​Opnieuw krijgen we met dit volume 33 uitstekende tracks, die zoals jezelf verkiest kan bestempelen als rockende country of rock-‘n-roll met countryinvloeden. Welke omschrijving je ook kiest, het zijn en blijven aanstekelijke songs. Traditiegetrouw verwent het Atomicat label je ook nu weer met maar liefst drie acetaatopnames van ongekende artiesten. Een eerste ongekende artiest komt voor de dag met ‘Scrap Book’, een toffe country meesleper en wat een stem had die man. De tweede ongekende artiest presenteert zichzelf met ‘With Enough Love (From You)’. Een derde keer schittert een artiest van wie de naam onbekend blijft met ‘Itsy Witsy Bitsy Me’, waarin tevens mooie samenzang te horen valt.
Het is onbegrijpelijk dat deze acetaten nooit gecommercialiseerd werden. De songs zijn van een zodanig hoog niveau en de uitvoerende artiesten beschikten over enorm krachtige stemmen. Jammer en zeker gemiste kansen voor de uitvoerders.
Starten doen we met Thumper Jones en ‘Singing The Blues’ een mooie crossover van country en pop, met uitmuntend gitaar- en pianowerk. Meer crossoverwerk komt later nog met het fantastische ‘Lookin’ Around Downtown’ van Frankie Miller. Nummer dat heel wat hitpotentieel in zich heeft. Een meer dan schitterende gitaarpartij bevat ook ‘Can’t Play Hookey’ van Tommy Wood. Van ‘antwoordsongs’ zijn heel wat voorbeelden. De artiest neemt dan een nummer van een collega, meestal met een vragende titel, waarop hij of zij dan een antwoord verzint. Dat lukte Margie Ward wonderwel met George Jones’ ‘Who Shot Sam’, dat als antwoord het rockende ‘I Shot Sam’ kreeg.
Toen Gene Greene en Charley Straight in 1912-1913 ‘Frankie and Johnny’ opnamen, konden ze niet vermoeden dat hun nummer vele malen zou gecoverd worden. Een heerlijke versie krijg je hier van Buffalo Johnson. Het nummer bevat zowel hillbilly, rockabilly en country. Schitterend!
Voor mooie samenzang skip je best naar ‘Sixty Minute Man’ van York Brothers. Rosalie Allen was ‘The Queen Of Yodelers’. In haar ‘It’d Surprise You’ laat ze dat echter niet horen. Een leuk feit is wel dat ze als eerste vrouw opgenomen werd in de ‘Country Music Disc Jockey Hall Of Fame’. Gene Henslee leidde The Rancho Valley Boys. Dat hij het er ook als soloartiest voortreffelijk vanaf brengt, hoor je in ‘Dig’n And Datin’’, een meer dan geslaagde mix van country en rock-‘n-roll. ‘You Got The Money, I Got The Time’ was een hit voor de early Lefty Frizzell. Het nummer wordt hier gecoverd door Ernie Lee & His Southeners en let zeker op de fiddlesolo. Een andere geslaagde cover komt er met ‘That’s All Right’ door Ray Moore, inclusief sublieme steelgitaar. Heerlijk! Als je van een razendsnelle gitaar houdt, dan is de intro van ‘Shine, Shave, Shower’ van John Talley een kolfje naar je hand. Een prima intro voor deze super rockende song. Hou je van degelijk mondharmonicawerk dan geniet je zeker van ‘The Life We Live’ van Jimmy Renfro & His Memory Valley Boys met zang van Vernon Filler.
Rockabilly is dan weer het genre dat Gene Morris aanboort in ‘If You Were My Love’. Hillbilly komt aan de oppervlakte in ‘Mark Me Off You List’ van Pete Pyle. Voor de muzikale omkadering zorgden Chet Atkins and The Texas Troubadours.
Op een eerder ingetogen manier eindigt deze compilatie met Helen Hall en haar ‘Honky Tonk Husband’.
Gitaren, fiddle, piano en steelgitaar zijn de hoofdinstrumenten op dit album. Sporadisch krijg je als aanvulling nog wat mondharmonica.
Dit vijfde volume in de ‘Rockin’ Country Style’ serie brengt andermaal weer parels van songs aan de oppervlakte en dat kunnen wij alleen maar toejuichen.

This volume once again presents us with 33 excellent tracks, which you can label as rocking country or rock 'n' roll with country influences. Whichever description you choose, these are and remain infectious songs. True to tradition, the Atomicat label once again treats you to no fewer than three acetates by unknown artists. The first unknown artist presents ‘Scrap Book’, a fantastic, captivating country track, and what a voice he had. The second unknown artist presents himself with ‘With Enough Love (From You)’. A third time, an artist whose name remains unknown shines with ‘Itsy Witsy Bitsy Me’, which also features beautiful harmonies.
It's incomprehensible that these acetates were never commercialized. The songs are of such a high caliber, and the performers possessed incredibly powerful voices. It's a shame, and certainly a missed opportunity for the performers. We start with Thumper Jones and ‘Singing the Blues’, a beautiful crossover of country and pop, featuring excellent guitar and piano work. More crossover work comes later with the fantastic ‘Lookin' Around Downtown’ by Frankie Miller. A song with a lot of hit potential. A truly brilliant guitar part also features in ‘Can't Play Hookey’ by Tommy Wood. There are plenty of examples of ‘answer songs’. The artist takes a song by a colleague, usually with a question-like title, and then comes up with an answer. Margie Ward achieved this remarkably well with George Jones' ‘Who Shot Sam’, which was answered with the rocking ‘I Shot Sam’.

Another successful cover comes with Ray Moore's ‘That's All Right’, complete with sublime steel guitar. Wonderful! If you like a lightning-fast guitar, the intro to John Talley's ‘Shine, Shave, Shower’ is right up your alley. A great intro to this super-rocking song. If you enjoy solid harmonica work, you'll definitely enjoy ‘The Life We Live’ by Jimmy Renfro & His Memory Valley Boys, featuring vocals by Vernon Filler.
Rockabilly, on the other hand, is the genre Gene Morris explores in ‘If You Were My Love’. Hillbilly surfaces in Pete Pyle's ‘Mark Me Off Your List’. Chet Atkins and The Texas Troubadours provided the musical accompaniment.
This compilation concludes on a rather subdued note with Helen Hall and her ‘Honky Tonk Husband’.
Guitars, fiddle, piano, and steel guitar are the main instruments on this album. Sporadically, you'll also find some harmonica as a supplement.
This fifth volume in the ‘Rockin' Country Style’ series once again unearths some gems, and we can only applaud that.
