Twee jaar geleden verscheen het derde volume, met de titel ‘Shake That Thing’ in de ‘Sin On Saturday, Pray On Sunday’ serie. Het was eventjes wachten op dit vierde volume, maar het was het wachten waard. Samensteller Mark Armstrong selecteerde opnieuw 28 adembenemende tracks. Rhythm & blues en blues waren de aangewezen genres voor het nachtelijk vertier op zaterdag, terwijl gospel in de lokale kerk op zondag, de gedurende de vorige nacht bedreven zondes moest neutraliseren.
Heel wat legendarische artiesten uit de blues en rhythm & blues bevolken het vierde volume, dat start met het rockende ‘Cool, Calm And Collected’ van Guitar Gable en King Karl, die het vocale werk doet. Grootheid Lightnin’ Slim trakteert je op een knap bluesy ‘Too Close Blues’. Op de mondharmonica hoor je niemand minder dat Lazy Lester. Lightnin’ Slim wordt onmiddellijk gevolgd door de countryblues van Big Bill Broonzy met ‘Five Feet Seven’, opgenomen in 1949. Let zeker op het fraai stukje gitaarwerk. Broonzy keert nog terug in de laatste track met Washboard Sam. Een eerste gospel krijgen we met Sister Wynona Carr en Brother Joe May in de vorm van ‘It’s All Right’. Een duet waar de stemmen super blenden. Het mooi samengaan van stemmen geldt ook voor de vocale mannengroep The Stars Of Hope met ‘Where Shall I Go’, een aanstekelijk gospelnummer. Veel bluesartiesten verlieten destijds de Mississippi Delta om in Chicago hopelijk carrière te maken. Iemand bij wie dat zeker lukte was Magic Sam. Hem hoor je hier op ‘Love With A Feeling’. Op de staande bas hoor je grootmeester, die ook onder eigen naam schitterende songs opnam, Willie Dixon. Ook Lee ‘Shot’ Williams verkaste naar Chicago, destijds het mecca van de blues. Hem hoor je op het met subliem gitaarwerk overgoten ‘Hello Baby’. Een groot talent op de gitaar was ook Elmore James. ‘Rock My Baby Tonight’ is een heel mooi voorbeeld van zijn kunnen. Geef ook aandacht aan de pianopartij, want achter de zwarte en witte toetsen zat Ike Turner. Bluesmuzikanten ondersteunden mekaar vaak tijdens opnames. Dat gebeurde ook toen Sonny Boy Williamson II ‘I Cross My Heart’ opnam. Sonny Boy hoor je natuurlijk op zang en bluesharp. Willie Love zat aan de piano en Elmore James was één van de gitaristen. Een indrukwekkende overtuigende gospel komt er met Rev. Julius Cheeks en ‘Turn Your Radio On’. Zijn grootste successen boekte Julius samen met The Sensational Nightingales. Die komen trouwens later nog op de proppen met ‘I Want To Go’, waar Julius leadzanger is. Ja, het was een klein artiestenwereldje destijds. Meer prachtige gospel komt er nog met ‘Let Your Will Be Done’ van Fairfield Four, alsook met The Pilgrim Travellers en hun ‘Good News’. Louie Meyers bespeelde naast de gitaar, ook nog de bas en mondharmonica. Op het instrumentale ‘Bluesy’ laat hij evenwel de mondharmonica over aan Junior Wells. Op drums hoor je de befaamde Fred Below en broer Dave Meyers ontfermde zich over de bas. Schitteren doet Louie nog eens over op het eveneens instrumentale ‘Just Whaling’. Meer indrukwekkende mondharmonica valt te ontdekken op ‘Hand Me Down Baby’ van Sidney Maiden. Een samengaan van talentvolle muzikanten kan je verwachten op het swingende ‘Glad I Don’t Worry No More’ van The Fat Man. Neen, niet Fats Domino, maar wel drummer en zanger Alfred Wallace. Begeleiders waren de leden van het Sunnyland Slim Trio. Naast de piano verzorgde Slim ook de backing vocals en gitarist was niemand minder dan Robert Lockwood. Sunnyland Slim zelf hoor je onder eigen naam aan het werk in opvolger, de klasseblues ‘It’s You Baby’. Een schitterende ‘one man blues’ serveert Julius King, zich enkel op gitaar begeleidend in ‘One O’Clock Boogie’.
Een opzwepende rockende rhythm & blues volgt daarna met ‘Yeah Baby’ van Stella Johnson en meteen de titeltrack van volume vier. Omwille van zijn creatief gitaarspel was Jody Williams, midden jaren ’50 in Chicago één van de meest gevraagde sessiemuzikanten. Onder de naam ‘Sugar Boy’ Williams nam hij ‘Little Girl’ op. Grote dame in de blues was Willie ‘Big Mama Thornton’ Mae. Hier tekent ze present met het overbekende en rauwe ‘I Smell A Rat’. Brownie McGhee is geen onbekende. Zijn opnames met Sonny Terry zijn overbekend. Hier gooit hij het met ‘I’m 10.000 Years Old’ over de gospelboeg.  Afsluiten is voorbehouden aan de swingende downhome blues van Washboard Sam met ‘Washboard Swing’, met ogenschijnlijk halfbroer Big Bill Broonzy op gitaar.
Het is een traditie, maar wij kunnen niet anders dan besluiten met het feit dat het KokoMojo label met het vierde volume in de ‘Sin On Saturday, Pray On Sunday’ het zoveelste schot in de roos aflevert.

Two years ago, the third volume, titled ‘Shake That Thing’, appeared in the ‘Sin On Saturday, Pray On Sunday’ series. It took a while for this fourth volume to arrive, but it was worth it. Compiler Mark Armstrong once again selected 28 breathtaking tracks. Rhythm & blues were the preferred genres for Saturday nighttime entertainment, while gospel music in the local church on Sunday was meant to neutralize the sins committed the previous night.
Numerous legendary blues and rhythm & blues artists populate the fourth volume, which opens with the rocking ‘Cool, Calm And Collected’ by Guitar Gable and King Karl, who provides the vocals. The great Lightnin' Slim treats you to a beautifully bluesy ‘Too Close Blues’. On harmonica, you'll hear none other than Lazy Lester. Lightnin’ Slim is immediately followed by the country blues of Big Bill Broonzy on ‘Five Feet Seven’, recorded in 1949. Be sure to note the beautiful guitar work. Broonzy returns on the final track with Washboard Sam. We get our first gospel performance with Sister Wynona Carr and Brother Joe May on ‘It’s All Right’. A duet where their voices blend beautifully. This beautiful blend of voices also applies to the male vocal group The Stars Of Hope on ‘Where Shall I Go’, a catchy gospel number. Many blues artists left the Mississippi Delta in the hope of making a career in Chicago. One who certainly succeeded was Magic Sam. You hear him here on ‘Love With A Feeling’. On upright bass, you hear grandmaster Willie Dixon, who also recorded brilliant songs under his own name. Lee ‘Shot’ Williams also moved to Chicago, the blues mecca of its time. You hear him on the sublime guitar work of ‘Hello Baby’. Elmore James was also a great guitarist. ‘Rock My Baby Tonight’ is a wonderful example of his skill. Pay attention to the piano part, because Ike Turner was behind the black and white keys. Blues musicians often backed each other up during recordings. This was also the case when Sonny Boy Williamson II recorded ‘I Cross My Heart’. You can hear Sonny Boy on vocals and blues harp, of course. Willie Love was on piano, and Elmore James was one of the guitarists. An impressively convincing gospel comes with Rev. Julius Cheeks and ‘Turn Your Radio On’. Julius achieved his greatest success with The Sensational Nightingales. They would later appear with ‘I Want To Go’, on which Julius is the lead singer. Yes, it was a small world of artists back then. More beautiful gospel is yet to come with ‘Let Your Will Be Done’ by the Fairfield Four, as well as with The Pilgrim Travelers and their ‘Good News’. Besides guitar, Louie Meyers also played bass and harmonica. On the instrumental ‘Bluesy’, he leaves the harmonica to Junior Wells. On drums, you hear the renowned Fred Below, and brother Dave Meyers takes care of bass. Louie shines again on the equally instrumental ‘Just Whaling’. More impressive harmonica can be discovered on Sidney Maiden's ‘Hand Me Down Baby’. Expect a collaboration of talented musicians on the swinging ‘Glad I Don't Worry No More’ by The Fat Man. No, not Fats Domino, but drummer and singer Alfred Wallace. The members of the Sunnyland Slim Trio accompanied him. Besides piano, Slim also provided backing vocals, and guitarist was none other than Robert Lockwood. You can hear Sunnyland Slim himself performing under his own name on the follow-up, the classy blues ‘It's You Baby’. Julius King serves up a brilliant ‘one-man blues’, accompanying himself solely on guitar on ‘One O'Clock Boogie’.
A rousing, rocking rhythm & blues follows with ‘Yeah Baby’ by Stella Johnson, the title track of volume four. Because of his creative guitar playing, Jody Williams was one of the most sought-after session musicians in Chicago in the mid-1950s. Under the name ‘Sugar Boy’ Williams, he recorded ‘Little Girl’. Willie ‘Big Mama Thornton’ Mae was a leading figure in the blues scene. Here, she performs the well-known and raw ‘I Smell A Rat’. Brownie McGhee is no stranger. His recordings with Sonny Terry are well-known. Here, he takes a gospel approach with ‘I'm 10,000 Years Old’. The album ends with the swinging, down-home blues of Washboard Sam on ‘Washboard Swing’, featuring his apparent half-brother Big Bill Broonzy on guitar.
It's a tradition, but we can't help but conclude that the KokoMojo label has delivered yet another bull's-eye with the fourth volume in the 'Sin On Saturday, Pray On Sunday' series. Congratulations!
