​Veel zon en een door hoge golven gedomineerd water vormen de ideale setting voor surfers. In gepimpte auto’s trokken de Californische surfers in de zestiger jaren naar de kust. Het water en de golven waren spectaculair, maar hielden echter ook risico’s in, die het surfplezier ook wel eens deden omslaan. Om van het bij deze sport horend muziekgenre, namelijk ‘Surf Beat’ te genieten, hoef je echter niet noodzakelijk op een surfplank de hoge golven te trotseren. Immers de voor het instrumentale genre specifieke cleane, twangy gitaarklanken, drijvend op een leuke percussie, zijn ook enorm dansbaar. De term ‘surf beat’ vond pas goed ingang toen in 1961 Dick Dale & The Del-Tones een enorme hit scoorden met het gelijknamige nummer. Dat nummer ‘Surf Beat’ mag ook deze compilatie starten. Niet door Dick Dale, maar wel in de overigens prima versie van Aki Aleong and The Nobles. Dick Dale & The Del-Tones komen later nog aan bod met het eveneens bekende ‘Misirlou Twist’. Meer bekende artiesten volgen later met Duane Eddy, The Ventures en Jan and Dean.  Deze compilatie bevat maar  liefst 33 tracks, boordevol schitterend gitaarwerk, vaak versterkt met sax. Gitaarpartijen die drijven op een ritmische percussie, de golven symboliserend, waarop de surfers hun behendigheid en beheersing tonen. Het geluid van de golven introduceert toepasselijk ‘Tidal Wave’ van The Challengers. Zij keren later nog terug tijdens ‘Pipeline ‘65’’. Tot de eerder genoemde ‘pimpted-up cars’ behoorden ook hot rods. De muzikale mix van deze vehicles en het surfen inspireerde The Super Stocks, die hier met maar liefst 4 nummers aanwezig zijn. Leadgitarist op deze tracks is de gekende producer Richie Podolor, die samenwerkte met o.a. Steppenwolf en Three Dog Night. Eén van de hoekstenen van de surfmuziek was het in 1962 door The Chantays uitgebrachte ‘Pipeline’. Hier is de groep aanwezig met ‘Tragic Wind’ dat alle ingrediënten van ‘Pipeline’ bevat, inclusief de elektrische piano. Wat instrumentale gitaarnummers betreft waren de Engelse The Shadows geen onbekenden. Van één van hun songs, namelijk ‘Driftin’’ krijg je hier de versie van de Deense The Go-Getters. Een vreemde eend in de bijt, alhoewel een erg smakelijke, zijn The Nocturnes, die een complete blazerssectie hadden. Het formidabele resultaat daarvan hoor je in ‘Baha-Ree-Ba!’. Voor de allereerste opname van ‘Dardanella’ moeten we terug naar 1919. Het was bovendien de eerste plaat, waarvan meer dan 3 miljoen exemplaren werden verkocht. In 1961 namen The Raiders er een uitermate succesvolle versie van op. De muzikanten op  deze versie zijn niet gekend, maar het is best mogelijk dat Leon Russell achter de piano zat. Meer dan formidabel werk op de zes snaren mag je verwachten tijdens ‘Rumble Bee’ van The New Dimensions. Apart klinken, o.w.v. de piano zeker Dave Myers and The Surftones in ‘King’s Surf’, al kon de band geen grote doorbraak forceren. Wie wel een doorbraak konden forceren waren The Crossfires, die hier present zijn met ‘Inferno’. Toen zij hun naam veranderen, scoorden zij meerdere malen. Hoe dan zul je vragen? Wel zij werden The Turtles en wie kent er niet ‘Happy Together’? Al Casey was een veelgevraagd sessiegitarist en speelde reeds lang voordat surfmuziek ontstond. Hem hoor je tweemaal, namelijk in ‘Surfin’ Blues Part 1’ en daarna in ‘Part 2’. Ondanks Al’s prima gitaarpartijen werd het geen hit en hier hoor je wel degelijk Leon Russell op keyboards. Een obscure en uiterst zeldzame opname komt er met ‘Thunderbeat’ van The Thundermen. Het was trouwens hun enig 45 toertje. Wat een razend knappe song!
 Jan & Dean mogen afsluiten met ‘Something A Little Bit Different’ en die titel mag je letterlijk nemen, want naast een gesproken intro van Jan Berry bevat het nummer tevens ‘shouted’ tussenkomsten van het publiek.
‘Surf Beat!’ is een album waarbij je een zomers goed gevoel krijgt. Of zon en water je al of niet kunnen bekoren, het maakt allemaal niet uit. Zeker is wel dat de 33 tracks op dit album je zonder meer in hun greep krijgen.

Lots of sun and a water dominated by high waves form the ideal setting for surfers. In pimped cars, Californian surfers went to the coast in the sixties. The water and the waves were spectacular, but also involved risks that sometimes changed the surfing pleasure. However, to enjoy the music genre associated with this sport, namely ‘Surf Beat’, you do not necessarily have to brave the high waves on a surfboard. After all, the clean, twangy guitar sounds specific to this instrumental genre, floating on a nice percussion, are also very danceable. The term ‘surf beat’ only really became popular in 1961 when Dick Dale & The Del-Tones scored a huge hit with the song of the same name. That song ‘Surf Beat’ may also start this compilation. Not by Dick Dale, but in the otherwise excellent version by Aki Aleong and The Nobles. Dick Dale & The Del-Tones will be featured later with the equally well-known ‘Misirlou Twist’. More well-known artists will follow later with Duane Eddy, The Ventures and Jan and Dean. This compilation contains no less than 33 tracks, full of magnificent guitar work, often reinforced with sax. Guitar parts that float on a rhythmic percussion, symbolizing the waves, on which the surfers show their agility and control. The sound of the waves appropriately introduces ‘Tidal Wave’ by The Challengers. They will return later during ‘Pipeline ‘65’. The previously mentioned pimped cars also included hot rods. The musical mix of these vehicles and surfing inspired The Super Stocks, who are present here with no less than 4 numbers. Lead guitarist on these tracks is the well-known producer Richie Podolor, who has worked with Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night, among others. One of the cornerstones of surf music was ‘Pipeline’, released in 1962 by The Chantays. Here the group is present with ‘Tragic Wind’, which contains all the ingredients of ‘Pipeline’, including the electric piano. As far as instrumental guitar numbers are concerned, the British The Shadows were no strangers. Here you get the version of one of their songs, namely ‘Driftin’’, by the Danish The Go-Getters. An odd one out, although a very tasty one, are The Nocturnes, who had a complete horn section. The formidable result of this can be heard in ‘Baha-Ree-Ba!’. The very first recording of ‘Dardanella’ goes back to 1919. It was also the first album to sell more than 3 million copies. In 1961 The Raiders recorded an extremely successful version of it. The musicians on this version are unknown, but it is quite possible that Leon Russell was behind the piano. More than formidable work on the six strings can be expected during ‘Rumble Bee’ by The New Dimensions. Dave Myers and The Surftones certainly sound different, due to the piano, in ‘King’s Surf’, although the band could not force a big breakthrough. The Crossfires, who are present here with ‘Inferno’, were able to force a breakthrough. When they changed their name, they scored several times. How then, you may ask? Well, they became The Turtles and who does not know ‘Happy Together’? Al Casey was a much sought-after session guitarist and played long before surf music came into being. You hear him twice, namely in ‘Surfin’ Blues Part 1’ and then in ‘Part 2’. Despite Al’s excellent guitar parts, it was not a hit and here you can definitely hear Leon Russell on keyboards. An obscure and extremely rare recording comes with ‘Thunderbeat’ by The Thundermen. It was their only 45 tour by the way. What a stunningly beautiful song! Jan & Dean may close with ‘Something A Little Bit Different’ and you can take that title literally, because in addition to a spoken intro by Jan Berry, the song also contains shouted interventions from the audience.
‘Surf Beat!’ is an album that gives you a summery good feeling. Whether or not sun and water can charm you, it doesn’t matter. What is certain is that the 33 tracks on this album will definitely get you in their grip.
