​Dit album is het eerste album van een serie waarop het KokoMojo label artiesten in de spots plaatst die als begeleider bekende artiesten lieten stralen. Die begeleiders speelden ontegensprekelijk een cruciale rol in de muziekgeschiedenis. Jammer genoeg werden hun bijdrages meer dan eens overschaduwd door de in de spots staande artiesten en zijn ze door de jaren heen vergeten geworden. De naam van de op 16 juni 1928 geboren en op 20 mei 1977 overleden Lafayette Thomas zal je dan ook niet onmiddellijk iets zeggen. Toch is de kans groot dat je hem al, al is het misschien niet onder eigen naam, gehoord hebt op opnames van andere artiesten. Zo werkte hij samen met o.a. Jimmy McCracklin, Jimmie Wilson, Sammy Price, Memphis Slim, Little Brother Montgomery, L.C. ‘Good Rockin’’ Robinson en Sugar Pie DeSanto. Lafayette kwam waarschijnlijk voor de eerste maal in contact met de blues via zijn oom Jesse ‘Baby Face’ Thomas. Deze zou samen met T-Bone Walker een grote invloed hebben op Lafayettes muzikale ontwikkeling.
Een artikel in het gerenommeerde blad Living Blues bestempelde hem als de beste gitarist uit de San Francisco-Oakland bluesscene, alsook een gitarist aan wie veel artiesten schatplichtig zijn. Thomas’ creativiteit op de zes snaren leidde meermaals tot soms wat vreemde, niet voor de hand liggende, maar steeds wel sublieme licks. Het leek vaak dat de ideeën voor zijn spel gewoonweg uit zijn handen vloeiden. Dit zal ook wel bijgedragen hebben tot het feit dat Lafayette moeiteloos kon overschakelen van een downhome blues naar een bluesballad. Bovendien wist hij iedere song waarop hij meespeelde van passende gitaarpartijen te zien. De ene keer dynamisch en ingetogen, om een andere maal stevig en vervormd uit de hoek te komen.
In 1948 was Lafayette Thomas voor de eerste maal te horen op een waxopname. Dat was op de B zijde van een opname van het Shermans Trio, namelijk het instrumentale en swingende ‘Jumpin’ For Julia’, waar deze compilatie ook mee start. Belangrijk om te vermelden is dat deze plaat uitgebracht werd door Bob Geddins. Deze was eigenaar van diverse platenlabels en Bob zou een grote rol spelen in Lafayettes verdere carrière. Lafayette bleef namelijk nauw verbonden met Bob Geddins en speelde mee op diens releases van het debuut in 1948 tot midden zestiger jaren. Thomas’ eerste soloplaat werd de single ‘Sam’s Drag / Baby Take A Chance On Me’. Die werd uitgebracht onder de naam L.J. Thomas and his Louisiana Playboys en werd opgenomen in de Sun Studios van Sam Phillips. In 1952 verhuisde deze single via Sam Phillips naar Chess Records. Zoals je op dit album hoort, draagt de rockende rhythm & blues instrumental ‘Sam’s Drag’ die typische Sun Studios sound. De flipside het tragere bluesy ‘Baby Take A Chance On Me’ verraadt dan weer de eerder vernoemde invloed van T-Bone Walker.
Lafayette Thomas was een bezige bij. In de vijftiger en zestiger jaren was hij te horen op meer dan honderd platen. Het meest aanwezig was hij op de opnames van Jimmy McCracklin & his Blues Blasters. Begin 1951 sloot Thomas zich zelfs aan bij McCracklins Blues Blasters, waar hij gitarist Robert Kelton verving. Zowel Lafayette als Robert hoor je op McCracklins ‘Rockin’ All Day’. Van Jimmy McCracklin krijg je trouwens nog enkele opnames. Met McCracklin zou Thomas blijven opnemen en optreden. Daarnaast was Lafayette ook van de partij op geweldige opnames van Jimmy Wilson, Roy Hawkins, Willie B. Huff en James Reed. Van de klassieker ‘Tin Pan Alley’ bevat deze compilatie zowel de versies van James Reed als Jimmy Wilson. Het op dit album terecht gekomen ‘Instrumental Jump (aka Whats Up!) werd tweemaal uitgebracht. Een eerste maal in 1953 op het Big Town label door Jimmie Wilson (afwisselend als Jimmie en Jimmy vermeld) & his All Stars. Een tweede maal prijkte het nummer als b-kantje op een Modern single van Johnny Todd. Als Jerry Thomas bracht Lafayette solo sublieme nummers uit als ‘Lost Mind (aka Standing In The Back Door Crying)’ en ‘Don’t Have To Worry (aka Jumpin’ In The Heart Of Town)’.
Op dit album bevindt zich ook de monumentale en originele versie van  ‘Strangest Blues’ van Jimmy Wilson and His Band. Naast Lafayette op gitaar hoor je hier Wild Willie Moore op tenorsax, bassist Johnny Heartsman en een niet na te trekken drummer. Klasbakken van het puurste soort!
Bij het beluisteren van deze compilatie valt meteen de gedrevenheid en het vakmanschap van Lafayette Thomas op. Hij had het talent en de gave om iedere opname naar een hoger niveau te tillen. Geen wonder dat hij gedurende de jaren vijftig en zestig op meer dan honderd platen te horen was. Thomas was een gitarist die de platen van zijn broodheren door zijn spel een extra glans gaf. Dat lukt hem zelfs op Bob Geddins Cavaliers’ versie van ‘Ghost Riders In The Sky’ en zeker op het overbekende ‘Nobody’s Business’ en op de slowblues, inclusief gospelkoor ‘I’m A Stranger Here’. Creatief en ingetogen presteert Lafayette op ‘Operator 209’ van Willie B. Huff. Creativiteit stond steeds hoog in het vaandel bij Thomas. Daar getuigen alle tracks op dit album van. Luister hiervoor aandachtig naar de gitaarsolo op ‘Lemon Squeezer’ van Jimmy Wilson and his All Stars en de slowblues ‘Things Ain’t What They Used To Be’ van James Reed.
 We ronden af met Johnny Parker & His Orchestra in ‘What You Did To Me’. Zoals reeds eerder vermeld, was Lafayette Thomas op ontelbare opnames te horen. De 28 tracks op dit album doen dan ook hunkeren naar meer. Het is dan ook goed nieuws dat in november volume 2 rond Thomas verschijnt. Op dat album wordt de periode 1955-1962 belicht. Ongetwijfeld iets om naar uit te kijken. Maar nu eerst en vooral genieten van volume 1. Enjoy this great guitarplayer!

This album is the first album in a series on which the KokoMojo label puts artists in the spotlight who, as accompanists, made famous artists shine. These accompanists undoubtedly played a crucial role in music history. Unfortunately, their contributions were often overshadowed by the artists in the spotlight and they have been forgotten over the years. The name of Lafayette Thomas, born on June 16, 1928 and died on May 20, 1977, will not immediately ring a bell. However, there is a good chance that you have already heard him, even if not under his own name, on recordings of other artists. For example, he worked with Jimmy McCracklin, Jimmie Wilson, Sammy Price, Memphis Slim, Little Brother Montgomery, L.C. ‘Good Rockin’’ Robinson and Sugar Pie DeSanto. Lafayette probably first came into contact with the blues through his uncle Jesse ‘Baby Face’ Thomas. Together with T-Bone Walker, he would have a great influence on Lafayette's musical development.
An article in the renowned magazine Living Blues labeled him as the best guitarist from the San Francisco-Oakland blues scene, as well as a guitarist to whom many artists are indebted. Thomas' creativity on the six strings often led to sometimes strange, not obvious, but always sublime licks. It often seemed as if the ideas for his playing simply flowed from his hands. This will also have contributed to the fact that Lafayette could effortlessly switch from a down-home blues to a blues ballad. Moreover, he knew how to find suitable guitar parts for every song he played on. Sometimes dynamic and subdued, and other times solid and distorted.
In 1948, Lafayette Thomas was heard for the first time on a wax recording. That was on the B side of a recording by the Shermans Trio, namely the instrumental and swinging ‘Jumpin’ For Julia’, which this compilation also starts with. It is important to mention that this record was released by Bob Geddins. He was the owner of several record labels and Bob would play a major role in Lafayette’s further career. Lafayette remained closely connected to Bob Geddins and played on his releases from the debut in 1948 until the mid-sixties. Thomas’ first solo record was the single ‘Sam’s Drag / Baby Take A Chance On Me’. It was released under the name L.J. Thomas and his Louisiana Playboys. This record was recorded at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios. In 1952, this single moved via Sam Phillips to Chess Records. As you can hear on this album, the rocking rhythm & blues instrumental ‘Sam’s Drag’ carries that typical Sun Studios sound. The flipside, the slower bluesy ‘Baby Take A Chance On Me’, betrays the aforementioned influence of T-Bone Walker.
Lafayette Thomas was a busy bee. In the fifties and sixties, he could be heard on more than a hundred records. He was most present on the recordings of Jimmy McCracklin & his Blues Blasters. Early 1951, Thomas even joined McCracklin’s Blues Blasters, where he replaced guitarist Robert Kelton. Both Lafayette and Robert can be heard on McCracklin’s ‘Rockin’ All Day’. Incidentally, you get a few more recordings of Jimmy McCracklin. Thomas would continue to record and perform with McCracklin. In addition, Lafayette was also present on great recordings of Jimmy Wilson, Roy Hawkins, Willie B. Huff and James Reed. This compilation contains versions of both James Reed and Jimmy Wilson of the classic ‘Tin Pan Alley’. The ‘Instrumental Jump (aka Whats Up!) that ended up on this album was released twice. First in 1953 on the Big Town label by Jimmie Wilson (alternately listed as Jimmie and Jimmy) & his All Stars. A second time the song was featured as a b-side on a Modern single by Johnny Todd. As Jerry Thomas, Lafayette solo released sublime songs such as ‘Lost Mind (aka Standing In The Back Door Crying)’ and ‘Don’t Have To Worry (aka Jumpin’ In The Heart Of Town)’.
This album also contains the monumental and original version of ‘Strangest Blues’ by Jimmy Wilson and His Band. In addition to Lafayette on guitar, you can hear Wild Willie Moore on tenor sax, bassist Johnny Heartsman and an unknown drummer. Class acts of the purest kind!
When listening to this compilation, the drive and craftsmanship of Lafayette Thomas immediately stand out. He had the talent and the gift to lift every recording to a higher level. No wonder he was heard on more than a hundred records during the fifties and sixties. Thomas was a guitarist who gave the records of his masters an extra shine with his playing. He even succeeds on Bob Geddins Cavaliers’ version of ‘Ghost Riders In The Sky’ and certainly on the well-known ‘Nobody’s Business’ and on the slow blues, including gospel choir ‘I’m A Stranger Here’. Lafayette performs creatively and modestly on ‘Operator 209’ by Willie B. Huff. Creativity was always held in high regard by Thomas. All tracks on this album bear witness to this. Listen carefully to the guitar solo on ‘Lemon Squeezer’ by Jimmy Wilson and his All Stars and the slow blues ‘Things Ain’t What They Used To Be’ by James Reed.
We conclude with Johnny Parker & His Orchestra in ‘What You Did To Me’. As mentioned before, Lafayette Thomas could be heard on countless recordings. The 28 tracks on this album make you long for more. It is therefore good news that volume 2 about Thomas will be released in November. That album highlights the period 1955-1962. Undoubtedly something to look forward to. But first and foremost, enjoy volume 1. Enjoy this great guitar player!
