Onlangs kreeg u hier de review van het eerste volume van ‘Black Phantom Rockers’ de nieuwe serie van het KokoMojo label. De overige Phantom Rockers, en die zijn er nog in een groot aantal, vonden hun onderdak bij het Atomicat label, dat nu het vierde volume in deze serie uitbrengt. Opnieuw 30 tracks van rockers die ofwel onbekend zijn of er voor kozen om via aliassen onbekend te blijven.
Opener is meteen de titeltrack en tevens een nooit eerder uitgebrachte acetaatopname. Die wordt geserveerd door Nelda ‘Ned’ Fairchild. Waarschijnlijk onbekend, maar toch was zij de componist van Cochran’s ’20 Flight Rock’. Cochran werd vermeld als co-writer, alhoewel aangenomen wordt dat Fairchild grotendeels verantwoordelijk is voor het nummer, zeker na het horen van ‘Who Baby’. Cochran is tevens de phantom rocker in John Ashley’s ‘Born To Rock’. In opvolger, het opzwepende ‘You Oughta See Grandma Rock’ van Skeets McDonald krijg je niet één maar twee phantom rockers. Op gitaren hoor je namelijk Eddy ‘Edward’ Cochran en Joe Maphis.
Alhoewel op ‘Swingin’ Daddy’ de begeleiders van Buddy Knox vermeld worden als The Rhythm Orchids, waren dat Buddy Holly en zijn Crickets en die drukten duidelijk hun stempel op het nummer. Buddy Holly en Cricket Jerry Allison zijn later ook de phantoms op ‘Starlight’ van Jack Huddle, waarin Holly’s gitaarstijl overduidelijk aanwezig is.
Paul Marvin, echte naam Marvin Gauthreaux, was een muzikant uit de regio van New Orleans. Die typische sound hoor je zeker in ‘Hurry Up’. Marvin komt later nog aan bod als Little Mummy met ‘Where You At Jack’. De naam Little Mummy hield hij over aan het feit dat Marvins ouder broer zijn naam uitsprak als mummy.
‘Ham ‘N’ Eggs’ doet bij momenten wat aan het repertoire van Ray Charles denken. Uitvoerder is echter Skip Manning die later als Phillip John Flowers soulopnames maakte.
Moest de stem van Jett Powers in ‘Go, Girl, Go’ je bekend in de oren klinken, dan is dat niet verwonderlijk want later zou Powers wereldwijd bekend worden onder de naam P.J. Proby.
Sharon Lee Myers maakte opnames als Jackie DeShannon en Sherry Lee. Op de poppy rockabillysong ‘I’ll Be True’ mixt ze beide namen tot Jackie Dee.
In het griezelige ‘The Whip’ van The Creeps, het op een Diddley riff drijvende ‘Who’s Been Here’ van Commonwealth Jones en ‘Pauline’ van Johnny & The Jills, is de rode draad phantom rocker Ronnie Dawson. Bij The Creeps zit hij achter de drums, bij Commonwealth Jones fungeert hij als zanger en gitarist en bij Johnny & The Jills combineert hij drumwerk met zang.
Een nummer dat nogal eens, soms met enkele wijzigingen, gecoverd werd is ‘What’s The Word –Thunderbird’. Hier krijg je de originele versie van Bobby & Buddy. Bobby was Bobby Robinson, CEO van Fury Records en Buddy was Buddy Barnes.
Knappe samenzang krijg je met vocale groepen als Bells en hun ‘Let Me Love Love You’, The Four Ekko’s met ‘Toodaloo Kangeroo’ en zeker tijdens ‘I’ll Be Gone’ van Ron-Dells. Oprichter en tevens groepslid was niemand minder dan Delbert McClinton.
Heerlijk instrumentaal door sax en gitaar voortgestuwd werk is er met ‘Tough’ van Bill Smith Combo, maar eigenlijk was dit Tom Brown van Tommy & The Tom Toms, die met Gene Summers werkten.
Het album staat bol van formidabele tracks. Zo is er ook ‘Bopper 486609’ van Donna Dameron. Het nummer werd geschreven door The Big Bopper. Zou The Big Bopper ook de vocalist zijn? Volgens sommige bronnen zou het nummer met versnelde stem opgenomen zijn, zodat hij als een vrouw klonk. Zeker weten zullen we het waarschijnlijk nooit. Als leuke anekdote kan dit evenwel tellen.
Zeker is wel dat dit vierde volume in de ‘Phantom Rockers’ serie 30 indrukwekkende tracks bevat. Interessant is tevens te weten welke artiesten achter de phantom rockers schuil gingen. ‘Phantom Rockers’ is dan ook zonder meer een serie om te koesteren.

Recently, you received the review of the first volume of ‘Black Phantom Rockers’, the new series from the KokoMojo label, here. Buddy Holly and Cricket Jerry Allison later also act as the phantoms on Jack Huddle’s ‘Starlight’, in which Holly’s guitar style is undeniably present.
