Acoustic Sounds Opens Its Blues Vault with Two Unreleased “Blues Masters” Performances

Acoustic Sounds is officially cracking open its Blues Masters at the Crossroads archive, beginning with two previously unheard performances from Tab Benoit and Tony Joe White. The new archival series, Blues Masters Live, launches October 2, spotlighting sets recorded at the company’s famed Blue Heaven Studios in 2002 and 2003.

For two decades, Blues Masters at the Crossroads brought generations of blues artists to Salina, Kansas, where they performed inside a former Gothic‑style church transformed into one of the most respected analog recording spaces in the country. Unlike typical live albums, these shows were captured direct‑to two‑track, half‑inch tape at 15 ips, preserving the room’s natural acoustics and the raw immediacy of each performance. Those original tapes now form the backbone of the series’ first releases.

Tab Benoit: Louisiana Roots on Full DisplayRecorded October 19, 2002, Tab Benoit’s set finds the then‑34‑year‑old guitarist deepening the Louisiana blend that would define his career—blues, swamp grooves, New Orleans R&B, Cajun rhythms. Joined by bassist Carl Dufrene Jr. and drummer Darryl White, Benoit moves through originals like “Muddy Bottom Blues,” “Nice and Warm,” “Let Love Take Control,” and “Louisiana Style,” while weaving in material tied closely to his home state.

Covers of Professor Longhair’s “Her Mind Is Gone” and Boozoo Chavis’ “Dog Hill” sit naturally beside Benoit’s own songs, and Camille Bob (Lil’ Bob) steps in for a spirited take on “I Got Loaded.” A lively “Mardi Gras Medley” pushes the set toward a rousing finish with “Cherry Tree Blues” and “Bayou Boogie.”

Tony Joe White: Pure, Unfiltered Swamp SoulA year later, on October 18, 2003, Tony Joe White arrived at Blue Heaven Studios with drummer Marc “Boom Boom” Cohen. The resulting performance—long held as a personal favorite by Acoustic Sounds founder Chad Kassem—is stark, spacious, and unmistakably White.

With only his voice, electric guitar, harmonica, and a slow‑burn rhythmic pulse, White moves through a set drawn entirely from his own catalog: “Rich Woman Blues,” “Willie and Laura Mae Jones,” “Undercover Agent for the Blues,” “Tunica Motel,” “Steamy Windows,” and, of course, “Polk Salad Annie.”

The room itself becomes part of the music. Originally built as a church before the era of amplification, Blue Heaven’s natural resonance is captured beautifully by engineers David Baker and Katsuhiko Naito, giving the performance its distinctive sonic character.

Kassem has kept the recording close for more than twenty years, often using it to demonstrate the studio’s analog chain. Its release finally brings the full performance to listeners beyond that small circle.

Back to the Tapes: Vinyl Releases and What Comes NextBoth albums were mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180‑gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings.
  • Tab Benoit’s set arrives as a two‑LP 33⅓ RPM release.
  • Tony Joe White’s concert appears on a single‑LP 33⅓ RPM edition. Both titles will be issued through APO Records.

The bigger story may be the future. With Blues Masters at the Crossroads spanning twenty years, Acoustic Sounds holds a deep archive of performances. If these first two releases mark the beginning of a broader series rather than a one‑off, Blues Masters Live could become a major ongoing document of a remarkable era in modern blues.
