Dat rock-‘n-roll niet steeds luidruchtig en wild hoeft te zijn, merkten wij reeds op het eerste volume in de ‘Rock-A-Ballads’ serie. Het tweede volume in deze serie focust andermaal op de romantische, emotionele en melodieuze opnames in dit genre. Wat eigenlijk nog opmerkelijker is, is het feit dat deze nummers net zo goed als hun luide, ritmische en wilde broertjes, even tijdloos zijn.
Het Duitse Bear Family Records brengt op dit tweede volume andermaal 31 tracks samen, die het romantische en liefdevolle gevoel zeker naar boven halen. Heel wat artiesten en songs zullen je ongetwijfeld bekend in de oren klinken. Daarnaast zal je ongetwijfeld songs ontdekken die tot nog toe voor je verborgen bleven.
Het album start meteen met een serieuze knaller, namelijk ‘Young Love’ van Sonny James, ongetwijfeld één van de mooiste rock-‘n-roll ballades uit de hoogdagen van het genre. Sonny, zowel als Tab Hunter scoorden met het nummer, maar de originele versie behoort toe aan Ric Cartney. Opvolger is ‘Teenage Love’ van Kimball Coburn. Nummer dat tevens door een toffe harmonieuze vocale groep ondersteund wordt. Charlie Feathers drijft het tempo ietwat op in ‘When You Decide, nummer dat ook Charlies countryinvloeden laat horen. Met Jerry Lee Lewis gaat het er meestal wat wilder aan toe. Toch weet hij te overtuigen met het trage, emotionele ‘I’ll Make It All Up To You’. Wie ook weet te imponeren is Jody Reynolds. Zijn in knap gitaarwerk gemarineerd ‘Fire Of Love’ klinkt zonder meer tijdloos. Voor een klassiek opgebouwde tearjerker, skip je best naar ‘Tell Me’ van Jerry Raines and The Vikings. Niki Sullivan verliet Buddy Holly’s Crickets op de top van hun succes. Dat Holly een enorme invloed op hem had, hoor je in zijn solosingle ‘Waitin’’. Nummer dat trouwens nooit uitgebracht werd. Ook Gene Vincent toont zijn emotioneel kantje hier in ‘I Sure Miss You’. Heel wat grote namen op dit volume, zoals ook Roy Orbison met ‘A True Love Goodbye’, een ballade zoals enkel de ‘Big O’ ze kan brengen.
Leon McAuliffe was ongetwijfeld het beroemste lid van Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys. Hier hoor je hem onder zijn eigen naam in het countryachtige ‘What’s The Use’. Bij emotionele ballades kan je moeilijk om The Everly Brothers heen. Don en Phil zijn present met het overbekende ‘All I Have To Do Is Dream’. Wereldwijd brak Joe South eind zestiger jaren door met ‘Games People Play’. Joe was echter al op jonge leeftijd gebeten door de muziekmicrobe. Luister maar eens naar het in 1958 opgenomen ‘It’s Only You’, dat ook door hem geschreven werd. Bekende artiesten die nog volgen zijn o.a. Carl Perkins en Ritchie Valens, respectievelijk met ‘Forever Yours’ en de alltime klassieker ‘Donna’. Voor Sun Records nam Warren Smith enkele van de beste rockabillyplaten op. Zijn countryzijde verloochende hij echter niet bij ‘Goodbye Mr. Love’.
Zoals uit het voorgaande blijkt, is dit tweede, tevens van een prima geluid voorziene volume, een mooi vervolg in de ‘Rock-A-Ballads’ serie.

We already noticed on the first volume of the ‘Rock-A-Ballads’ series that rock 'n' roll doesn't always have to be loud and wild. The second volume once again focuses on the romantic, emotional, and melodic recordings in this genre. What's even more remarkable is that these songs are just as timeless as their loud, rhythmic and wild counterparts.
On this second volume, Germany's Bear Family Records once again brings together 31 tracks that certainly evoke that romantic and loving feeling. Many artists and songs will undoubtedly sound familiar. You'll also undoubtedly discover songs that have remained hidden from you until now.
The album kicks off with a serious banger, ‘Young Love’ by Sonny James, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful rock 'n' roll ballads from the genre's heyday. Both Sonny and Tab Hunter scored with the song, but the original version belongs to Ric Cartney. The follow-up is ‘Teenage Love’ by Kimball Coburn. A song also backed by a great harmonious vocal group. Charlie Feathers picks up the pace a bit on ‘When You Decide’, a song that also showcases Charlie's country influences. Things usually get a bit wilder with Jerry Lee Lewis. Yet, he manages to convince with the slow, emotional ‘I'll Make It All Up To You’. Jody Reynolds also impresses. His ‘Fire Of Love’, marinated in clever guitar work, sounds absolutely timeless. For a classically constructed tearjerker, skip to ‘Tell Me’ by Jerry Raines and The Vikings. Niki Sullivan left Buddy Holly's Crickets at the height of their success. Holly's enormous influence on him is evident in his solo single ‘Waitin'‘, a song that, incidentally, was never released. Gene Vincent also shows his emotional side here on ‘I Sure Miss You’. A lot of big names appear on this volume, such as Roy Orbison with ‘A True Love Goodbye’, a ballad as only the ‘Big O’ can deliver them. Leon McAuliffe was undoubtedly the most famous member of Bob Wills' Texas Playboys. Here you hear him under his own name on the country-tinged ‘What's The Use’. For emotional ballads, it's hard to ignore The Everly Brothers. Don and Phil are present with the well-known ‘All I Have To Do Is Dream’. Joe South achieved worldwide fame in the late sixties with ‘Games People Play’. However, Joe was bitten by the music bug at a young age. Just listen to the 1958 recording ‘It's Only You’, which he also wrote. Well-known artists who followed include Carl Perkins and Ritchie Valens, with ‘Forever Yours’ and the all-time classic ‘Donna’, respectively. Warren Smith recorded some of the best rockabilly albums for Sun Records. However, he didn't deny his country side with ‘Goodbye Mr. Love’. As you can see from the previous section, this second volume, also featuring excellent sound, is a wonderful continuation of the ‘Rock-A-Ballads’ series.
