​De naam Wee Willie Harris mag misschien niet dadelijk een belletje doen rinkelen, maar hij was ongetwijfeld de kleurrijkste figuur in het begin van de Britse rock-‘n-roll. Extravagant was hij zeker met zijn roze gekleurde haar en zijn opvallende kledij. Daarnaast zorgde zijn wilde en uitbundige podiumprestaties voor een frisse wind in de Britse muziekscene eind vijftiger jaren. Je zou zelfs kunnen zeggen dat hij een punker of glamrocker ‘avant la lettre’ was. De ‘Wild One From Bermondsey’, zoals hij genoemd werd, mag terecht het negende volume in de serie ‘The Brits Are Rocking’ opeisen. Enorm uitzonderlijk is het feit dat zijn lp ‘I Go Ape’, die begin jaren ’60 enkel in Israël werd uitgebracht, je hier volledig kan beluisteren. Het album is enorm moeilijk te vinden en daardoor een droom voor verzamelaars. Daarnaast krijgt je zijn belangrijkste studio-opnames uit de jaren ’50, waaronder ‘Rockin’ At The 2 I’s’, ‘Love Bug Crawl’, ‘Got A Match’ en ‘Wild One’. De rock-’n-roll mocht dan wel in Amerika ontstaan zijn, feit is dat gasten als Wee Willie Harris, door de compromisloze optredens de rock-‘n-rollvlam ook in Londen deden branden. Dat ze in eerste instantie daarvoor beroep deden op songs die in de USA hits waren, is niet meer dan logisch. Veel van deze songs, zijn dan ook in een succesvolle eigen Harris’ versie terug te vinden op dit album. Dat Wee Willie in staat was om zelf toffe nummers te schrijven, blijkt zeker uit ‘Rockin’ At The To I’s’ en ‘Grab You’. Dat laatste nummer moet Brian Setzer zeker geïnspireerd hebben voor zijn songs.
Harris beheerste ook de diverse rock-‘n-rollstijlen, gaande van de wild om zich heen slaande nummers tot de eerder ingetogen songs. De tracks die met publiek opgenomen zijn in The Railway Tavern in oktober 1957, alsook de tracks opgenomen bij TV shows, zijn hier het ultieme bewijs van. Het talent en vakmanschap van zijn band komt aan het licht in het instrumentale ‘Got A Match?’. Harris’ veelzijdigheid komt dan weer aan bod in het country rockende ‘Have A Drink On Me’.
David Bowie, Ian Dury en The Clash lieten doorschijnen dat Wee Willie Harris hen inspireerden. Dat bewijst meteen dat Harris, alhoewel hij niet de wereldbekendheid kreeg die hij ongetwijfeld verdiende, van onschatbare waarde was voor de ontwikkeling van de Britse rock-‘n-roll.
In het 36 pagina’s tellende boekje, rijkelijk geïllustreerd met talrijke foto’s en illustraties vertelt Roland Heinrich Rumtreiber het indrukwekkende verhaal van de unieke, extravagante Wee Willie Harris, vanaf zijn beginjaren in de legendarische 2 I’s Coffee Bar in Soho, zijn tournees met Buddy Holly en Gene Vincent tot zijn status als ‘Godfather Of Punk’.
Fans van wilde, energieke Britse rock-‘n-roll zullen van dit eerbetoon aan Wee Willie Harris zeker smullen. Bovendien heb je meteen het moeilijk te vinden ‘I Go Ape’ album in een schitterende geluidskwaliteit en voor de eerste maal op cd, in je bezit. Een aanrader!

The name Wee Willie Harris may not immediately ring a bell, but he was undoubtedly the most colorful figure in the early days of British rock 'n' roll. He was certainly extravagant, with his pink hair and striking clothes. Moreover, his wild and exuberant stage performances brought a breath of fresh air to the British music scene of the late 1950s. You could even say he was a punk or glam rocker avant la lettre. The ‘Wild One From Bermondsey’, as he was known, rightfully claims the ninth volume in the ‘The Brits Are Rocking’ series. It's incredibly that his rare LP ‘I Go Ape’, released exclusively in Israel in the early 1960s, can be heard in its entirety here. The album is incredibly hard to find, making it a collector's dream. You'll also get his most important studio recordings from the 1950s, including ‘Rockin' At The 2 I's’, ‘Love Bug Crawl’, ‘Got A Match’, and ‘Wild One’. While rock 'n' roll may have originated in America, it's a fact that guys like Wee Willie Harris, with their uncompromising performances, also ignited the rock 'n' roll flame in London. It's logical that they initially relied on songs that were hits in the US. Many of these songs, therefore, appear on this album in Harris's own successful version. Wee Willie's ability to write great songs is certainly evident in ‘Rockin' At The 2 I's’ and ‘Grab You’. The latter must have inspired Brian Setzer.
Harris also mastered various rock 'n' roll styles, ranging from wildly raging numbers to more subdued ones. The tracks recorded with an audience at The Railway Tavern in October 1957, as well as those recorded for TV shows, are the ultimate proof of this. His band's talent and craftsmanship are revealed in the instrumental ‘Got A Match?’. Harris's versatility is also showcased in the country-rocking ‘Have A Drink On Me’.
David Bowie, Ian Dury, and The Clash all hinted that Wee Willie Harris inspired them. This immediately proves that Harris, although he didn't achieve the worldwide fame he undoubtedly deserved, was invaluable to the development of British rock 'n' roll.
