​Geen idee waarom pianist Milan Robberechts en de vier andere leden van Warmoes voor snijbiet als albumtitel kozen, maar dat hun debuut ‘Binnenbuiten’ op het Trad Records-label verschijnt, zegt al meer over het soort muziek dat je erop kunt verwachten. Vlaamse folk, dus, uitstekend gespeeld door een groepje erg diverse muzikanten die er invloeden van jazz, pop en funk in weten te verwerken.
‘De Zandman’ begint met een wekker en klinkt lekker opgewekt – het soort muziek dat je tijdens de jaren tachtig vaak op de ochtendradio van de BRT(N) kon horen. ‘Klutskweit’ is een aanvankelijk op contrabas steunend jazzy nummer dat handig gebruik maakt van de muziekinstrumenten waar de bandleden in bedreven zijn, maar het iets dynamischere en matuurder klinkende ‘Nachtvorst’ – dat uitstekend opent met piano – laat voor het eerst een onuitwisbare indruk achter. Een knappe compositie met voldoende ruimte voor de piano, accordeon, blaasinstrumenten en contrabas die op de juiste momenten meer ingetogenheid opzoekt. Wie snel geïrriteerd geraakt door Boombalmuziek, zal hier wél terecht kunnen.
‘Orlando’ zoekt interessantere ritmeoorden op, maar klinkt tussendoor ook als een uitnodiging tot een exotische dans, waarna ‘Thee Deugd’ de vrolijke sfeer doorbreekt met een erg welgekomen en breekbaar pianostuk dat wat ons betreft een van de beste nummers van het album is geworden.
‘Fiets Jigs’ opent met (passende) geluidseffecten en belooft heel even een somberdere sfeer, maar gaat dan toch weer over in een overdaad aan speelsheid (en een knap blaasinstrumentstukje – Arno Molenschot beheerst zowel de tenorsax als de fluit), wat we eerlijk gezegd een beetje jammer vinden; er zijn tenslotte geen vocalen op het album terug te vinden en dan zou een bredere diversiteit aan thema’s wat ons betreft wel welkom zijn geweest – zo vinden we ‘Kune Kune’ toch een van de interessantste nummers op het album, puur vanwege de kleine tonale verschuiving. Net door die verandering in sfeer is het tragere, meer introspectieve ‘Galanthus’ de sterkste song op het album, wat wellicht ook te maken heeft met de (woordenloze) zang – jammer dat de band er zo lang mee wacht om toch eens vocalen toe te voegen, want dit werkt wel. Er komt ook weer zang naar voren op ‘Radiator Jig’, maar helaas zijn we ondertussen weer in de ‘happy people’-zone beland, waar heel wat ‘spirituele’ mensen die beladen thema’s niet aankunnen vanwege hun zogezegd inherente negatieve energie blij mee zullen zijn, maar wat voor ons toch een klein beetje een anticlimax vormt na het voormelde ‘Galanthus’.

No idea why pianist Milan Robberechts and the four other members of Warmoes chose Swiss chard as their album title, but the fact that their debut is being released on the Trad Records label already says quite a bit about the kind of music you can expect to find on it. Flemish folk, then, performed exceptionally well by a group of highly diverse musicians who successfully incorporate influences from jazz, pop, and funk.
'De Zandman' opens with an alarm clock and sounds pleasantly upbeat – the kind of music you could often hear on BRT(N) morning radio during the 1980s. 'Klutskweit' is a jazzy piece initially carried by the double bass and makes clever use of the instruments the band members excel at playing, but it is the slightly more dynamic and mature-sounding 'Nachtvorst' – which opens beautifully with piano – that leaves the first truly lasting impression. A fine composition that gives ample room to the piano, accordion, wind instruments, and double bass, while seeking greater restraint at exactly the right moments. Those who are quickly irritated by Boombal music will find something to appreciate here.
'Orlando' explores more interesting rhythmic territory, while at times also sounding like an invitation to an exotic dance, after which 'Thee Deugd' breaks the cheerful atmosphere with a highly welcome and fragile piano piece that, in our opinion, ranks among the finest tracks on the album.
'Fiets Jigs' opens with fitting sound effects and briefly promises a darker atmosphere, but soon returns to an abundance of playfulness (along with an excellent wind instrument passage – Arno Molenschot masters both the tenor saxophone and the flute), which we honestly find a little disappointing; after all, there are no vocals anywhere on the album, and in that case a broader diversity of themes would have been welcome. As a result, we consider 'Kune Kune' one of the album's most interesting tracks purely because of its subtle tonal shift. Precisely because of this change in mood, the slower and more introspective 'Galanthus' emerges as the strongest song on the album, which may also have something to do with the wordless vocals – it's a shame the band waits so long before introducing any vocal elements, because they work remarkably well here. Vocals also reappear on 'Radiator Jig', but unfortunately by then we have returned to the 'happy people' zone, which will undoubtedly appeal to many 'spiritual' listeners who struggle with heavier themes because of their supposedly inherent negative energy, but for us it nevertheless feels like a slight anticlimax after the aforementioned 'Galanthus'.
