​Columbia en het onder diens vleugels opererende Epic Records hadden samen heel wat getalenteerde artiesten onder contract. De archieven van beide labels zijn dan ook bijna onuitputtelijk wat betreft de schitterende rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly die ze opnamen. Vreemd is het ook niet dat volume 49 in de ‘That’ll Flat… Git It!’ serie voor de vierde maal aandacht besteed aan deze platenmaatschappijen.
Niet verwonderlijk is tevens dat dit volume barst van de bekende namen. Zo tref je hier maar liefst twee tracks van Carl Perkins, namelijk ‘Pop, Let Me Have The Car’ en ‘Jive After Five’ aan. Wie ook tweemaal van zich laat horen is Johnny Horton. Hij is er met ‘Ole Slew-Foot’ en ‘I Don’t Like I Did’. Ander bekend volk komt er met o.a. The Collins Kids met het onuitgegeven ‘The Cuckoo Rock’, Rose Maddox met het knap rockende ‘Hey Little Dreamboat’, Ronnie Self en Link Wray. Link maakte furore met zijn heerlijke overstuurde gitaar in heel wat toffe instrumentals. Hier kruipt hij achter de microfoon voor het leuk van tempo wisselende ‘Mary Ann’. Gelukkig laat hij ook hier zijn gitaar niet in de koffer.
Het album start al dadelijk enorm veelbelovend met ‘Run’em Off van Billy Brown. Misschien niet dadelijk zo bekend, maar hij was het die het door Jim Reeves bekend gemaakte ‘He’ll Have To Go’ voor de allereerste keer opnam. Zo is er ook Bill Craddock met het razendknappe aanstekelijke ‘Lulu Lee’, inclusief een adembenemende saxsolo.
De bij Columbia onder contract staande artiesten mochten zelfs sporadisch buiten de lijntjes van hun vertrouwd genre kleuren. Zo konden een aantal artiesten die onder de ‘country’ noemer bekend waren, zich ook van hun rockabillyzijde laten horen.
Dat geldt zeker voor ‘Little’ Jimmy Dickens die country subliem met rockabilly mixt in ‘Salty Boogie’ en ‘Country Ways And City Ideas’ met een toffe fiddlesolo. Ook Billy Walker scoorde voor Columbia meermaals met countrysongs. Ook hij rockt hier countrygewijs op ‘Whirlpool’. Country is ook de ondertoon van Onie Wheeler’s ‘Onie’s Bop’. Iemand die ook die kans kreeg was Johnny Bond. Naast gitarist, songschrijver, auteur, radiofiguur, acteur in Western films was hij ook een niet onaardige zanger, zoals je hier hoort op ‘All I Can Do Is Cry’. Een vleugje country siert ook het van een heerlijke mondharmonica voorziene ‘I’m Lookin’ For A Musterd Patch’ van Jimmy Murphy.
Traditiegetrouw tref je hier ook een aantal eerder zeldzame, te ontdekken opnames aan. Sublieme rockabilly komt er ook van The Tunesmiths met ‘Oh Stop!’ en let ook op de prima steelgitaar en fiddle. Indrukwekkend is het op een bluesshuffle gemodelleerde ‘Who’s Been Here’ van Commonwealth Jones, met prima werk op de zes snaren. Verder sieren ook Charlie Adams met ‘Black Land Blues’, Lefty Frizzel’s jongere broer David Frizzell met ‘Tag Along’ en Jim Burgett met het tragere ‘The Living Dead’ deze compilatie.
Afsluiten doet volume 49 met Wally Hughes en de ‘trainsong’ ‘Bye Bye Baby (Movin’ Down The Line).
Bij dit album hoort ook nu weer een mooi uitgevoerd 34 pagina’s tellende booklet met alle info over de artiesten en de tracks.
Voor steengoede rockabilly en rock-‘n-roll wordt vaak enkel maar naar de opnames van Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios gekeken. Geef echter toe dat ze bij Columbia niet de duimen moest leggen voor Sun.

Columbia and Epic Records, which operated under its wings, had many talented artists under contract. The archives of both labels are therefore almost inexhaustible when it comes to the magnificent rock-‘n-roll and rockabilly that they recorded. It is therefore not surprising that volume 49 in the ‘That’ll Flat… Git It!’ series pays attention to these record companies for the fourth time.
It is also not surprising that this volume is bursting with well-known names. For example, you will find no less than two tracks by Carl Perkins here, namely ‘Pop, Let Me Have The Car’ and ‘Jive After Five’. Johnny Horton also makes himself heard twice. He is there with ‘Ole Slew-Foot’ and ‘I Don’t Like I Did’. Other well-known people come along with, among others, The Collins Kids with the unissued ‘The Cuckoo Rock’, Rose Maddox with the nicely rocking ‘Hey Little Dreamboat’, Ronnie Self and Link Wray. Link made a splash with his wonderfully distorted guitar in many cool instrumentals. Here he gets behind the microphone for the nicely tempo-changing 'Mary Ann'. Fortunately, he doesn't leave his guitar in the case here either.
The album starts off very promisingly with 'Run'em Off' by Billy Brown. Perhaps not so well-known at first, but he was the one who recorded the 'He'll Have To Go' made famous by Jim Reeves for the very first time. There is also Bill Craddock with the incredibly clever and catchy 'Lulu Lee', including a breathtaking sax solo.
The artists under contract with Columbia were even allowed to occasionally colour outside the lines of their familiar genre. In this way, a number of artists who were known under the 'country' label were also able to show their rockabilly side. This certainly applies to ‘Little’ Jimmy Dickens who sublimely mixes country with rockabilly in ‘Salty Boogie’ and ‘Country Ways And City Ideas’ with a cool fiddle solo. Billy Walker also scored several times for Columbia with country songs. He also rocks country-style here on ‘Whirlpool’. Country is also the undertone of Onie Wheeler’s ‘Onie’s Bop’. Someone who also got that chance was Johnny Bond. In addition to being a guitarist, songwriter, author, radio figure, actor in Western films, he was also a not bad singer, as you can hear here on ‘All I Can Do Is Cry’. A touch of country also adorns ‘I’m Lookin’ For A Musterd Patch’ by ​​Jimmy Murphy, provided with a wonderful harmonica.
Traditionally, you will also find a number of rather rare, discoverable recordings here. Sublime rockabilly also comes from The Tunesmiths with ‘Oh Stop!’ and also note the excellent steel guitar and fiddle. Impressive is the blues shuffle-modeled ‘Who’s Been Here’ by Commonwealth Jones, with excellent work on the six strings. Charlie Adams also graces this compilation with ‘Black Land Blues’, Lefty Frizzel’s younger brother David Frizzell with ‘Tag Along’ and Jim Burgett with the slower ‘The Living Dead’.
Volume 49 concludes with Wally Hughes and the train song ‘Bye Bye Baby (Movin’ Down The Line).
This album also comes with a beautifully produced 34-page booklet with all the information about the artists and the tracks.
For excellent rockabilly and rock-‘n-roll, people often only look at the recordings of Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios. But admit that they didn’t have to give in to Sun at Columbia.
