​De aandachtige lezer die de reviews van deze formidabele reeks volgt, zal zich bij de review van volume 49 zeker afgevraagd hebben waarom volume 48 geen review kreeg. Wel, het antwoord is gewoonweg dat volume 48 nu pas werd uitgebracht. Een pluspunt is zeker dat zowel volume 47 als het net verschenen volume 48, die beiden de opnames van Starday Records onder de loep nemen, nu mooi achter mekaar in de kast staan.
Pappy Daily en Jack Starns stichtten destijds Starday Records als een countrylabel. Half jaren ’50, toen rockabilly hoogtij vierde, volgde het Texaanse label ook deze nieuwe opwindende muzikale richting. Jack Starns had het bedrijf ondertussen reeds verlaten, maar met dezelfde gedrevenheid als het label de country omarmde, zo smeten ze zich ook rockabilly.
Net als op volume 47, staat ook volume 48 weer vol met wilde rockabilly. Een groot aantal van deze nummers werden opgenomen bij Gold Star Recording in Houston met een huisband, waarin Hal Harris meestal de leadgitarist was. Zoals we in het eerste deel rond Starday Records reeds zagen had het label een aantal ondertussen legendarische artiesten onder zijn vleugels, zoals Sonny Fisher, George Jones (hier nog vermeld als Thumper Jones), Rudy ‘Tutti’ Grayzell, Leon Payne (die zowel onder eigen naam als onder Rock Rogers opnam), Frankie Miller en natuurlijk Sleepy LaBeef (toen nog Sleepy LaBeff). Daarnaast bood Starday Records lokale jonge rockers de mogelijkheid om tegen een symbolisch bedrag, 300 exemplaren van hun opnames geperst te krijgen in de Starday Custom Series. Voorwaarde was wel dat ze hun eigen mastertapes aanleverden.
Genoeg achtergrondinfo rond het label. Laten we ons nu maar op dit volume focussen.
Opener is ‘Trucker From Tennessee’ van Link Davis. Alhoewel Link reeds de veertig gepasseerd was, zette hij als een jonge wilde rocker dit fantastisch nummer neer.
De blinde Leon Payne is tweemaal van de partij. Een eerste keer als Rock Rogers met ‘Little Rock Rock’. Rogers was ook niet meer van de jongsten, 39 was hij al toen hij dit nummer alsook het later op dit album te horen ‘Sweet Sweet Love’ onder eigen naam opnam.
George Jones of Thumper Jones was een countryartiest in hart en nieren. Pappy Daily wist hem echter te overhalen om een rockabillysong op te nemen. Met succes trouwens. Overtuig jezelf tijdens ‘Rock It’. 100 % country was Frankie Miller ook. Dat genre schemert dan ook door in het formidabele ‘True Blue’. George Jones had ook een neus voor talent. Zo loodste hij Benny Barnes binnen bij Starday. Terecht als je het eerder beschaafd rockende ‘You Gotta Pay’ hoort. Super nummer!
Mooie samenzang typeert dan weer ‘Pretending Is A Game’ van The Davis Twins, net zoals trouwens in ‘Hey Doll Baby’ van Ray and Lindy.
De eerder genoemde leadgitarist Hal Harris presteert subliem op ‘Don’t Be Gone Long’ van Bob Doss. Nummer dat ze trouwens ook samen schreven. Harris zelf hoor je met het door hemzelf geschreven ‘Jitterbop Baby’. Naast talent als gitarist kon hij ook vocaal erg goed mee.
Rocky Bill Ford is niet zo bekend. Jammer toch, want zijn ‘Mad Dog In Town’ dat ook wat countryinvloeden bevat, is een knaller van formaat. De steelgitaar geeft ook Truitt Forse’s ‘Chicken Bop’ een country kantje.
Klasbak Sonny Fisher tekent driemaal present met bekende tracks ‘Rockin’ Daddy’, ‘I Can’t Lose’ en ‘Pink And Black’. Bekend is ook Rudy ‘Tutti’ Grayzell, hier met het opwindende ‘Let’s Get Wild’. Sleepy LaBeffs stem is zo specifiek dat ze steeds weer karakter toevoegt aan zijn songs, zo ook op ‘All Alone’.
Midden jaren vijftig speelde Lou Walker een tijdje gitaar in The Texas Playboys van Bob Wills. Toffe door country gedraaide rockabilly laat hij horen op ‘Little Bitty Man’. Nummer dat hij ook schreef.
Uranium als brandstof voor de kernreactoren was zeer gegeerd in de vijftiger jaren. Dat inspireerde Rudy Gaddis tot het wel erg aparte ‘Uranium Fever’.
Naast de bekende artiesten sieren ook een aantal minder bekende en zelfs obscure artiesten dit volume. Feit is wel dat alle artiesten op gelijk niveau presteren. Kortom ook dit volume presenteert weer 34 wilde rockers. Mooie aanvulling op volume 47!  Traditiegetrouw krijg je in het mooi geïllustreerde 34 pagina’s tellende booklet, alle info over de artiesten en de tracks.

The attentive reader who follows the reviews of this formidable series will certainly have wondered when reviewing volume 49 why volume 48 did not get a review. Well, the answer is simply that volume 48 has only just been released. A plus is certainly that both volume 47 and the recently released volume 48, both of which examine the recordings of Starday Records, are now nicely placed behind each other.
Pappy Daily and Jack Starns founded Starday Records as a country label. In the mid-fifties, when rockabilly was at its peak, the Texan label also followed this new exciting musical direction. Jack Starns had already left the company in the meantime, but with the same drive as the label embraced country, they also threw themselves into rockabilly.
Just like volume 47, volume 48 is also full of wild rockabilly. A large number of these songs were recorded at Gold Star Recording in Houston with a house band, in which Hal Harris was usually the lead guitarist. As we saw in the first part about Starday Records, the label had a number of legendary artists under its wings, such as Sonny Fisher, George Jones (here still mentioned as Thumper Jones), Rudy ‘Tutti’ Grayzell, Leon Payne (who recorded both under his own name and under Rock Rogers), Frankie Miller and of course Sleepy LaBeef (then still Sleepy LaBeff). In addition, Starday Records offered local young rockers the opportunity to have 300 copies of their recordings pressed in the Starday Custom Series for a symbolic amount. The condition was that they supplied their own master tapes.
Enough background information about the label. Let’s now focus on this volume.
The opener is ‘Trucker From Tennessee’ by Link Davis. Although Link was already over forty, he played this fantastic number like a young wild rocker.
The blind Leon Payne is there twice. The first time as Rock Rogers with ‘Little Rock Rock’. Rogers was no longer young either, he was already 39 when he recorded this song as well as ‘Sweet Sweet Love’ under his own name, which can be heard later on this album.
George Jones or Thumper Jones was a country artist through and through. However, Pappy Daily managed to persuade him to record a rockabilly song. With success, by the way. Convince yourself during ‘Rock It’. Frankie Miller was also 100% country. That genre also shines through in the formidable ‘True Blue’. George Jones also had a nose for talent. For example, he guided Benny Barnes into Starday. Rightly so when you hear the rather civilized rocking ‘You Gotta Pay’. Great song!
Beautiful harmonies characterize ‘Pretending Is A Game’ by The Davis Twins, just like in ‘Hey Doll Baby’ by Ray and Lindy.
The previously mentioned lead guitarist Hal Harris performs sublimely on ‘Don’t Be Gone Long’ by Bob Doss. Number that they also wrote together. Harris himself can be heard with the self-written ‘Jitterbop Baby’. In addition to his talent as a guitarist, he was also very good vocally.
Rocky Bill Ford is not that well-known. Too bad, because his ‘Mad Dog In Town’, which also contains some country influences, is a real cracker. The steel guitar also gives Truitt Forse’s ‘Chicken Bop’ a country edge.
Classy Sonny Fisher is present three times with well-known tracks ‘Rockin’ Daddy’, ‘I Can’t Lose’ and ‘Pink And Black’. Rudy ‘Tutti’ Grayzell is also well-known, here with the exciting ‘Let’s Get Wild’. Sleepy LaBeff’s voice is so specific that it always adds character to his songs, as on ‘All Alone’.

Uranium as fuel for nuclear reactors was very popular in the fifties. That inspired Rudy Gaddis to write the very special ‘Uranium Fever’.
In addition to the well-known artists, a number of lesser-known and even obscure artists also grace this volume. The fact is that all artists perform at the same level. In short, this volume also presents 34 wild rockers. A nice addition to volume 47!
