​Elvis zou dit jaar 90 jaar geworden zijn. Dit inspireerde het Duitse Bear Family Records om het vierde volume in de serie ‘The Elvis Presley Connection’ op de markt te brengen. Het eerste volume in deze serie focuste op de jaren ’50, het tweede behandelde de late vijftiger jaren tot en met 1962 en het derde bevatte de periode 1963-1966. Het vierde volume zet de periode 1967-1969 in de spots. In de zestiger jaren concentreerde Elvis zich voornamelijk op zijn filmcarrière in Hollywood, om dan in 1968 met de grandioze ‘Comeback Special’ zijn podiumplaats, zoals in Las Vegas, opnieuw in te nemen. Ook dit volume bevat weer 28 indrukwekkende tracks. Zowel originele nummers die Elvis coverde, als covers van originele Elvis songs. Dat Presley een neus had voor steengoede nummers staat andermaal buiten kijf. Daarnaast was hij ook in de periode 1967-1969 enorm creatief en nam hij heel wat tijdloze hits op. Denk maar aan ‘Guitar Man’, ‘Big Boss Man’, ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’, ‘U.S. Male’, ‘In The Ghetto’ of ‘Suspicious Minds’, waarvan je hier alle originele versies krijgt. Een leuk weetje is het volgende. ‘Guitar Man’ krijg je hier in de originele versie van Jerry Reed, al inspireerde eerder Bob Lumans versie, Presley. Op de versie die Elvis opnam, speelde Jerry Reed dan weer leadgitaar. Dat deed hij trouwens ook op Presleys versie van Jimmy Reeds ‘Big Boss Man’. Die song krijg je hier ook in de snellere versie van Charlie Rich, duidelijk de versie die Elvis inspireerde. Jerry Reed was een grote inspiratiebron voor Presley, want ook ‘U.S. Male’ was van diens hand. Een klassieker binnen de rhythm & blues is Tommy Tuckers ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’. Naast Elvis coverden ook o.a. José Feliciano, Jerry Lee Lewis en Jeff Beck het nummer. In 1967 nam Elvis het schitterende ‘You Don’t Know Me’ op, nummer dat hier wordt vertolkt door Ray Charles. Elvis’ muzikale interesse was erg breed. Zo coverde hij ook ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, inmiddels het themalied van Liverpool’s Football Club, hier in de versie van crooner Andy Williams. Deze song krijg je ook nog eens van de formidabele Conway Twitty. Heerlijk klinkt ook de versie van ‘A Little Less Conversation’ door Mac Davis, die samen met Billy Strange het nummer schreef. Zoals geweten was Elvis een fan van gospel, zo ook van het nummer ‘Saved’, dat hij in een medley bracht in de ‘Comeback Special’. De originele versie van LaVern Baker siert deze compilatie. Vaak greep Presley liever terug naar songs die een grote indruk op hem maakte, dan gebruik te maken van de nieuwe nummers die men hem aanreikte. Zo zong hij  ‘Tiger Man (King Of The Jungle)’ vaak live in een medley met ‘Mystery Train’. ‘Tiger Man (King Of The Jungle’ krijg je in de originele van versie van Rufus Thomas die het in 1953 opnam in de Sun studio’s van Sam Phillips. Een streepje country ervaar je bij ‘Long Black Limousine’ door Vern Stovall. Het was Elvis’ eerste song die hij opnam in de American Sound Studio in Memphis in 1969. Bobby Bare’s versie, die je trouwens ook hier hoort, klinkt ‘country to the top’ en heeft meer connectie met Elvis’ versie. Met ‘From A Jack To A King’ scoorde Ned Miller wereldwijd. Elvis zong het nummer eerder met een gospelinslag, wat Miller deed besluiten dat Presleys versie beter was dan die van hemzelf. ‘In The Ghetto’ was één van de zovele monsterhits voor Elvis. Hier hoor je de versie van Mac Davis die ook co-writer was, al mag gezegd worden dat Elvis toch meer inlevingsvermogen aan het nummer toevoegde. ‘Suspicious Minds’ is een compositie van Mark James, die het nummer ook als single uitbracht. James’ producer Chips Moman en eigenaar van de eerder vernoemde American Sound Studio, bood de song aan Presley aan, nadat James’ single flopte. Niet verwonderlijk als je diens versie hoort. Het miste James duidelijk aan connectie met het nummer. Voor Presley zich aan de tweede take van Johnny Tillotsons ‘It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’’ wijdde, zong hij voor de grap ‘Only The Lonely’ van Roy Orbison. Op de vraag aan Elvis waarom hij geen Orbison nummer opnam, antwoordde hij dat Roys nummers niet beter konden gezongen worden.
Een rariteit op dit album is zeker de door Elvis geïnspireerde Vince Chu uit Singapore, met zijn versie van Carl Perkins’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes’.
In het 38 pagina’s tellende booklet, krijg je naast zeldzame foto’s en illustraties ook uitgebreide info betreffende de opgenomen tracks en de artiesten.
Inspireren liet de King zich door rhythm & blues, soul, country, rock-‘n-roll, gospel en pop en steeds wist hij dankzij zijn schitterende stem en inlevingsvermogen die nummers onsterfelijk te maken. Knap album!

Elvis would have turned 90 this year. This inspired the German Bear Family Records to release the fourth volume in the series ‘The Elvis Presley Connection’. The first volume in this series focused on the 1950s, the second covered the late 1950s up to and including 1962 and the third contained the period 1963-1966. The fourth volume puts the period 1967-1969 in the spotlight. In the 1960s, Elvis mainly concentrated on his film career in Hollywood, but he reclaims his place on stage in 1968 with the grandiose ‘Comeback Special’. This volume also contains 28 impressive tracks. Both original songs that Elvis covered, as well as covers of original Elvis songs. That Presley had a nose for great songs is beyond dispute. In addition, he was also extremely creative in the period 1967-1969 and recorded many timeless hits. Think of ‘Guitar Man’, ‘Big Boss Man’, ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’, ‘U.S. Male’, ‘In The Ghetto’ or ‘Suspicious Minds’, of which you get all the original versions here. A fun fact is the following. ‘Guitar Man’ is here in the original version by Jerry Reed, although Bob Luman’s version inspired Presley more. On the version that Elvis recorded, Jerry Reed played lead guitar. Incidentally, he also did that on Presley’s version of Jimmy Reed’s ‘Big Boss Man’. That song is also here in the faster version by Charlie Rich, clearly the version that inspired Elvis. Jerry Reed was a great source of inspiration for Presley, because ‘U.S. Male’ was also written by him. A classic within rhythm & blues is Tommy Tucker’s ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’. In addition to Elvis, José Feliciano, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jeff Beck also covered the song. In 1967 Elvis recorded the magnificent ‘You Don’t Know Me’, a song performed here by Ray Charles. Elvis’ musical interests were very broad. He also covered ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, now the theme song of Liverpool’s Football Club, here in the version of crooner Andy Williams. This song is also performed by the formidable Conway Twitty. The version of ‘A Little Less Conversation’ by Mac Davis, who wrote the song together with Billy Strange, also sounds wonderful. You experience a touch of country in ‘Long Black Limousine’ by Vern Stovall. It was Elvis’ first song that he recorded in the American Sound Studio in Memphis in 1969. Bobby Bare’s version, which you can also hear here, sounds ‘country to the top’ and has more connection with Elvis’ version. Ned Miller scored worldwide with ‘From A Jack To A King’. Elvis previously sang the song with a gospel slant, which made Miller decide that Presley’s version was better than his own. ‘In The Ghetto’ was one of the many monster hits for Elvis. Here you hear the version by Mac Davis who was also a co-writer, although it must be said that Elvis added more empathy to the song. ‘Suspicious Minds’ is a composition by Mark James, who also recorded the song as a single. James’ producer Chips Moman and also owner of the aforementioned American Sound Studio, offered the song to Presley after James’ single flopped. Not surprising when you hear his version. James clearly lacked a connection with the song. Before Presley made the second take of Johnny Tillotson’s ‘It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’’, he jokingly sang ‘Only The Lonely’ by Roy Orbison. When Elvis was asked why he didn’t record an Orbison song, he replied that Roy’s songs couldn’t be sung better.
A rarity on this album is certainly the Elvis-inspired Vince Chu from Singapore, with his version of Carl Perkins’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes’.

The King was inspired by rhythm & blues, soul, country, rock-‘n-roll, gospel and pop and he always managed to make those songs immortal thanks to his beautiful voice and empathy. Great album!
