​De releases in deze reeks maakten een sprong van volume 38 naar volume 40. Het label zal hier ongetwijfeld een aanvaardbare reden voor gehad hebben. Gelukkig verscheen nu het ontbrekende volume 39, zodat het plaatsje tussen de uitgaves 38 en 40 weer mooi opgevuld is. Volume 39 focust zich op een major label, namelijk United Artist Records. Het label ontstond midden jaren ’50 omdat de Hollywood film studio’s United Artists een platenlabel wou om de soundtracks van hun films op uit te brengen. Sinds 1957 nam het label ook rock-‘n-roll en rockabilly op. Voor vele artiesten in deze genres was United Artists Records een springplank naar andere labels. Vaak maakten zij maar één of twee singles om dan naar andere firma’s te verkassen. Zo begonnen Al Casey, George Jones en Delbert McClinton hun muzikale carrière bij het Hollywoods platenlabel. Al Casey horen we hier met de vrij unieke instrumental ‘The Stinger’. Countryster George Jones had heel wat in zijn mars. Hier zet hij een knap rockabillynummer neer met ‘Root Beer’. Delbert McClinton tekent present met zijn eerste band The Straitjackets. In ‘That Cat’ blaast hij tevens een aardig stukje op de bluesharp. Het nummer herbergt bovendien ook heel wat invloeden uit de rhythm & blues en soul. Lee Hazlewood en zijn toenmalige kompaan Lester Sill kropen in de late fifties regelmatig in de producersstoel voor de opnames van de rockers. Daardoor kregen sommige nummers ook een ietwat andere invulling. Zo kan je Joyce Davis’ ‘Superman’ net zo goed onder rhythm & blues catalogeren en bevat afsluiter ‘Sometime’ van Gene Thomas een dosis swamppop. Een ongebreidelde dosis energie stopt Chuck Wiley dan weer in ‘Shake Up The Dance’. Voor een tof sax driven gevoel kan je terecht bij het Zuiders aandoend instrumentale ‘Warm Up’ van The Tune Rockers. Ook een vermelding waard is zeker het bluesy ‘Right By My Side’ van Chuck Wiley die doet denken aan de early Elvis.
Het feit dat we hier te maken met een major label vertaalt zich ook in de knappe arrangementen en de aandacht en zorg die aan de opnames werd besteed.

​The releases in this series jumped from volume 38 to volume 40. The label sure have had an acceptable reason for this. Fortunately, the missing volume 39 has now appeared, so that the space between editions 38 and 40 has been nicely filled again. Volume 39 focuses on a major label, namely United Artist Records. The label was created in the mid-1950s because the Hollywood film studios United Artists wanted a record label to release the soundtracks of their films. Since 1957, the label has also recorded rock and roll and rockabilly. For many artists in these genres, United Artists Records was a springboard to other labels. Often they only made one or two singles and then moved to other companies.  Al Casey, George Jones and Delbert McClinton were a few who began their musical careers with the Hollywood record label.
This release links these well-known names to lesser-known artists, who are certainly equal. In addition to rock 'n' roll and rockabilly, some songs also contain a good dose of rhythm & blues, which makes the whole thing even more attractive. Volume 39 again contains a nice mix of vocal and instrumental songs. The fact that we're dealing with a major label here is also reflected in the clever arrangements and the attention and care that went into the recordings.
