonna Leave’, heb je het idee dat die stem je bekend voorkomt. Inderdaad dat is zo, want Wayne is niemand minder dan Freddy Fender.
Op ‘Pretty Jane’ van Mark Robinson wordt het helemaal te gek. Lee Hazlewood is Mark Robinson en de tweede Phantom Rocker hier is gitarist Duane Eddy. En ook bij The Fleas is het een samengaan van bekende namen. The Fleas bestonden uit Dave Burgess, Glen Campbell, Jerry Fuller en Ricky Nelson. De mannen maakten met ‘Scratchin’’ een heerlijke doo-wop rocker.
Doctor Rock in het aanstekelijke ‘That’s What You Do To me’, is het debuut van Herb Zane. In de U.S. Army Band was hij drummer en nadat hij toetrad tot de Alan Zane’s Orchestra van zijn broer, vormde hij in 1952 zijn eigen orkest.
Het album sluit af met ‘Rock Me Baby’ van de Canadese The Prowlers. Die werden geleid door zanger/gitarist Les Vogt, die tevens frontman was van The Emperors.
Het is niet verwonderlijk dat de ‘Phantom Rockers’ serie heel wat fans van kwalitatief hoogstaande rock-‘n-roll bekoort. Immers achter de Phantom Rockers gaan heel wat bekende en getalenteerde artiesten schuil.
Net zoals de eerder verschenen volumes, is ook ‘This Night’ weer meer dan het aanschaffen waard.

With ‘This Night’, we've already reached the third volume of this series. A series that dispels the mysterious shroud surrounding the ‘Phantom Rockers’.
Research often reveals many Phantom Rockers, but the artist behind the first track will remain unknown forever. The title track, ‘This Night’, comes from an acetate recording that only mentioned the song's title, yet is a straightforward, substantial rocker. The Noble Brothers were brothers only for the recording. They were actually Jimmy Noble and George Weston. Their voices blend beautifully on ‘Didn't It Rock’. They're followed by the instrumental surf number ‘Charge’ by The Renegades. The band featured several heavy hitters, including Bruce Johnston and Sandy Nelson. Both men return on Bruce & Jerry's ‘I Saw Her First’. Another great instrumental surf number comes from The Gigolo’s with ‘Night Creature’. That band consisted of Bob Taylor, Don Cole, Buddy Wheeler, and Zeke Zoeckler. Along with others, they formed Duane Eddy's backing band as The Rebels.

In Cliff Rivers' ‘True Love’, you think you hear Elvis. Not true, because Cliff Rivers also appears as Joey Castle. On Jack Huddle's ‘Starlight’, you'll have to look for the Phantom Rocker among the accompanists. After all, the guitarist is none other than Buddy Holly, in his signature style. The connection with Holly is also present in Gary Dale's ‘Pretty Baby’. As Gary Toilett, he also recorded with The Crickets and, along with his wife, can be heard as backing vocals on Holly's ‘That'll Be The Day’ and ‘I'm Looking For Someone To Love’.

The Fleas also features a fusion of familiar names. The Fleas consisted of Dave Burgess, Glen Campbell, Jerry Fuller, and Ricky Nelson. The band created a delightful doo-wop rocker with ‘Scratchin'‘.
‘Doctor Rock’, featuring the infectious ‘That's What You Do To Me’, is Herb Zane's debut. He was a drummer in the U.S. Army Band, and after joining his brother's Alan Zane's Orchestra, he formed his own in 1952.
The album closes with ‘Rock Me Baby’ by the Canadian band The Prowlers. They were led by singer/guitarist Les Vogt, who also fronted The Emperors.
It's no wonder the ‘Phantom Rockers’ series appeals to many fans of high-quality rock 'n' roll. After all, the Phantom Rockers are many well-known and talented artists.
Just like the previous volumes, ‘This Night’ is definitely worth buying. It sure will bring you many hours of great songs.
